Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Unexpected Dinner

I stood in my new room, staring at the huge wardrobe filled with designer clothes. My father, Richard, had spared no expense in making me feel welcome. But despite the luxury, I couldn't shake off the feeling of being an outsider.

Vivian, my stepmom, had made it clear she wasn't happy about my presence. And my stepsisters, Sophia and Olivia, seemed to be following her lead. They'd barely spoken to me since I arrived, and when they did, it was with a healthy dose of disdain.

But Richard was different. He was doing everything to make me feel at home. He'd taken me on a tour of the mansion, introduced me to the staff, and even offered to get me anything I needed.

I was sitting on the bed, trying to process it all, when there was a knock at the door.

"Avery?" It was Sophia, her voice filled with annoyance.

I opened the door, " Dad said I should tell you that dinner is at eight."

She said and walked away quickly like I was some virus.

I looked at the clock, and my eyes widened. It was already 7:30! I had only 30 minutes to get ready.

I rushed to the wardrobe, scanning the clothes. What was I going to wear?

I finally settled on a simple black dress. It was elegant, but not too flashy. I paired it with some heels and did my hair.

As I walked downstairs, I felt a mix of nerves and excitement. This was my new life now, and I was determined to make the best of it.

But as I entered the dining room, I felt a jolt. Vivian and my stepsisters were dressed to the nines, and they were all looking at me like I was something they'd stepped on.

Richard, however, smiled and stood up. "Avery, you look beautiful."

I smiled, feeling a little more at ease. Maybe this was going to be okay after all.

But as I sat down, Vivian spoke up, her voice dripping with venom. "So, Avery, tell us...what makes you think you're worthy of being part of this family?"

The room fell silent. I felt like I'd been punched. What was I going to say?

I looked at Richard, hoping he'd jump in and save me, but he just gave me a reassuring smile. I took a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts.

"I don't know what makes me worthy," I said, my voice steady. "But I know I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere." I looked at Vivian, my eyes locking with hers. "I'm your husband's daughter, and I'm going to make the best of it."

Sophia and Olivia exchanged a look, their eyes narrowing. But Vivian, she just smiled, like she'd expected me to put up a fight.

"Well, isn't that just peachy," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "We'll see how long that lasts."

The tension in the dining room was obvious. Vivian's words still hung in the air, challenging me to respond. But before I could say anything, Richard intervened.

"Enough, Vivian," he said, his voice firm but calm. "Avery is my daughter, and she's a part of this family. I won't have anyone making her feel unwelcome."

Vivian's face fell, but she said nothing else. Richard's eyes narrowed as he looked at her and my stepsisters.

"You all need to understand something," he said, his voice serious. "Avery is not some outsider. She's my first daughter, and she has as much right to be here as any of you. I won't tolerate any bullying or mistreatment of her."

Sophia and Olivia looked at each other, their faces filled with resentment. But they knew better than to defy their father. Vivian, on the other hand, was seething with anger.

Richard's expression softened as he turned to me. "Avery, I'm sorry you had to witness that. I assure you, it's not going to happen again."

I smiled, feeling a mix of relief and gratitude. "It's okay, Dad. I appreciate your support."

Dad. It felt weird calling him that, but it also felt right, and I could see excitement on his face after I called him dad.

As the dinner ended, I felt a sense of unease. Vivian's eyes seemed to be burning with a fire, and I knew she wasn't going to let me get away with anything.

As I headed back to my room, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was walking into a trap. What was Vivian's real game?
