Chapter 10 - chapter 10: The Woman Who Should Have Been His Wife

Serena learned very quickly that marrying Adrian Kingston did not just mean living in his house.

It meant entering his war.

The next morning she came downstairs dressed simply but elegantly in one of the outfits Margaret had prepared.

She still felt like she was wearing someone else's life.

Adrian was already seated at the breakfast table reading financial reports like the marriage yesterday had been just another task completed.

"Good morning," she said.

He looked up briefly.

"Good morning."

His eyes paused slightly.

Noticing.

Evaluating.

"You're adjusting faster than expected."

Serena sat down calmly.

"Survival requires fast learning."

That answer pleased him.

"You'll need that skill."

Before she could ask why, Margaret approached carefully.

"Sir… Miss Victoria Hale is here."

The air changed instantly.

Adrian's expression became unreadable.

Serena noticed.

"Who is Victoria Hale?"

Adrian answered simply:

"Someone my family expected me to marry."

Of course.

Serena felt a strange tightness in her chest she didn't like.

"Should I leave?"

His answer was immediate:

"No."

That surprised her.

"You're my wife. You stay."

The words were simple.

But the way he said them carried weight.

Victoria Hale entered like she owned the room.

Tall.

Beautiful.

Perfectly dressed.

Confidence of someone born into wealth.

Her smile disappeared the moment she saw Serena.

"So it's true."

Her voice was sharp elegance.

"You really married… her."

Serena remained calm.

"Good morning."

Victoria didn't respond.

Her eyes moved over Serena like she was inspecting a product.

"Interesting choice."

Adrian's voice became colder:

"Say what you came to say."

Victoria ignored him.

Still focused on Serena.

"Do you know who I am?"

Serena answered simply:

"No."

Victoria looked almost offended.

"Victoria Hale. Our families have worked together for 30 years."

Then:

"I was supposed to be Mrs. Kingston."

Serena nodded slightly.

"But you aren't."

Silence.

Margaret almost stopped breathing.

Victoria's smile became dangerous.

"Do you know what people are saying about you?"

Serena answered calmly:

"Probably nothing kind."

Victoria stepped closer.

"They're saying you're a gold digger."

Serena didn't react.

"They're saying you trapped him."

Still nothing.

Victoria leaned slightly closer:

"They're saying you won't last three months."

Serena finally spoke:

"People also said I wouldn't survive my past."

Victoria frowned.

That wasn't submission.

That was quiet strength.

"Do you even belong here?"

Serena answered:

"Legally… yes."

Adrian almost smiled at that answer.

Victoria turned to him.

"Adrian, this is ridiculous. End this before it becomes embarrassing."

His answer came like ice:

"My marriage is not a negotiation."

"This affects business!"

"So does my authority."

Victoria's voice sharpened:

"She will ruin your image."

Adrian answered calmly:

"My image is not that fragile."

Then Serena spoke unexpectedly:

"Miss Hale."

Victoria turned slowly.

Serena continued calmly:

"You seem more upset about losing a position than losing a person."

That hit harder than intended.

Victoria's eyes hardened.

"You think you won something?"

Serena answered honestly:

"No."

"Then what do you think this is?"

Serena's answer surprised even Adrian:

"Temporary."

Silence.

Victoria blinked.

"Temporary?"

"Yes."

Serena took a sip of her tea.

"Which means I'm not your real problem."

Victoria frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Serena answered quietly:

"If he didn't choose you before me… he wouldn't choose you after me."

Complete silence.

That was the first real slap.

Adrian slowly leaned back in his chair.

Watching her.

Victoria's composure cracked slightly.

"You are very bold for someone with nothing."

Serena replied:

"I had nothing long before I came here. That's why I'm not afraid of losing it."

That ended it.

Victoria looked at Adrian one last time.

"You'll regret this."

Adrian's answer:

"I rarely do."

She left.

But not defeated.

Just delayed.

War announced.

After she left, Serena exhaled slowly.

"Did I just create an enemy?"

Adrian answered:

"Yes."

"Is she dangerous?"

"Yes."

"Great," Serena sighed softly.

For a moment… Adrian actually smiled slightly.

"You handled that well."

Serena looked at him.

"Was I supposed to apologize?"

"Most would."

"I'm not most."

"No," he agreed quietly. "You aren't."

A small silence passed.

Then Serena asked:

"Was she important to you?"

Adrian answered without hesitation:

"No."

"Not even a little?"

"She was logical. Not important."

Serena nodded slowly.

"That's a very cold way to choose people."

His answer was quiet:

"It kept me safe."

She didn't respond.

But for the first time…

She wondered what it would take to make a man like him feel something real.

And Adrian wondered something more dangerous:

Why her opinion suddenly mattered.
