Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 — Rebirth

Consciousness returned slowly, like something being forced back into place. Ethan's eyes opened to a blur of light and shadow. For a moment, he didn't move. His body felt unfamiliar, as if it didn't belong to him. Air filled his lungs in a sharp inhale, and the sensation alone was enough to make him tense. He was breathing. That realization came first. The second was even more jarring. There was no pain.

Ethan pushed himself up from the ground, his movements cautious at first, as though he expected his body to fail him at any moment. But it didn't. His arms held steady. His chest—where the blade had pierced him—was intact. No wound. No blood. Only smooth, unbroken skin beneath his fingers. His expression tightened. That should have been impossible.

He looked around, forcing himself to stay calm. The environment came into focus quickly—a narrow forest path, scattered stones, and tall trees casting long shadows under the afternoon sun. The air was still, carrying only the faint sound of leaves shifting in the wind. He knew this place. Not vaguely, not uncertainly. Exactly. "This is…" His voice trailed off as memory aligned with reality. "The outer forest."

The realization hit harder than the pain ever could. This was where everything had started. Before the dungeon. Before the team. Before the betrayal. Ethan slowly stood to his full height, scanning the area again with sharper focus. Nothing was out of place. Every detail matched his memory perfectly, down to the broken branch lying a few steps ahead on the path.

He wasn't hallucinating. He wasn't dreaming. He had returned. The conclusion formed quickly, and once it did, it refused to leave. Rewind. Reset. Second chance. Ethan's jaw tightened slightly as he exhaled, forcing the surge of emotion back under control. Panic wouldn't help. Confusion wouldn't change anything. Whatever had happened, he needed to understand it—and fast. Because if this truly was the past, then everything that came next… he already knew.

The forest would not stay quiet for long. A low rustling sound echoed somewhere deeper between the trees. Right on time. Ethan didn't move immediately. Instead, he focused on his breathing, slowing it down, stabilizing himself. His body felt lighter than he remembered, less conditioned, less refined. This was his earlier self—before any real combat experience, before any meaningful growth. Weaker. But not unprepared. Not this time.

Just as he took a step forward, a sharp mechanical tone suddenly cut through the air. It didn't come from the forest. It came from inside his head. [System Initializing…]

Ethan froze. The voice was clear, emotionless, and completely detached from the world around him. His gaze sharpened instantly. "…So it wasn't just the reset." The darkness after his death flashed briefly in his mind—the void, the pulse, the voice. It hadn't been an illusion.

[Host detected]

[Binding process complete]

A translucent blue interface appeared in front of him without warning. It hovered at eye level, perfectly stable, as if anchored to his vision itself. Ethan didn't flinch this time. He studied it.

Name: Ethan ColeLevel: 1

Strength: 5Agility: 5Vitality: 5

Abilities: None

The information was simple, almost minimal. But the implications were not.

"A system…" Ethan muttered under his breath. He had heard of similar concepts before—ancient artifacts, forbidden techniques, rare abilities tied to unknown origins—but those had always been distant rumors, things that belonged to legends or powerful figures far beyond his reach. Now it was directly in front of him. More importantly— It was his.

Another line appeared on the interface.

[Core Function: Evolution][All attributes, abilities, and biological traits can be upgraded]

Ethan's eyes narrowed slightly. "…Everything?" The wording was deliberate. Not skills. Not stats. Everything. That included his physical limits, reaction speed, possibly even things beyond normal human boundaries. If the system functioned exactly as stated, then it wasn't just an advantage. It was absolute control over growth. A shortcut that bypassed the natural limits of this world.

Ethan exhaled slowly, processing the information with forced calm. Excitement was there, but he didn't let it take over. Power meant nothing if it couldn't be used correctly. And right now, he needed confirmation.

A sound broke through the stillness again. Closer this time. The bushes ahead shifted slightly, leaves brushing against each other as something moved behind them. A low growl followed, barely audible but unmistakable. Ethan's gaze lifted. "I remember you."

A Shadow Wolf stepped out from the undergrowth, its dark fur blending almost perfectly with the surrounding shadows. Its eyes locked onto him instantly, sharp and predatory. In his previous life, this encounter had nearly ended him. He had hesitated. Panicked. Made the wrong decision. This time, he didn't move back. He stepped forward.

The wolf reacted immediately, lowering its body before launching itself toward him in a sudden burst of speed. Its fangs were aimed directly at his throat, precise and lethal. Ethan shifted to the side. The movement was not fast. But it was controlled. Enough. The wolf passed him by inches. Before it could recover, Ethan drove his fist into its flank with a sharp, direct strike. The impact forced the creature off balance, its body slamming into the ground with a heavy thud.

It tried to rise again. Ethan didn't give it the chance. He stepped in and struck again, this time aiming for the neck. The second hit was cleaner, more decisive. The wolf's movement stopped almost instantly. Silence returned.

Ethan stood still for a moment, watching the body carefully. No movement. Confirmed kill. Then the system reacted.

[Kill confirmed][Energy absorbed][Evolution points acquired]

Ethan's focus sharpened immediately. "…Points?" The interface shifted.

Available Evolution Options:

Strength +2 Agility +2 Enhanced Vision

The choices were simple, but the meaning behind them was not. Direct improvement. Immediate effect. No delay. Ethan didn't hesitate long. "Agility."

The response was instant.

[Selection confirmed]

A surge of energy moved through his body, not violent, but precise. It flowed through his muscles, adjusting, refining, sharpening. His balance shifted subtly. His reaction speed increased. Even the way he stood felt different. More efficient. More controlled.

Ethan flexed his fingers slightly, testing the change. The difference was clear. "This is real."

Not theory. Not assumption. A working system.

His gaze lifted toward the deeper parts of the forest. That was where the real danger began. And the real opportunities. If everything functioned like this, then every fight would make him stronger. Every kill would push him forward. There would be no wasted effort, no meaningless struggle. Only progression. Only growth.

Ethan took a step forward, his movements noticeably lighter than before. "Then I won't waste time."

His voice was calm, steady, and completely certain. Because this time, he wasn't walking into the future blindly. He already knew where the path led.

Cliffhanger

A sudden notification interrupted his thoughts.

[Warning]

Ethan stopped. A new line appeared on the interface.

[High-level lifeform detected nearby]

His eyes narrowed instantly. Because he remembered that too. And last time— He didn't survive it.
