Chapter 23 - Chapter 22 - Internal Doubts

Adrian's knuckles were raw again. Not from a fight, but from the wall. The paint peeled under his hand as he leaned there, forehead pressed to cool concrete, breath jagged. The others were in the next room, voices low and clipped. He knew they were talking about him.

"Tell me you heard it too," Amara was saying. "The way Fallon framed it, Adrian wasn't just a hostage. He was part of her design. She's still in his head."

"Don't," Toni answered, sharp as broken glass. "Don't reduce him to a pawn. He's standing two meters away. If you want to pick him apart, do it to his face."

Adrian let the words bleed through the wall, eyes closing. The cruel part was that Amara wasn't wrong. Fallon's taunts still rattled in his bones. You think you've won, but the world doesn't need you to succeed. The line replayed like a virus in his nervous system.

He pushed off the wall, walked into the room without looking at either of them. The table was littered with maps, data chips, scrawled notes. The rebellion's war-room. But the silence between them was thicker than the smoke from Amara's abandoned coffee.

"Say it," Adrian said, voice low. "Say what you were already whispering."

Amara's eyes softened, then sharpened. "Fine. I think Fallon broke more than your body when she took you. I think she built… a ghost inside you. And if we're not careful, we'll all pay for it."

The words landed like steel. Toni bristled, arms crossed. "He doesn't need this right now."

"He doesn't need lies either," Amara shot back.

Adrian exhaled a shaky laugh. "You're both wrong." He picked up one of the maps, stared at the red circles marking Providence outposts. "She didn't leave a ghost. She left a mirror. Every time I think, every time I strategize, I see her face. Not because she owns me. Because I can't unlearn what she taught me."

Toni's jaw clenched, but she said nothing.

It was Mrs. Nwando who broke the tension when she entered, carrying a box of old files. She glanced at Adrian's hands, at the blood seeping from cracked skin, and said quietly, "You're all too young to be this scarred. And yet here we are."

Her words weren't comfort. They were history, spoken aloud.

---

Later, when the safehouse finally quieted, Amara found Adrian on the roof. The city spread below them, neon bleeding into night. He was sitting on the ledge, cigarette unlit between his fingers.

"You don't even smoke," she said.

He turned the stick between his hands. "I don't. Just like pretending I could."

Amara sat beside him, legs dangling. "You scared me, back there."

"You mean when I didn't deny it?"

"When you sounded like her." Her voice broke slightly. "Like Fallon. Detached. Cold."

Adrian chuckled, bitter. "Maybe that's what survival costs."

Amara's hand tightened on her knee. "No. You're not her echo, Adrian. You're… you. Even if she taught you how to sharpen your edges, you're the one who decides where to cut."

He looked at her, really looked. Her defiance was fire, but her eyes carried exhaustion she never admitted. "And you? You still believe truth fixes everything? Even when half the world would rather be lied to?"

Her silence stretched. For once, Amara had no speech, no slogan.

"Exactly," Adrian muttered. "That's why Toni hates your approach. She sees the holes. She sees the backlash."

Amara turned on him. "And what about you? You sit in the middle, bleeding doubt. Which way do you lean, Adrian? Her ice or my fire?"

He didn't answer. Because truthfully, he didn't know.

---

Inside, Toni was bent over a screen, fingers moving with surgical precision. Kiru hovered nearby, chewing her lip.

"You're not telling them everything," Kiru said finally.

Toni didn't look up. "Neither are you."

The younger girl flinched, then crossed her arms. "That's not the point. Adrian deserves to know the kind of code Fallon left behind. If she buried triggers in his mind...."

"Don't," Toni snapped. "He's not a machine you can debug."

"But he was programmed," Kiru pressed, voice trembling. "So was I. Y'all know that Fallon doesn't just break people, she tries to rewire them. You of all people should understand why I'm afraid."

Toni's hands stilled. For a moment, her mask cracked, shadows flickering across her face. "Fear is not an excuse to tear him apart. If you want to stay, you'll learn that."

Kiru bit her tongue but didn't back down.

---

By morning, the cracks widened. Dare had arrived, fresh from another political errand, suit wrinkled, eyes bloodshot. He pulled Adrian aside before anyone else stirred.

"You're unraveling," Dare whispered. "I see it in your eyes. You think they trust you, but Amara doubts, Toni calculates, and the rest… they'll turn on you if you slip. Don't make me pick sides against my own brother."

Adrian froze. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying, don't let Fallon win by making you her reflection. If you start to sound like her, if you start to be her...." Dare shook his head. "They'll kill you before they kill her."

Adrian swallowed hard, chest burning. His own brother's warning felt like prophecy.

---

That night, the Rebellion sat around the table again. Plans sprawled before them, but no one touched them.

"We need to decide," Amara said firmly. "How much longer can we keep reacting? Fallon's web stretches across three continents. If we wait, she'll roll out Phase One before we blink."

"Then we don't wait," Adrian said flatly. "We cut her at the core."

Toni's eyes flicked to him, wary. "You're proposing infiltration."

"Yes." His voice didn't shake this time. "Not half-measures. Not sabotage. We go in. Straight to her base."

Kiru's face paled. "That's suicide."

"Maybe," Adrian admitted. "But it's the only way to end this."

Silence hung like a blade.

Amara finally said, "And if she still has you on strings? If this is exactly what she wants?"

Adrian met her gaze. His hands still bled, but his voice was steady. "Then I'll cut them myself. Before she does."

No one spoke. Because they all knew, the war outside was nothing compared to the war inside each of them.

And the clock was already ticking.
