Chapter 15 - Chapter 14: The Weight of Watching

The palace did not sleep.

It only pretended to.

Even in the deepest hour of night—when torches burned low and footsteps faded—the walls still listened. The wind still carried whispers. And somewhere… unseen eyes remained open.

The prince had begun to notice it.

Not directly.

Not clearly.

But enough to feel it.

---

The courtyard was empty when he stepped into it.

Moonlight painted the marble in pale silver, softening its sharp edges. The training grounds—once filled with noise, clashing steel, and shouting instructors—now stood quiet.

Too quiet.

He walked slowly, barefoot.

Not as a prince.

But as a thinker.

Every step echoed just enough to remind him… he was not alone.

---

"You feel it now."

The voice came without sound.

The beggar sat atop the stone railing, legs dangling like he belonged there more than the palace itself.

No guards.

No warning.

Just presence.

---

The prince didn't turn immediately.

"I don't feel anything," he said calmly.

The beggar smiled.

"That's the problem."

---

Silence stretched.

Heavy.

Deliberate.

---

"Tell me," the beggar continued, "when you walk through your father's court… what do you see?"

The prince answered without hesitation.

"Power. Structure. Order."

The beggar tilted his head.

"And behind it?"

The prince paused.

For the first time… truly paused.

"…fear."

---

The beggar nodded.

"Good. You're learning to look beyond what is shown."

He jumped down lightly, landing without a sound.

"But you're still blind."

---

The prince turned now.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Curious.

"Then teach me to see."

---

The beggar stepped closer.

Closer than anyone ever dared.

"Seeing is dangerous."

A whisper.

"Because once you do… you cannot unsee."

---

A breeze passed between them.

Cold.

Carrying something unseen.

---

"You think you are being trained," the beggar said softly.

"Sword. Strategy. Control."

He shook his head.

"You are being measured."

---

The prince's eyes narrowed slightly.

"By whom?"

---

The beggar laughed.

Not loudly.

Not mockingly.

But… knowingly.

"Everyone."

---

He began to walk in slow circles around the prince.

"The kings watch each other."

"The ministers watch the kings."

"The servants watch the ministers."

"And the shadows…"

He stopped.

"…watch all of them."

---

The prince felt it again.

That subtle shift.

That presence without form.

---

"You think your lessons began when your tutors arrived," the beggar continued.

"They didn't."

"They began the moment you were born."

---

The prince's voice lowered.

"…and what have they seen?"

---

The beggar met his gaze.

"Something… incomplete."

---

That word lingered.

Incomplete.

Not weak.

Not flawed.

But… unfinished.

---

"Good," the prince said quietly.

"Then I still have room to become something greater."

---

The beggar smiled wider this time.

"There it is."

---

He stepped back, creating distance again.

"You seek greatness."

A pause.

"But do you understand what it costs?"

---

The prince didn't answer immediately.

Because this time… he didn't know.

---

The beggar continued anyway.

"Greatness is not given to those who want it."

"It is given to those who can survive it."

---

The wind grew stronger.

Torches flickered.

Shadows stretched unnaturally long.

---

"You want to rule?" the beggar asked.

"Then understand this—"

His voice sharpened.

"For every step above others… you lose something below."

---

"Like what?" the prince asked.

---

The beggar's eyes softened.

"Yourself."

---

Silence.

Deep.

Unavoidable.

---

The prince looked down at his hands.

Small.

Young.

But already carrying weight beyond their size.

---

"Then what is the point?" he asked.

"If ruling means losing yourself… what remains?"

---

The beggar stepped closer one final time.

And for the first time—

His voice held no riddles.

No masks.

Only truth.

---

"Control."

---

The word felt heavier than any weapon.

---

"Not over others," the beggar continued.

"But over what you are willing to become."

---

The prince looked up.

And in that moment—

Something changed.

Not visibly.

Not dramatically.

But fundamentally.

---

"I understand," he said.

---

The beggar studied him carefully.

Longer than before.

Deeper than before.

---

"No," he whispered.

"You don't."

A faint smile.

"But you will."

---

He turned.

And began to walk away.

---

"Wait," the prince called.

---

The beggar stopped—but didn't turn.

---

"…who are you?" the prince asked.

---

A long silence followed.

Longer than any before.

---

Then—

A single answer.

---

"No one…"

A step forward.

"…important."

---

And just like that—

He was gone.

---

The courtyard returned to stillness.

But it was no longer the same.

---

High above—

Hidden within carved stone and silent towers—

Eyes remained open.

Watching.

Measuring.

Waiting.

---

And for the first time—

The prince did not ignore them.

---

He looked up.

Directly.

Unafraid.

---

"Watch me," he whispered.

---

Because now—

He understood something far more dangerous than power.

---

He was not the only one preparing.
