Chapter 1 - Cycle 1: Opening.

The sky above the city was swallowed by violent storm clouds, thick masses of black and grey that rolled endlessly over one another while streaks of lightning split apart the heavens above. Thunder roared somewhere beyond the towering skyline, deep enough to shake windows and rattle old pipes hidden beneath the streets below. Rain descended without mercy upon the city beneath, flooding roads, drowning alleyways, and turning every reflective surface into pools of shimmering neon. Massive skyscrapers stretched upward like steel monoliths disappearing into the darkness above, their windows glowing faintly through the storm while elevated railways groaned between them with sparks occasionally jumping from old electrical lines. Beneath these towers sprawled the lower districts of the city, a dense maze of apartment complexes, convenience stores, underground train entrances, cramped restaurants, smoking vents, and endless alleyways hidden between the structures. The city itself felt alive despite the weather, cars crawled slowly through flooded streets while crowds of exhausted people hurried beneath umbrellas and jackets, each person eager to escape the storm before the night worsened further.

…A splash of water echoed through one particularly narrow alleyway as a pair of worn black sneakers stepped directly into a shallow puddle. The figure moved through the rain at a quick pace, hands tucked deeply into the pockets of a dark jacket while cold wind pushed damp strands of brown hair against his forehead. Thin black glasses rested unevenly along the bridge of the boy's nose, slightly fogged from the warmth of his breath meeting the freezing air around him. He looked exhausted more than anything else. Tired eyes stared ahead while his posture carried the familiar weight of someone worn down by repetition. School, work, sleep, repeat. The city swallowed people whole like that, turning every day into another identical cycle until entire weeks blurred together without meaning.

The boy eventually stepped beneath the flickering overhang of a small convenience store built between two larger apartment buildings. The old neon sign above buzzed loudly while rainwater streamed endlessly from its edges onto the pavement below. Through the windows, shelves of cheap food and drinks could be seen beneath dull fluorescent lighting while a tired cashier leaned against the counter with little interest in anything happening around him. Luuka stood there for a moment, staring silently through the glass while reaching into his pocket to count the few coins remaining inside. Barely enough for instant noodles and a drink. Again. He sighed quietly before stepping toward the entrance, though before his hand could reach the door, shouting erupted somewhere farther down the street.

At first nobody nearby reacted. The city was loud by nature, arguments and violence blending naturally into the endless noise of traffic and crowded sidewalks. Yet the shouting continued, sharper now, followed by the unmistakable sound of someone being slammed violently against metal. Several pedestrians immediately lowered their heads and hurried away from the direction of the noise while others crossed the street entirely to avoid it. Luuka turned his attention toward the source instinctively, his eyes settling upon the entrance of a narrow alley across the road where several figures could be seen beneath the rain.

Three older men surrounded someone much younger near the wall, one gripping the front of the smaller boy's hoodie aggressively while another searched through a ripped backpack that had already spilled most of its contents across the soaked pavement below. Blood ran visibly from the corner of the younger boy's mouth while rainwater streamed endlessly down his face. "I told you I'm trying to get the money!" the smaller boy shouted desperately, only to receive another strike hard enough to send him collapsing against the wall again. "You had your chance," one of the older men growled, grabbing him by the collar once more. "Now stop wasting our damn time."

Luuka remained still for several seconds. He could have walked away. Anyone smart would have. People survived in this city by minding their own business and pretending not to see things that did not involve them. Yet despite every logical thought telling him to leave, his feet moved anyway. He crossed the street quickly while rain hammered endlessly against the pavement beneath him before stepping directly into the alleyway. Water dripped steadily from rusted fire escapes overhead while the smell of damp brick and cigarette smoke lingered heavily through the confined space. "That's enough," Luuka finally said, his voice calm despite the nervous tension tightening in his chest.

The three men immediately turned toward him. One laughed outright while another shook his head in disbelief. "Seriously?" one muttered while looking Luuka up and down dismissively. "Kid, this has nothing to do with you." The tallest among them stepped forward slowly, rolling his shoulders beneath a soaked leather jacket. "You trying to be some kind of hero?" Luuka swallowed slightly though his posture remained firm. "Three against one isn't exactly impressive," he answered quietly. Before anyone else could respond, the atmosphere inside the alley shifted unnaturally.

The rain itself seemed to slow midair. Shadows stretched longer against the walls while the temperature suddenly dropped hard enough for breath to become visible. A crushing pressure settled throughout the alleyway, thick and suffocating, like the air itself had suddenly become heavier. The men noticed it instantly. Nervous expressions replaced their confidence while one of them glanced around frantically. "What the hell is this?" he muttered beneath his breath.

At the far end of the alley stood another figure.

Tall. Thin. Motionless beneath the rain.

Dark layered clothing hung from his body unevenly while pale markings stretched beneath his eyes like fractures spreading through stone. Rainwater curved strangely around him before ever touching his skin while the space nearest to him distorted subtly, bending light and shadow alike. The deeper darkness behind him almost seemed alive, shifting faintly against the alley walls despite there being no wind strong enough to move them.

