Chapter 7 - The Sect Leader’s Decision

The highest hall of Azure River Sect was not built for discussion.

It was built for finality.

A circular chamber carved into black stone sat beneath the central peak of the sect. At its center hovered a slow-rotating formation core, feeding the room with steady spiritual pressure that kept every thought slightly heavier than normal.

Time felt slower here.

More deliberate.

Four figures stood within the chamber.

The Sect Leader sat above them on a raised stone seat, eyes half-lidded as if he had been listening long before anyone arrived.

Below him stood the hall master, Elder Shen, and two senior adjudication elders.

No one spoke immediately.

Because the message that brought them here did not require repetition.

Finally, the Sect Leader spoke.

"An outer disciple."

His voice carried no disbelief. Only confirmation.

Elder Shen nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Li Feng."

The Sect Leader repeated the name once, as if testing its weight.

Then he asked, "Confirm the reports."

The hall master stepped forward.

"Three enforcement disciples. Cultivation removed. One Inner Sect Hunter deployed. Partial structural destabilization of Qi confirmed. Hunter retreated and reported anomaly classification."

The Sect Leader listened without expression.

When the hall master finished, silence returned.

The Sect Leader leaned slightly forward.

"Removed," he said. "Not killed."

"Yes," Elder Shen replied.

Another pause.

Then the Sect Leader asked a quieter question.

"What happens to a cultivator whose cultivation is removed?"

One elder answered immediately.

"They become mortals."

The Sect Leader nodded slowly.

"And what happens when that removal can be applied repeatedly?"

No one answered.

Because the implication did not require clarification.

The formation core above them rotated slightly faster for a moment, reacting to the rising tension.

The Sect Leader closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them again, his tone had changed.

"Has he attempted escape?"

"No," the hall master said.

A faint shift in expression.

"Still within outer sect grounds."

That detail changed the room's atmosphere slightly.

Contained.

For now.

The Sect Leader tapped his finger once against the armrest.

"Bring him before me."

A sharp silence followed.

One of the adjudication elders spoke carefully.

"Sect Leader… live capture or suppression?"

The Sect Leader looked at him.

"That depends on what he is."

Another pause.

Then he added:

"If he is a cultivator, he can be judged."

His gaze darkened slightly.

"If he is not… then judgment may not apply."

The room went still again.

Elder Shen spoke quietly.

"Should we inform external authority channels?"

The Sect Leader did not answer immediately.

His gaze drifted toward the rotating formation core.

"No."

The word was simple.

Final.

He continued.

"Not yet."

A slight pause.

"First, we confirm what we are dealing with."

The hall master bowed slightly.

"Understood."

The Sect Leader rose from his seat.

That motion alone increased the pressure in the room, as if the formation core reacted to his presence.

"All enforcement actions are suspended unless escalation is required."

A pause.

"If he resists capture…"

He stopped speaking for a moment.

Then finished:

"Then we adjust accordingly."

No one questioned what that meant.

Because everyone understood that "adjust accordingly" inside Azure River Sect had more than one interpretation.

The Sect Leader turned slightly.

"This meeting is concluded."

The elders bowed.

One by one, they left the chamber.

Elder Shen was the last to exit.

Before leaving, he paused briefly.

"…Sect Leader."

"Yes?"

"If this anomaly is what the reports suggest…"

He did not finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

The Sect Leader gave a small nod.

"I understand."

Elder Shen left.

The doors closed.

And the chamber fell into silence again, broken only by the slow rotation of the formation core.

The Sect Leader remained standing for a long moment.

Then he spoke softly to himself.

"Outer disciple…"

A faint pressure spread outward.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Calculation.

"…We will see what you are."
