Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: New Beginning, Old Shadows

The next morning, the camp was busy with repairs.

Broken stones were stacked again. New runes were drawn on the walls. People moved quietly, still tired from the big fight.

Kai sat on a flat rock near the edge of the camp. The sun was trying to shine through the cracked sky, but purple light still leaked through.

He felt different. Not fully himself yet, but closer than before. The nine Echoes inside him were quiet. They no longer fought for control. They waited.

The small pieces of Nyxar and Veyra were even quieter, like sleeping animals in the corner of his mind.

He opened his status screen.

Status Update

Fractured Echo Weaver Level 7

Active Echoes: 9/10

Overlap Risk: 35 percent Low

God Fragment Status: Nyxar and Veyra sealed and weakened (12 percent combined)

Note: The fragments are resting. They may wake if you take strong new Echoes.

Kai closed the screen and smiled a little.

"Thirty five percent. That is the lowest it has been in a long time."

Lira walked over and sat beside him. She looked tired but peaceful.

"How are you feeling today?"

"Better," Kai said. "The voices are not shouting anymore. They feel like… old friends who finally learned to take turns."

He tried speaking with one of the old voices on purpose.

Reginald came out politely. "Good morning, my dear. The weather is quite unusual today."

Kai switched back to his normal voice and laughed.

"See? I can control them now. Mostly."

Lira smiled. "That is good. The elders say the fragments will stay weak as long as you do not take too many new Echoes too fast. We will train you here to keep them under control."

Mira ran up to them carrying a small bag.

"Look what I made!"

She pulled out three new cards. They glowed softly.

"Kai's Normal Laugh Card. Kai's Snob Voice Card. And my favorite — Kai's Real Smile Card!"

She threw the last one. A soft, genuine laugh and a warm smile appeared in the air for a second.

Kai shook his head, smiling.

"You really turned my suffering into a card collection."

Mira grinned proudly. "Of course! They are limited edition. Only one of each."

Elder Voss joined them. He looked at Kai carefully.

"You did well yesterday, young man. Most people would have been lost after taking the tenth Echo. You fought back and kept your soul. That is rare."

Kai nodded. "Thank you for the ritual. Without it, I would have been gone."

The elder sat down.

"The big Quake is still coming. Maybe in a few weeks. When it arrives, many more people will awaken and many more will die. You will be tempted to collect again. You must be careful."

Kai looked at the cracked sky.

"I know. But I also know I cannot hide forever. If the world is breaking, I need to get stronger. The right way this time."

Lira placed her hand on his.

"We will help you. All of us."

Mira raised her hand. "Me too! I will make support cards for you. Healing cards, speed cards, funny voice cards when you need to laugh."

Kai felt warm inside.

"Thank you. Both of you. I do not know what I would do without you."

They sat together for a while, talking about small things.

Mira told stories about the cards she wanted to make in the future.

"I will have a full Kai collection. Normal Kai, King Kai, God Kai, and one special card called 'The Boy Who Refused to Die'."

Lira talked about the fate threads she could see now.

"They are clearer. Your future has many branches, but one strong line keeps appearing. A line where you stay yourself and help stop the gods."

Kai listened quietly. For the first time since he woke up in the morgue, he felt hope.

Not the crazy power hope but real hope.

He still had nine Echoes. He still had small god fragments inside. The Veil was still breaking.

But he was not alone and he was still Kai Voss.Later that day, a scout returned to the camp.He looked worried.

"Elder! There is movement in the forest. A large group of Echo Hunters is coming this way. They heard about the big fight. They want the boy who fought two gods."

Elder Voss stood up.

"Prepare the defenses. We will not let them take him."

Kai stood up too. His eyes were calm but determined.

"Let them come. I am not the same person they are looking for."

Mira pulled out her new cards.

"I am ready! Time to test my Kai collection in real battle."

Lira's silver threads appeared around her hands.

"We protect our own."

Kai looked at his friends, then at the forest path where the hunters would come.

He smiled, the old sarcastic gamer smile."After fighting two gods, a group of hunters does not sound so bad."

But deep inside, he knew the real test was still ahead. The big Quake was coming, other gods were watching and the small fragments of Nyxar and Veyra were sleeping, but not dead.

Kai took a deep breath. He was ready for whatever came next.

As long as he had Lira and Mira by his side.
