Chapter 10 - The Buy-In

The boardroom was too quiet.

Jessica sat at the head of the oval table, surrounded by stone-faced board members who avoided her gaze. The envelope from the anonymous investor still sat unopened beside her.

She hadn't told anyone what it said.

Not yet.

The line kept echoing in her head:

"How does it feel to lose everything in silence?"

She swallowed hard.

Someone was taunting her—and they were winning.

"Let's begin," said Alan Cross, the senior board advisor. His tone was clipped, formal. "We've been called here due to a major stake acquisition. Twenty-five percent of Benson Group has been bought out in under forty-eight hours."

Jessica tried to steady her voice. "Do we know who the buyer is?"

Alan gave her a long look. "The buyer wishes to remain silent. For now."

A younger board member leaned forward. "That's a quarter of the company. If they decide to push a vote of no confidence, we could lose control."

Jessica's heart skipped. "They won't."

The doors opened.

A lawyer stepped in and handed a folder to Alan. "Instructions from the investor. Strategic recommendations."

Jessica couldn't take it anymore. "Who the hell is it? Who's playing games with me?"

Alan didn't flinch. "They've requested we refer to them only as 'Quantum Holdings.'"

Tasha Reid sat in the far corner, silent. She caught Jessica's eye briefly, and for a split second… Jessica felt it.

A familiar chill.

No. It couldn't be.

He was gone.

Adrian wouldn't do this to her.

Would he?

Across the city, Adrian walked into an identity scrubbing facility—a sleek private lab hidden inside an office that looked abandoned from the street.

A security scanner beeped as he entered.

System Activated: Identity Erasure Protocol

The AI voice echoed softly in his mind.

Once this process begins, all records of "Adrian Cole" will vanish from government, banking, and corporate systems. Are you ready?

He stared at the screen.

Photos of his past life flickered in front of him—his birth certificate, school IDs, even wedding photos with Jessica.

Gone.

He pressed his thumb against the scanner.

"Yes."

Confirmed. Deletion in Progress…

One by one, the files burned away.

His past. His pain. His name.

New Identity: Cole A. Quantum

Legal Status: Global investor with Level-5 clearance

Digital Ghost Protocol: Activated

Back in the boardroom, Jessica was unraveling.

"You're saying this Quantum Holdings is now our largest private stakeholder? And we don't even know who they are?"

Tasha finally spoke, her voice calm and clipped. "Anonymous investing is legal, Jessica. Especially when facilitated through multi-layer shells."

Jessica turned toward her. "You seem very… comfortable with this."

"I'm comfortable with structure," Tasha replied. "You've been running this company on sentiment. That's not leadership. That's survival."

The room stiffened.

Jessica's cheeks flushed. "You think I wanted this? That I asked for—"

"No," Tasha interrupted. "But someone's clearly forcing you to evolve."

The silence that followed was colder than any slap.

Adrian watched the boardroom feed from a private suite. The system had granted him remote surveillance access for strategic purposes.

Jessica looked tired.

Not weak.

Just… hollowed out.

Jessica Benson – Regret Levels Approaching Threshold

Decision Point Imminent: Restore or Ruin

He leaned back, fingers steepled.

Not yet.

This wasn't about revenge.

It was about becoming untouchable.

Jessica stepped out of the boardroom just past 4 p.m., hands shaking as she pulled off her heels and sat on the nearest bench in the hallway.

Her assistant ran over with the latest report. "Ma'am… you might want to sit down for this."

"I'm already sitting."

"The buyer now controls 27% after this morning's moves. We're being boxed in."

Jessica felt her throat tighten. "Boxed in by a ghost."

That night, Michael showed up drunk outside her building.

Jessica stood in the lobby, arms crossed, watching him bang on the glass.

"I just wanna talk!" he slurred.

She didn't move.

"Jessica, please!"

Security held him back.

He looked desperate, greasy—nothing like the man she thought she loved.

She turned away without a word.

As she stepped into the elevator, she felt it again—that chill.

Someone was watching.

Not Michael.

Someone else.

The next morning, Adrian's phone buzzed.

System Mission Complete: Digital Rebirth

Reward: Level-Up Access – Shadow Board Control

You may now dictate direction of Benson Group anonymously

Tasha entered his suite with a tablet. "They're on edge. Jessica's barely holding the board together."

Adrian looked up. "Send the first recommendation."

She blinked. "Which one?"

He turned the screen toward her.

"Fire Michael Kane from all consultancy roles. No negotiation."

Tasha smiled. "That'll shake her."

"It'll clear the rot," Adrian corrected. "She won't fight it. She already knows."

At Benson Group headquarters, Jessica stared at the memo in disbelief.

A one-line directive from Quantum Holdings:

Michael Kane is to be removed with immediate effect.

She picked up her phone. Michael didn't answer.

Of course he didn't.

She stared out the window, lips trembling.

If this investor knew enough to force Michael out… then they knew everything.

Her betrayal. Her lies. Her weakness.

"Adrian…" she whispered.

This was no longer coincidence.

It was precision.

That evening, Adrian stood alone in the shadows outside the hospital.

Through the window, he watched Jessica sit beside her father's bed.

She looked smaller than he remembered.

But stronger, too.

Still holding on.

Still fighting.

The system pinged quietly:

Optional Mission: Speak to Her Tonight – Reveal Your Return

Reward: Emotional Clarity + Closure Sequence

He didn't move.

Not yet.

Let the silence speak first.

Let her feel it.

Jessica returned home to find a single black envelope under her door.

Inside, a USB stick.

She plugged it in with trembling hands.

It was a video.

Grainy. Silent. From the hotel room months ago. The one where she'd cheated.

But this time, there was a timestamp.

And something else.

A reflection in the window.

Adrian.

He'd seen it all.

And left without a word.

Her knees buckled as she sank to the floor, hand over her mouth.

Tears streaming.

"He was there…"
