Chapter 3 - THE DANCE THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

Grace Fletcher POV

This isn't real.

Grace is hallucinating. She's had too much champagne on an empty stomach and her brain is playing tricks on her. Oliver Kane, the man she's been invisible to for three years, is not actually holding her hand. This is not actually happening.

But his hand is warm and real and grounding her to this moment so completely that she can't deny it anymore.

He's leading her toward the dance floor.

The music is soft and slow and perfect in a way that feels impossible. Grace moves with him like her body knows what to do even though her mind is screaming that this is insane. His hand finds the small of her back and she forgets how to breathe.

They start to dance.

Oliver is close. So close that she can smell his cologne, something expensive and clean that makes her think of everything she can't have. His other hand holds hers and his eyes are looking at her like she's not his assistant. Like she's not invisible.

Like she's the only real thing in this entire room.

Grace doesn't know what to do with her face. She doesn't know how to exist in this moment without breaking it. Words would ruin this. Any sound she makes might shatter whatever spell they're under. So she stays quiet and lets the music carry them.

Around them, people are watching. She can feel the stares. She can sense Victoria somewhere, her sharp eyes following them like a predator tracking prey. But Oliver doesn't seem to notice. He's only looking at Grace.

"Hi," he says quietly, like they haven't seen each other every single day for three years. Like this is the first time he's actually introducing himself to her.

"Hi," Grace whispers back.

His thumb moves against the back of her hand. Once. Twice. A small gesture that means everything. Her heart is pounding so hard she's worried he can feel it.

They keep dancing. The song changes to another slow song. Then another. Grace loses track of time. She loses track of everything except Oliver and the way he's holding her like she matters. Like she's not just the girl who manages his calendar and reminds him about meetings.

For three years she's stood next to him, loved him quietly, watched him with other women, and accepted that she would never be more than his assistant. For three years she's been invisible.

Tonight he sees her.

The dance finally ends but Oliver doesn't let go of her hand. He pulls her gently off the dance floor toward the edge of the ballroom, away from the crowds. His grip is firm. Determined. Like he's afraid she'll disappear if he lets go.

"Come with me," he says.

It's not a question.

Grace should say no. She should walk away. She should protect herself from whatever this is. She knows better than to get involved with her boss. She knows the disaster waiting at the end of this road.

But three years of being invisible have made her brave in a way she didn't expect.

"Where?" she asks.

"My penthouse." His eyes are intense and serious and full of something she's never seen directed at her before. Want. Real want. "Just for a while. Just to talk."

They both know he doesn't mean just to talk.

Grace's instinct is to run. Her instinct is to protect her heart, which has already been his for longer than she's willing to admit. Her instinct is to remember that this man has never looked at her twice until tonight and there must be a reason for that. There must be something dangerous about Oliver Kane that she's overlooked all this time.

But standing in front of him with his hand in hers and his eyes looking at her like she's real, Grace can't find her instinct.

She finds her voice instead.

"Okay," she says.

Oliver's entire face changes. Relief floods through his expression like she just saved him from drowning. He pulls her toward the exit and Grace doesn't resist. She's making a choice right now that will destroy everything. Her job. Her reputation. Her safety. She knows this.

She says yes anyway.

They're almost to the door when someone grabs Oliver's arm.

Victoria Ashton stands there with a smile that doesn't reach her eyes. Her hand is possessive on his arm and her gaze is cold when it flicks to Grace.

"Oliver, darling, where are you going?" Victoria's voice is sweet but sharp like broken glass. "The evening is just getting started and there are so many important people who haven't had a chance to meet you yet."

Grace tries to pull her hand away but Oliver tightens his grip.

"I have somewhere to be," Oliver says and his voice is final. Cold. The CEO voice but colder than Grace has ever heard it.

"With your assistant?" Victoria laughs but it's not a real laugh. It's the kind of laugh that cuts. "How unexpected. I'm sure the board would find that very interesting."

Something in Oliver's jaw tightens. "What I do in my personal time is my business."

"Of course it is." Victoria's eyes are already moving, already calculating. Grace can see her brain working, already turning this moment into a story. Already planning how to use this against both of them. "I'm sure it will stay that way."

But they both know she's lying.

Oliver pulls Grace toward the exit without responding. They're moving faster now. His grip on her hand feels like an anchor. They pass Isabelle and Grace sees her friend's eyes go wide with shock and worry. She wants to stop and explain. She wants to tell Isabelle that she's making a terrible mistake.

But she doesn't stop.

They get into Oliver's car and he drives fast through the London streets. His hand reaches over and finds hers in the darkness. Neither of them speaks. The silence is full of electricity and anticipation and the knowledge that everything is about to change.

The penthouse rises above the city like a kingdom. Oliver pulls her into the elevator and when the doors close, he turns to face her. His hand comes up to cup her cheek and he's looking at her like she's about to disappear.

"I'm sorry I didn't see you before," he says quietly. "For three years I didn't see you and that's the biggest mistake I've ever made."

Grace's heart is breaking and healing at the same time.

"You see me now," she whispers.

The elevator rises higher and higher toward his penthouse. Higher toward a night that will change everything. Higher toward a choice that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

And as the elevator doors open to reveal the dark glittering city spread out below them, Grace understands that she's about to step into something that will destroy her.

But stepping back is no longer an option.

Oliver's hand finds hers in the darkness and pulls her deeper into his world.

There's no turning back now.
