Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 6: FIRST CRACK IN THE ARMOR

It was past midnight.

The office was quiet.

Too quiet.

Amara rubbed her temples, staring at the endless numbers on her screen.

She hadn't realized how tired she was—

Until—

"Still here?"

She looked up.

Adrian.

Of course.

"Some of us actually work," she said.

He raised an eyebrow. "I've been here longer than you."

"Impossible."

"Check the security logs."

She huffed softly—but there was no real bite in it.

Not anymore.

He walked in, placing a cup on her desk.

She blinked.

"Coffee?"

"You look like you need it."

Amara hesitated.

Then took it.

"Thank you."

The words felt… unfamiliar.

He noticed.

"You're not used to saying that, are you?"

"No."

"Try it again."

She gave him a look.

"No."

He chuckled quietly.

And for a moment—

They weren't rivals.

They weren't CEOs.

Just two people… tired and human.

Adrian sat across from her, loosening his tie slightly.

"You don't have to do everything alone," he said.

The softness in his voice caught her off guard.

"I do," she replied.

"Why?"

She looked down at her coffee.

Because trusting people meant losing them.

Because relying on someone meant giving them the power to hurt you.

But she didn't say any of that.

"I just do."

Adrian didn't push.

Instead, he said quietly—

"You don't have to with me."

Her chest tightened.

Because for the first time—

Someone wasn't trying to take from her.

Someone was offering to stay.

She looked at him.

Really looked.

And saw something she hadn't before.

Not the CEO.

Not the rival.

But the man.

And he looked… just as tired as she felt.

"Adrian," she said softly.

It was the first time she used his name like that.

Not formal.

Not distant.

Something shifted.

He noticed.

Of course he did.

"Amara."

And just like that—

A wall cracked.
