Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Unknown

Art entered the garage.

Kane close behind.

A truck was missing.

The garage door was already open.

Art walked down the steps and turned toward a two-seat dune buggy.

She grabbed the keys.

"Kane."

She opened the driver's door.

"Let's go."

Kane moved toward her.

The key was inserted.

The ignition clicked.

Art pushed the pedal.

The dune buggy took off, heading toward the central district of Maker's City.

...

The sun reached its peak.

A quiet wasteland stretched around them.

The truck continued toward its destination.

Grimm, Elaina, and Jean were heading toward the western district, with Dean transporting them.

Jean pressed a miniature projector.

A green map of the western district appeared.

"We need to discuss our strategy."

Elaina poked Grimm in the arm.

"We're fine," she poked him again, "we got explosives."

Grimm looked slightly amused.

"This isn't about firepower," Jean rebutted.

"Have either of you looked at the materials list?"

Elaina and Grimm both raised their chins.

Their index fingers pressed onto it.

"Nope."

Jean sighed.

Why did I even ask?

She pointed at Grimm.

"You help Elaina look for Joe. I'll get the parts."

She pointed at the map.

"The parts we need are in this section. It's a ways away from where Joe disappeared."

Grimm leaned forward.

"So I can go wild if a Watchman appears, right?"

"Yes."

Grimm smiled widely.

Elaina softly giggled.

Jean shook her head.

Dean informed them that they had reached the western district.

The three of them exited the vehicle.

Jean opened the trunk, grabbing an empty bag.

Elaina got out and stretched her arms.

Grimm lightly pumped his fist.

Elaina noticed, giggling softly.

Jean turned forwards them.

"Let's go."

She headed toward the desolate city district.

Elaina and Grimm followed.

Buildings were broken around them.

Streets were destroyed.

No birds flew overhead.

Piles of scrap and junk scattered around them.

Jean split off from the others.

She headed toward her objective.

Grimm and Elaina moved toward the old residential district.

Elaina walked close behind Grimm.

"This place gives me the creeps."

Grimm continued forward.

"You said it."

Elaina briefly paused.

The distance between them increased.

His stride didn't stop.

Grimm pulled out his mini projector.

He opened the map.

"Joe's last signal is about 500 feet away from our current position."

He turned to face Elaina.

A street sign creaked.

His eyes narrowed.

Empty street.

She wasn't there.

Sudden disappearance.

No sound.

Gone.

Something stood before him.

An unknown enemy.

...

The dune buggy bounced across the rocks.

Wind rushed around them.

Dust kicked up behind.

Art stopped the buggy and stepped out, looking at Maker's City in the distance.

Kane followed.

She pointed toward a wall.

Rustic bronze.

Golden gears adorned the gates.

A clock sat in the middle.

"That's the southern entrance to the central district."

She observed the tight security.

"Our disguises should work, but have your identification card ready as well."

Kane stepped closer.

"...Yeah."

His gaze rested on the central clock tower.

A crack shifted slightly.

Art began moving down the cliff toward the gate.

Kane followed shortly behind.

They were stopped by a guard.

"Identification."

They handed their identification cards to him.

He scanned them.

Then directed them into the city.

"Next."

Art and Kane entered the city.

Cogs shifted at set intervals.

People walked in unison.

Many clocks ticked together.

Art pulled out the device Arthur had given her.

She raised her hand into the air, the device hidden in her palm.

The screen shifted.

30%.

Art put the device away.

"Come on. We have to test other areas."

Kane was still.

Looking at the central clock tower.

A chain rattled softly.

Art noticed his gaze.

Unfocused.

She lightly tapped his back.

His head turned toward her.

"We need to get to a fountain to test the water."

Art walked toward the sound of flowing water.

Kane followed.

His attention remained fixed.

On the clock tower.