One of the older men took an uneasy step backward. "Who the hell are you supposed to be?"

The stranger tilted his head slightly before answering in a calm emotionless voice.

"Ruin." The name itself felt wrong somehow, heavy enough to make the silence afterward unbearable.

Without warning, one of the men was launched sideways hard enough to crack the brick wall upon impact before collapsing motionless into the flooded pavement below. Another suddenly slammed face-first into the ground as invisible pressure crushed him downward violently. Panic consumed the remaining man instantly as he attempted to flee deeper into the street, only for his body to lift several feet into the air as though gravity itself no longer affected him.

Luuka froze completely.

Ruin never touched any of them.

The space around him simply obeyed.

The pale man slowly turned his attention toward Luuka now, his expression shifting slightly with faint curiosity. "Interesting," he murmured quietly. "You can feel it already."

The pressure throughout the alley intensified immediately. Luuka's chest tightened painfully while invisible force pressed inward against his entire body from every direction. Breathing became difficult. His knees nearly buckled beneath the weight as the air around him distorted violently. Fear surged through him instantly, sharp enough to overwhelm rational thought completely, yet beneath the panic, something deeper awakened in response.

A violent pulse erupted outward from his body.

Wind exploded through the alley hard enough to scatter debris, trash, and rainwater in every direction while cracks spread beneath Luuka's feet across the pavement below. The crushing pressure vanished instantly as invisible distortions rippled through the air surrounding him like fractured glass. Luuka stared down at his trembling hands in complete shock while the space nearest to his fingertips warped unnaturally with every movement he made.

Ruin watched him silently for several moments before speaking once more. "An Affinity," he muttered softly. "Spatial distortion. Rare." said Ruin.

"I don't know what any of this means," Luuka answered breathlessly, struggling to understand the power surging violently through his body.

"You will soon enough."

The pavement shattered beneath Ruin's step as he suddenly rushed forward with terrifying speed. Instinct overtook thought entirely. Luuka threw his arm outward blindly and the space between them compressed violently before detonating into a blast powerful enough to obliterate part of the alley wall beside them. Concrete erupted outward into the street while nearby windows shattered from the impact alone. Yet Ruin barely slowed.

"Unstable," he said coldly.

An invisible force slammed into Luuka immediately afterward, ripping him off his feet and hurling him across the alley hard enough to dent a metal dumpster inward on impact. Agony exploded through his back while his glasses flew loose across the flooded pavement nearby. Rain poured endlessly over him while pain tore through every breath he attempted to take.

Ruin approached slowly through the destruction, the distorted air around him twisting harder with every step. "You awakened too early," he said calmly. "Your body hasn't adapted yet."

Luuka forced himself upward despite the pain consuming him. Fear finally settled completely into his chest now. He did not understand the power inside him, nor the monster standing before him, but one truth had become painfully obvious.

If nobody stopped Ruin, he was going to die there. Ruin slowly raised one hand. Then another voice interrupted him. "You always choose terrible places for this." Ruin stopped instantly.

A woman stepped casually into the alleyway through the pouring rain, one hand resting within the pocket of a long black coat while silver-black hair shifted lightly against the storm around her. Sharp blue eyes studied the destruction briefly before settling directly upon Ruin himself. Unlike him, she felt entirely human. Not harmless, nor weak, but grounded in a way Ruin simply wasn't. Faint scars lined the visible parts of her hands beneath dark gloves while exhaustion rested quietly behind her calm expression, the sort carried only by someone who had survived far too much already.

Ruin's pale eyes narrowed slightly. "Stèfan."

She sighed softly while stepping over shattered concrete and broken glass alike. "You really know how to make a mess."

The pressure between them shifted violently. Even the rain itself spiraled unnaturally through the alley now while cracks quietly spread across the pavement beneath their feet. Luuka could feel immediately that these two knew each other, and somehow that realization frightened him even more than the destruction surrounding them.

Stèfan glanced briefly toward Luuka, her expression softening slightly upon noticing the blood running from his mouth. "You still breathing over there?" she asked calmly.

"I think so," Luuka answered weakly. "Good," she replied while turning her attention back toward Ruin. "That makes this easier." Ruin's voice lowered immediately. "Move"

"No." The answer came without hesitation.

Ruin moved first. The alley exploded beneath his step as he crossed the distance between them in a blur fast enough to crack the air itself, yet before Luuka could properly follow the motion, Stèfan surged forward and drove her fist directly into Ruin's stomach with enough force to shatter the pavement beneath them both. The impact sounded like an explosion confined within the alleyway. Ruin crashed violently through the wall behind him and disappeared into the street beyond beneath an eruption of concrete, shattered metal, and debris.

Rain slowly reclaimed the silence afterward. Stèfan rolled one shoulder beneath her coat as though none of it required much effort before glancing back toward Luuka once more. "Yeah," she muttered tiredly while thunder rolled overhead beyond the skyline. "This is going to become a serious problem."
