Chapter 4 - The Alpha Who Came for Her

The forest did not welcome strangers.

It went quiet when Kael entered.

Not silent—never silent—but aware.

Every step he took seemed to press into the earth with purpose, his presence bending the air around him in a way most creatures instinctively understood.

Danger.

His men followed behind him, but at a distance.

Not because he had ordered it.

Because none of them wanted to stand too close when his wolf was this close to the surface.

Kael didn't slow.

The bond pulled harder with every step.

Sharp. Urgent.

Alive.

She's here.

His jaw tightened.

The scent reached him next.

Blood.

Old wood.

Fear.

His wolf surged forward, furious.

They had touched her.

They had hurt her.

The pack borders came into view—barely marked, but clear to anyone who knew what to look for. Weak territory. Poorly guarded. Desperate.

Pathetic.

Kael didn't stop.

He crossed the boundary like it didn't exist.

Behind him, his men hesitated for half a second before following.

They knew what this meant.

This wasn't a visit.

This was a statement.

The first wolf appeared seconds later.

He stepped out from the trees, posture tense, eyes narrowing as he recognized who stood before him.

"Alpha Kael," he said carefully.

Kael didn't look at him.

"Move."

The word wasn't loud.

But it didn't need to be.

The wolf stepped aside instantly.

More emerged as they moved deeper into the territory. None of them attacked. None of them spoke. They watched.

They knew.

Every single one of them knew.

Kael was not someone you challenged.

Not unless you wanted your entire pack erased.

The bond pulled again.

Closer.

Kael's steps quickened.

The house came into view—large, worn, and stained with years of control and decay. The scent of her was stronger here.

Mixed with blood.

His control snapped.

The front door didn't open.

It shattered.

Wood splintered under the force as Kael stepped inside, his presence filling the space instantly.

"Where is she?"

The question cut through the house like a blade.

The Alpha appeared at the top of the stairs, his expression hard, his posture rigid with forced authority.

"You don't belong here."

Kael's gaze lifted slowly.

Cold.

Unimpressed.

"You don't belong breathing."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

The Alpha descended the stairs, his eyes flicking briefly to the broken door before returning to Kael.

"You're crossing a line."

Kael took one step forward.

The entire room seemed to shift.

"You crossed it first."

The bond pulsed violently.

Upstairs.

His attention snapped toward it.

Her.

Without another word, he moved.

The Alpha stepped into his path.

"You don't take what belongs to this pack."

Kael stopped.

Looked at him.

Really looked.

And for a moment—

The illusion of power shattered.

"You think she belongs to you?"

His voice dropped, quiet and lethal.

The Alpha held his ground, but something in his eyes flickered.

"She was found in my territory. Raised under my authority. She—"

Kael moved.

Too fast.

His hand closed around the Alpha's throat and slammed him into the wall with a force that cracked the wood behind him.

The room froze.

Every wolf present went still.

Kael leaned in slightly, his grip tightening.

"Say another word," he murmured, "and I will remind you exactly who you're speaking to."

The Alpha's breath hitched.

Kael released him.

Not out of mercy.

Out of disinterest.

"You're alive because I'm not here for you," he continued. "Be grateful."

He turned.

The stairs creaked under his weight as he moved upward, each step fueled by the bond that now felt like it was tearing him apart from the inside.

The door at the end of the hall was locked.

It didn't stay that way.

The wood split as he forced it open.

The scent hit him first.

Blood.

Pain.

Her.

Kael stopped in the doorway.

For a second—

Just one—

Everything inside him went still.

Nyra lay on the floor, unmoving.

Too small.

Too still.

Too hurt.

Something deep inside him snapped.

He crossed the room in two strides and dropped to one knee beside her. His hand hovered over her for a moment, as if unsure.

Then he touched her.

Warm.

Alive.

Barely.

Rage burned through him.

Carefully—more carefully than anyone who knew him would have believed possible—he slid one arm beneath her and lifted her into his arms.

She didn't wake.

Her head fell lightly against his chest, her breath shallow against his neck.

Kael stood.

Turned.

And walked out.

No one stopped him.

No one dared.

At the bottom of the stairs, the Alpha stood waiting.

Foolish.

"You take her," he said, voice strained but defiant, "and you declare war."

Kael didn't slow.

"Then consider it declared."

The Alpha's eyes hardened. "You think your pack is untouchable?"

Kael stopped in front of him.

Nyra remained unconscious in his arms, her body small against his strength.

He looked down at the Alpha like he was nothing.

"My pack is the strongest in this world."

Each word landed heavier than the last.

"You are nothing."

The room held its breath.

The Alpha clenched his jaw. "You don't know what she is."

Kael's grip on Nyra tightened slightly.

"I don't need to."

"She will bring destruction."

Kael's gaze darkened.

"She already did."

Silence followed.

Then—

A faint shift.

Nyra moved.

Barely.

But enough.

Kael felt it.

His expression changed instantly.

Not softer.

Sharper.

Protective.

"She needs a doctor," he said coldly. "Immediately."

The Alpha scoffed. "She's weak. She won't survive what's coming."

Kael stepped closer.

Close enough that the Alpha had to tilt his head slightly upward.

"You're alive right now," Kael said quietly, "because she is."

The meaning settled slowly.

Dangerously.

"If she didn't need to survive this," he continued, "you would already be dead."

The Alpha didn't respond.

Didn't move.

Kael turned and walked past him.

Out of the house.

Out of the territory.

And into war.
