That evening, Avery had just returned from school, tired but still carrying her usual shy brightness. She was unpacking her bag in the living room when Axel entered, the soft glow from the desk lamp casting shadows across his caramel-toned skin. His blue eyes were sharp, and the way he looked at her made her stomach flip—both nervous and reassured at the same time.
He didn't waste time. "Avery," he said, voice low and calm, but with that unmistakable edge, "I noticed some unusual charges on my credit card today."
Avery froze, her hands tightening around her notebook. "Unusual… sir?"
Axel nodded, leaning casually against the doorway. "Yes. Things you wouldn't normally buy, items that aren't even at the apartment. Do you have any idea what happened?"
Avery's throat went dry. "I… I haven't used it, Sir. I've been careful. I… I don't know what happened."
He let the words hang in the air for a moment, studying her closely. Then he softened slightly. "I don't think this was your doing. But someone close to you… someone who had access… seems to have borrowed it without permission."
Avery bit her lip, worry tightening in her chest. "Someone…?"
Axel didn't answer directly. He simply gave her a faint nod. "Think about it. I want you to handle it. You know the people around you better than I do. I trust you to resolve this."
Avery swallowed hard, her mind racing. She nodded quietly. "Yes, Sir. I… I will."
The next day at Whitestone Academy, Avery found herself pacing the courtyard before lunch. Gabriella sat at a nearby bench, fidgeting with her bag. Avery took a deep breath, summoning courage.
"Gabby…" she began, her voice steady but firm. Gabriella looked up, startled, sensing the seriousness in Avery's tone.
"What… Avery? What's wrong?" Gabriella asked, trying to keep her casual smile.
Avery sat down opposite her. "It's about my credit card… the missing charges. Was it you?"
Gabriella's face went pale. She looked down at her hands, trembling. Then, tears welled in her eyes, and she whispered, "I… I really needed the money. I didn't mean to… to steal from you. I just… I didn't know what else to do."
Avery's heart twisted. "Gabby… why didn't you come to me first?"
"I was scared! And embarrassed!" Gabriella admitted, letting the tears fall freely now. "I thought… if I returned it later, no one would notice. I didn't mean to hurt you, Avery. I… I promise."
Avery's initial anger softened, replaced by a mix of concern and disappointment. "Okay… we'll figure this out. But you need to be honest next time. Always. Do you understand?"
Gabriella nodded quickly, sniffling. "I understand… I promise, Avery. I really am sorry."
From a distance, Axel observed the exchange quietly. His piercing blue eyes softened as he watched Avery handle the confrontation with calm and patience. He didn't step in; he didn't need to. She was strong enough to face this on her own—and he knew she could.
Avery reached out, placing a gentle hand on Gabriella's. "It's okay, Gabby. Just… don't ever let it happen again."
Gabriella nodded, tears still glimmering in her eyes but a faint smile breaking through. "I won't. I promise."
The tension that had hovered over Avery since the card went missing finally eased. The anxiety, the worry, and the gnawing suspense melted away. She had confronted the problem, Gabriella had confessed, and now there was a sense of closure. Axel's quiet observation, his subtle trust in Avery, reminded her that she was never alone—even when handling difficult situations herself.
