When I entered the apartment, he was nowhere in sight. The space looked almost identical to the last one, open and bare, no bedroom in sight.
The bed sat in the middle, unmade, the sheets half-dragged onto the floor like they had been pulled off in a hurry.
"Shawn?" I called out, but my voice came out more shaken than I expected. Unease crept deeper into me as I moved further in, my steps restless, my eyes scanning everything too quickly.
Then I noticed another door.
It had to be the bathroom.
I moved toward it, my chest tightening with every step, and just as I got closer, I heard laboured breaths, uneven and strained, mixed with low, pained groans.
My heart slammed against my ribs. I didn't think. I pushed the door open, and the sight that came in front of me made my knees weaken instantly.
