Volume 1: Awakening of a Fractured Core
The battlefield had already turned chaotic.
The creatures—those distorted, unstable beings—kept emerging from the fractured terrain like shadows given form.
They weren't alive.
But they weren't dead either.
They flickered.
Like broken signals struggling to exist.
"Watch your left!" Zeph shouted.
Aren turned just in time.
A creature lunged toward him—its body glitching between forms, limbs stretching unnaturally as it closed the distance.
He moved instinctively.
A step forward.
A twist.
His hand surged with unstable Aether.
Impact.
The creature shattered—
But not like before.
This time, it resisted.
For a fraction of a second.
And that was enough.
"…They're getting stronger," Lyra said sharply as she froze another approaching entity mid-motion. Ice spread rapidly across its body—but cracks formed instantly.
"They're adapting," Noctis added, appearing behind one and striking its core point. It dissolved, but slower than before.
Kaien grinned wildly, flames erupting around him in a violent surge.
"Good."
He charged straight into a cluster of them.
Explosions followed.
Fire collided with distorted energy, sending shockwaves through the ground.
Elyra raised her hands, forming barriers around Zeph as he repositioned.
"Stay within range!" she called.
"I AM within range!" Zeph snapped, barely dodging an attack. "They're just everywhere!"
And he wasn't wrong.
More were coming.
Too many.
Aren stepped back slightly.
Not retreating.
Observing.
His breathing slowed.
His focus sharpened.
The battlefield noise dulled.
Because something felt wrong.
Not just the number of enemies.
Not just their strength.
Their behavior.
They weren't random.
They were moving—
Toward something.
Or someone.
"…They're targeting," Aren said.
"Obviously!" Zeph shouted.
"…No."
Aren's eyes narrowed.
"They're targeting me."
Silence.
For a split second—
Everyone froze.
Then—
The creatures stopped.
All at once.
Dozens of them.
Still.
Unmoving.
Watching.
Every single one of them—
Turned toward Aren.
"…Okay," Zeph whispered. "That's NOT normal."
Kaien laughed.
"Now THIS is interesting."
Lyra's expression hardened. "Aren… what did you do?"
"…Nothing."
But even as he said it—
He knew that wasn't true.
Because the feeling in his chest—
It was back.
Stronger than before.
Pulling.
Calling.
Responding.
One of the creatures stepped forward.
Slower than the rest.
More stable.
Its form didn't flicker as violently.
Its presence—
Heavier.
"…That one's different," Noctis said quietly.
"Yeah," Kaien replied. "That one's mine."
He stepped forward—
Flames igniting.
"Wait—" Lyra started.
Too late.
Kaien charged.
Full force.
Fire exploded outward as he launched a direct strike at the creature.
Impact—
Blocked.
Silence.
The flames didn't disperse.
They stopped.
Held in place.
The creature raised one arm—
And crushed the fire.
Like it meant nothing.
Kaien's eyes widened—
Just slightly.
"…What?"
The creature moved.
Faster than before.
It struck.
Kaien barely reacted in time, crossing his arms as the impact sent him flying backward.
He crashed into the ground, sliding several meters.
"…Okay," he muttered, pushing himself up. "That one's NOT normal."
"No," Lyra said. "…That's a higher entity."
"Entity?" Zeph repeated. "What does that even—"
The creature turned again.
Toward Aren.
And this time—
It spoke.
"Fragment… detected…"
Aren froze.
The voice wasn't sound.
It was inside his head.
"Incomplete… yet… active…"
"…You can talk…" Aren whispered.
The others stared at him.
"…What?" Zeph said.
"It's communicating," Aren replied.
The creature took another step forward.
The air around it distorted.
"Return… to source…"
Aren's chest tightened violently.
Pain surged through him.
Not like before.
Stronger.
Sharper.
Like something was trying to pull itself out of him.
"…No," he muttered.
The energy around him began to react.
Unstable.
Violent.
The ground cracked beneath his feet.
"Aren!" Elyra shouted.
"Don't let it control you!"
"I'm not—!"
The creature moved again.
Faster.
Stronger.
It reached him in an instant—
Aren reacted.
Energy exploded outward from his body.
Not controlled.
Not stable.
But powerful.
Their forces collided.
The impact shook the entire battlefield.
A massive shockwave tore through the area, pushing everything back.
Dust filled the air.
Silence followed.
For a moment—
Nothing moved.
Then—
Aren stood.
Breathing heavy.
Eyes sharper than before.
The energy around him—
Different now.
Darker.
Deeper.
Alive.
"…Interesting," Kaien said, watching from a distance.
Lyra frowned. "…That's not normal Aether."
Noctis's gaze narrowed.
"…No."
The creature stepped forward again.
Unharmed.
But now—
It was observing him.
Studying him.
"Confirmed…"
"Anomaly… host…"
Aren clenched his fist.
"…I'm not your host."
The creature tilted its head slightly.
"You… belong… to the system…"
"No."
Aren stepped forward.
Energy surged again—
But this time—
He didn't let it explode.
He controlled it.
Barely.
But enough.
"…I don't belong to anything."
For the first time—
The creature paused.
And in that moment—
Aren moved.
Fast.
Faster than before.
His hand struck forward—
Energy compressed into a single point.
Impact—
The creature's form cracked.
Distorted violently.
For a brief moment—
It broke.
But only for a moment.
It reformed instantly.
Stronger.
"…Yeah," Kaien said. "That's definitely a boss."
Zeph groaned. "Why is it ALWAYS a boss?!"
Lyra stepped forward. "We don't win this individually."
"…Agreed," Noctis said.
Elyra raised her hands. "Then we don't fight individually."
A pause.
A shift.
They moved.
Together.
Kaien attacked head-on, drawing its attention.
Lyra froze its movement.
Noctis struck from blind angles.
Zeph disrupted its balance.
Elyra protected them all.
And Aren—
Stood at the center.
The core.
The target.
The key.
The energy inside him surged again.
Stronger.
More responsive.
Like it was waking up.
Like it recognized this moment.
"…Fine," Aren whispered.
"If this is what you want—"
He raised his hand.
The unstable energy gathered.
Condensed.
Focused.
For the first time—
It didn't feel out of control.
It felt—
Aligned.
"…Then I'll use it."
The battlefield trembled.
The creature reacted.
"Correction…"
"Threat level… increasing…"
Aren's eyes glowed faintly.
"…Good."
Because for the first time—
He wasn't just reacting.
He was choosing.
And somewhere far beyond the shattered sky—
Something shifted.
Not curiosity.
Not interest.
Something else.
Recognition.
"…So you've begun," it whispered.
And the war—
Had finally started.
