Chapter 60: That Girl Must Have Cried Like an Absolute Mess
Serie was momentarily stunned. It wasn't a hero's journey to kill a Demon King, but a story about the journey that begins after the war is over.
"Now that... that is interesting."
"To finally realize that an elf's time and a human's time are worlds apart... I suppose that counts as progress for her."
"That girl, Frieren... she must have been bawling her eyes out, wasn't she?"
Yumesaki recalled the scene of Frieren at Himmel's funeral and nodded.
"She cried her heart out. Actually, it's more accurate to say she cried like a baby."
Serie burst into another fit of laughter, as if she had just heard the most delightful piece of news. "What a shame I couldn't witness that in person. I could have mocked her for that for the next ten thousand years."
Yumesaki: "..."
Ah, so that's how it is. The concept of time for elves really was on a completely different scale than for humans.
"Would you like to read the manga?" Yumesaki asked.
"No need." Serie shook her head, giving him a meaningful smile. "Don't tell me you think I can't use foresight magic?"
Foresight Magic was a very rare and unique type of magic in the world of Frieren. It allowed one to see into the future. In the original plot, only two figures were known to have mastered it.
The first was the man dubbed the "Strongest Hero of Humanity" before Himmel's time—the Hero of the South.
The second was a member of the demon race: Schlacht the Omniscient.
Schlacht could use this magic to see up to a thousand years into the future, simulating countless branching paths in his mind. He could even communicate within someone's memories with people from the future who were capable of peering into said memories.
The Hero of the South, using the same magic, had been undefeated in his battles against the Demon King's army.
So, what happened when these two met?
Schlacht acted without a shred of honor. To stop the Hero of the South, he led all the Seven Sages of Destruction to ambush him. In the end, the Hero of the South fell—but not before taking three of the Seven Sages down with him and dying alongside Schlacht.
The Hero of the South had seen this outcome a year before the battle even happened. He understood that even if he avoided the fight that day, he would eventually have to face Schlacht in the future because the enemy could also see the future.
Thus, to pave a way forward for humanity, the Hero of the South bravely stepped into the trap, thinning the enemy's top ranks and fighting to the death. This was one of the reasons Himmel was later able to succeed.
As for Serie—a living grimoire from the mythic era who possessed nearly every spell in history—it wouldn't be strange at all if she knew this magic. If she truly wanted to, she could likely peer into the future to see Frieren's tearful breakdown for herself.
However, she didn't seem interested in using such magic just to peek. Sensing this, Yumesaki didn't press the issue and changed the subject.
"What do you think of this world, Great Mage Serie?"
"Just call me Serie."
Serie thought back to the manga she had just read and chuckled. "It's a very intriguing world. Especially the Devil Fruits. I wonder... are they actually inhabited by devils?"
Yumesaki shook his head. "I honestly don't know. But I can take you to meet a Devil Fruit user. Or better yet, I can give you a Devil Fruit."
"Oh? You have one?"
"I don't personally, but some of my friends do," Yumesaki said. He was, of course, referring to Tobirama and the others.
"Which ones do you have?" Serie asked curiously.
"The Slow-Slow Fruit, the Castle-Castle Fruit, and the Bomb-Bomb Fruit."
"Not interested." As soon as she heard the names, Serie shook her head. "The ones that interest me right now are the Yomi Yomi no Mi or the Soru Soru no Mi."
"Even in my world, there is no magic that can truly resurrect the dead, let alone magic that can manipulate souls at will."
"The user of the Yomi Yomi no Mi, Brook, is currently in the Florian Triangle," Yumesaki noted. "If you're interested, I can have someone take you there."
Serie was indeed interested. she turned to look at Yumesaki for a moment.
"You're being very proactive in helping me. Is there something you want from me in return?"
Yumesaki nodded without trying to hide it. Trying to play games with an ancient monster who had lived for thousands of years was a fool's errand. It was better to assume she could see right through any petty schemes.
"To be honest, Serie, I want to learn magic."
Serie chuckled. "I see. You want to learn magic. Unfortunately, you aren't from our world. There's no guarantee you can even learn our world's magic."
"Don't worry about that."
Yumesaki spoke calmly. "When I opened the door to your world, I learned your language, and simultaneously gained the qualification to learn your world's magic."
To prove he wasn't lying, Yumesaki added: "Technically, I'm not a native of the One Piece world either, yet I was still able to awaken this world's Conqueror's Haki."
"Conqueror's Haki?"
Serie's eyes sparked. She had been interested in that power while reading the manga. She hadn't expected Yumesaki to actually possess it.
"May I see it?"
"Certainly."
Yumesaki nodded. Sparks of red and black lightning crackled around him as his wild Conqueror's Haki erupted, surging toward Serie like a mountain collapse or a tsunami.
The invisible pressure blew Serie's hair back, but she herself remained completely unfazed. Yumesaki's Haki was indeed powerful, but against an ancient monster who had existed since the dawn of time, it was ultimately ineffective.
She had lived through the turning of eras and was history itself; she wasn't about to be intimidated by a bit of Haki.
"I see. So this is what 'Conqueror's Haki' feels like."
She murmured to herself as she felt the pressure. At the same time, an aura of equal weight exploded from her body, neutralizing Yumesaki's Haki.
"Mental Intimidation Magic."
Serie spoke calmly. "It is a spell that can suppress others with a strong mind, causing them to lose consciousness. It seems very similar to your Conqueror's Haki."
"However, this Intimidation Magic only applies mental pressure; it cannot create physical damage. In that regard, it differs slightly from Haki."
"By the way," she added, "can you perform Haki Infusion?"
"I can," Yumesaki replied.
Serie looked at him with a satisfied expression. "Show me."
"Understood."
The moment he finished speaking, invisible Conqueror's Haki coated his hands, emitting fierce arcs of black and red lightning. In the next instant, Yumesaki launched an attack toward Serie.
