Chapter 42 - The Hall of Trials

The hall swallowed sound.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

The moment Kael crossed the threshold, the noise of the outside world vanished as if cut away by an invisible blade. The massive doors behind him closed with a deep, final THUD that echoed through stone and bone alike.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

Cold air brushed against his skin.

The temperature inside the chamber felt different—still, ancient, watchful. Torchlight flickered along towering pillars that stretched upward into darkness, their shadows shifting like silent witnesses.

Kael exhaled slowly.

His breath echoed back at him.

Alone.

But he wasn't alone.

Dozens of figures stood around the circular arena.

Commanders.

Officials.

Observers.

Judges.

Their faces unreadable.

Their eyes sharp.

They weren't cheering.

They weren't welcoming.

They were evaluating.

Kael felt the pressure settle onto his shoulders.

Not physical weight.

Expectation.

Pain stirred beneath his bandages.

A deep ache in his ribs pulsed with every heartbeat.

The reminder was clear.

You are not fully healed.

But retreat was no longer an option.

At the far end of the chamber, the commander of the Royal Guard stepped forward. His boots struck the stone floor with measured authority.

Every step deliberate.

Every movement controlled.

"Recruit Kael."

His voice carried effortlessly across the hall.

Calm.

Certain.

Final.

"You stand before the Hall of Trials."

A pause.

Long enough for the words to settle.

"For generations, this place has separated warriors from legends."

The statement hung in the air.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Kael straightened slightly.

Ignoring the pain.

Focusing his breathing.

Steady.

Controlled.

The commander raised one hand.

A deep rumble answered.

Stone shifted beneath the arena floor.

Ancient mechanisms awakened with a grinding roar as dust drifted into the air.

The circular platform at the center began to rise.

Slow.

Massive.

Unstoppable.

When it stopped—

Something stood upon it.

A guardian.

Towering.

Armored.

Silent.

Its body was encased in thick steel plates scarred by countless impacts. No eyes showed beneath the helmet. No face. No emotion.

Only presence.

Only purpose.

Kael's instincts tightened instantly.

Danger.

The commander spoke again.

"Your first trial is endurance."

The guardian moved.

Its head turned.

Metal scraped against metal.

A sound that crawled across the hall like distant thunder.

Then—

It stepped forward.

BOOM.

The entire floor trembled beneath the weight of that single step.

Dust shook loose from the pillars above.

Several observers shifted slightly.

Even they respected its power.

Kael's pulse slowed.

Focus sharpened.

Breathing steadied.

The commander continued.

"You will endure for five minutes."

A pause.

Sharp.

Precise.

"If you fall—"

Silence.

Then—

"You fail."

The words settled into Kael's chest like stone.

Five minutes.

Not victory.

Not dominance.

Survival.

His ribs throbbed again.

Pain spreading outward.

Persistent.

Warning.

A memory flickered in his mind.

The battlefield.

The collapse.

The moment his body nearly broke.

His jaw tightened.

Not again.

The guardian raised its weapon.

A massive war hammer.

Heavy enough to crush bone.

Wide enough to shatter shields.

It lifted the weapon slowly.

Deliberately.

Inevitably.

The hall held its breath.

Then—

The hammer fell.

BOOM.

Stone exploded.

Fragments blasted outward in every direction as the impact shattered the floor where Kael had been standing a heartbeat earlier.

Shockwaves rippled across the arena.

Dust filled the air.

Kael rolled aside instantly.

Pain tore through his ribs.

White-hot.

Blinding.

He forced himself upright.

Breathing hard.

Sweat forming along his brow.

But still standing.

The guardian turned again.

Relentless.

Emotionless.

Unstoppable.

Another step.

BOOM.

The hall trembled once more.

Observers leaned forward.

Interest growing.

Because the trial had only just begun.

The guardian advanced.

Hammer rising again.

Higher this time.

More force.

More intent.

Kael adjusted his stance.

Lower.

Balanced.

Careful.

He didn't rush.

Didn't panic.

Didn't attack.

He endured.

Above the arena, the commander watched with narrowed eyes.

Silent.

Measuring.

Calculating.

Then—

A second voice spoke from the shadows.

Older.

Colder.

Interested.

"Increase pressure."

The command echoed softly across the chamber.

Almost casual.

Almost effortless.

The guardian responded immediately.

A low hum filled the air.

Energy pulsed through the armor.

Faint lines of light ignited across the metal surface.

Kael felt the change instantly.

The weight in the room grew heavier.

Denser.

More dangerous.

The commander spoke again.

This time—

Louder.

Official.

Unmistakable.

"Trial difficulty increased."

A deep tone rang through the chamber.

GONG.

A glowing symbol ignited above the arena.

Burning.

Unforgiving.

Counting.

Time Remaining: 4 Minutes 59 Seconds

Kael looked up.

Breathing hard.

Heart steady.

Eyes focused.

The real trial—

Had just begun.
