Chapter 116 - 116: Assessment

The week of absolute rest did wonders.

When Eric finally stepped out of the Saffron Grand Hotel, the lingering physical and mental fatigue from the Williams estate incident was completely gone. His mind was sharp, his focus absolute. He had enjoyed the peace, but he was a trainer. Complacency was a luxury he couldn't afford.

He immediately got back to work.

He bypassed the bustling city center and headed straight for the dense, sprawling woodlands bordering the northern edge of Saffron City. The wild Pokémon here were relatively strong, making it an ideal training ground.

Finding a wide, grassy clearing beside a small stream, Eric dropped his bag and released his entire team.

"Alright, vacation is over," Eric said, clapping his hands once. "Time to get back to the grind."

The Pokémon responded with varied, but enthusiastic cries. Poliwrath pounded his fists together. Fearow stretched her wings, fully healed and eager. Growlithe let out a sharp bark, while Ralts hovered shyly but determinately beside Gardevoir. Haunter emerged from the shadows, his aura noticeably calmer and more controlled than a week ago.

Eric opened his system, pulling up their data. It was time for a full assessment.

Eric analyzed the data. He had a clear, distinct goal for each of them.

"Haunter, you're up first," Eric said.

Haunter floated forward. Over the past week, his core had successfully digested the intense strain of pushing his Ghost-type energy to Quasi-Grade 5. He had regained complete control over it, no longer leaking freezing aura unconsciously.

"Your Ghost-type energy is terrifying, but your Poison-type energy is lagging entirely too far behind," Eric explained. "An imbalance like that creates blind spots. Starting today, you are focusing entirely on Poison-type energy. We will get back to training your ghost-type energy once Poison reaches Grade 4."

"Haunt..." Haunter groaned theatrically, crossing his arms, but he nodded. He understood the necessity.

"Poliwrath, come here."

The muscular Water/Fighting-type stepped up.

"You gained a massive boost in physical strength upon evolving," Eric said, looking up at the imposing brawler. "But in your recent battles, particularly the one with Erika, you relied purely on brute force to break through their defenses. That works against opponents who try to overpower you, but against a technical fighter, brute strength is easily redirected."

Eric pulled out his phone, projecting a holographic wireframe from the massive database he had downloaded from Bill's PC. The hologram demonstrated various martial arts stances and parrying techniques utilized by King-level fighting-type Pokémon.

"I want you to improve your fighting sense. Less brawling, more finesse," Eric instructed. "Don't just hit hard. Hit smart. Learn to deflect force, read your opponent's footwork, and strike the joints. We're refining your move mastery today."

Poliwrath's eyes lit up with intense focus. He immediately took a refined stance, carefully mimicking the holographic projection.

Eric then turned to Fearow.

"Fearow, you're on aerial duty," Eric said. "Your speed is excellent, but your maneuverability at top speeds still has slight delays. I want you running obstacle courses through the densest part of the canopy. Focus on mastering Drill Peck and Aerial Ace transitions without losing momentum."

Fearow let out a sharp, determined cry and immediately took to the sky, diving straight into the thickest cluster of trees to begin her drills.

Finally, Eric looked down at the two juniors of the team.

Growlithe was wagging his tail, practically vibrating with excitement. Ralts was hiding slightly behind Gardevoir's dress, peeking out nervously.

"Growlithe, Ralts. You two are teaming up," Eric said, his tone softening just a fraction.

He looked specifically at the tiny Psychic-type. "Ralts, I know fighting is scary. But the only way to ensure you never feel helpless again is to learn how to defend yourself. You don't have to do it alone. You have Growlithe watching your back, and I am right here."

Ralts looked up at Eric. She could feel his calm, steady reassurance through her empathic abilities. She looked at her mother, who offered a gentle, encouraging smile. Taking a deep breath, Ralts stepped forward, her tiny hands glowing with a faint blue light.

"Growl!" Growlithe barked happily, bumping his head against her shoulder as if to say he had her back.

"Good," Eric smiled. "Let's find some low-level wild Pokémon. We're focusing on real-life combat experience for you two."

The training session began in earnest.

The clearing quickly filled with the sounds of intense effort. Haunter hovered over the stream, focusing purely on his Poison-type energy to generate corrosive, bubbling Sludge Waves, steadily improving his mastery.

Poliwrath spent hours shadowboxing against the holographic projections. Instead of throwing wild, heavy punches, he practiced shifting his weight, using minimal movements to deflect incoming attacks and countering with precise, sharp Brick Breaks.

High above, the sound of snapping branches echoed as Fearow pushed her aerial maneuvers to the absolute limit, threading the needle between tight oak branches at breakneck speeds.

Meanwhile, Eric walked through the tall grass with Growlithe and Ralts.

They encountered a Level 9 wild Oddish.

"Growlithe, circle it! Use Ember to cut off its escape!" Eric commanded.

Growlithe darted to the side and unleashing a burst of flames that forced the Oddish to stumble backward.

"Ralts, now! Confusion!"

Ralts closed her eyes, focusing her psychic energy. A wave of blue light enveloped the Oddish, lifting it slightly into the air and disorienting it, leaving it completely open.

"Finish it, Growlithe! Bite!"

With a swift leap, Growlithe struck, knocking the Oddish unconscious.

"Good job," Eric praised, tossing them both a small piece of an advance Pokéblock. Ralts cheered happily, this was her first fight under Eric's command.

Back at the camp, Gardevoir sat gracefully on a soft patch of grass, nibbling on her advanced-level recovery block. Her core was steadily healing, and the warm, peaceful environment was exactly what she needed.

She watched Eric guide her daughter with a patient, yet firm hand. She saw the absolute trust the rest of his team placed in him.

Joy filled her heart as she felt at peace.
