Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Truth She Refuses to Tell

The silence didn't feel empty.

It felt controlled.

Like every word that hadn't been said was sitting between us, waiting for the wrong move.

I didn't look away from her.

I couldn't.

Because the more I looked, the clearer it became.

She wasn't avoiding me.

She was holding something back.

Deliberately.

"You're not telling me everything," I said.

My voice was steady now.

Not emotional.

Focused.

Her expression didn't change.

"I've told you enough."

That answer came too fast.

Too prepared.

"No," I replied.

I took a step closer.

"You told me what you wanted me to hear."

A pause.

Her gaze sharpened slightly.

"That's the same thing."

"It's not."

The words came out sharper than I intended.

Because now I could see it clearly.

This wasn't confusion anymore.

This was control.

She wasn't lost.

She wasn't trapped.

She was choosing what to reveal.

And what to hide.

"You said leaving isn't simple," I continued.

My eyes didn't leave hers.

"What does that actually mean?"

Silence.

Too long.

Too deliberate.

That wasn't hesitation.

That was calculation.

"It means exactly what it sounds like," she said.

That answer didn't land.

Because it wasn't real.

It was deflection.

My jaw tightened.

"Stop doing that."

Her brows pulled together slightly.

"Doing what?"

"Avoiding the question."

"I answered it."

"No, you didn't."

The tension shifted.

Not explosive.

But sharp.

Like something was about to break.

"Why are you pushing this?" she asked.

That question caught me off guard.

Because it sounded like I was the problem.

"You disappeared," I said.

My voice dropped again.

More controlled now.

More dangerous.

"You left me with nothing. No explanation. No warning."

A step closer.

"And now you're standing here telling me I shouldn't ask questions?"

Her expression changed.

Slightly.

Not softer.

But more… conflicted.

"You don't understand what this is," she said.

There it was again.

That same line.

That same distance.

"That's because you won't explain it," I replied.

Silence.

Then—

"You wouldn't believe me if I did."

That stopped me.

Not because of what she said.

But because of how she said it.

There was something real in her voice now.

Something beneath the control.

"Try me," I said.

A challenge.

A risk.

Because if she refused again—

Then I would know.

This wasn't about protecting me.

This was about hiding something.

Her gaze held mine.

For a moment—

I thought she might actually say it.

That she might finally tell me the truth.

But then—

She looked away.

And that was the answer.

My chest tightened.

"You can't even say it," I said quietly.

"That's not the same thing as not knowing."

Her jaw tightened.

"That's not fair."

"Neither is this," I replied.

The words came faster now.

More direct.

More certain.

"You're asking me to trust you, but you won't give me anything real."

"I'm trying to protect you."

There it was.

The excuse.

The one people always used when they didn't want to explain.

"From what?" I asked immediately.

No hesitation.

No pause.

Silence.

Again.

That same silence.

That same refusal.

And this time—

It confirmed everything.

"You don't trust me," I said.

The words came out calmer than I expected.

Because now—

I understood.

This wasn't about protection.

This was about control.

Her gaze snapped back to mine.

"That's not true."

"Then prove it."

A step closer.

"Tell me what's really going on."

Her breathing shifted.

Just slightly.

Barely noticeable.

But I saw it.

And for the first time—

I realized something.

She wasn't just hiding the truth.

She was afraid of it.

That changed everything.

Because fear meant something real.

Something dangerous.

"You need to leave," she said.

The words came out faster now.

Less controlled.

More urgent.

That was new.

"No."

The answer came instantly.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Both of them looked at me.

Her—

Surprised.

Him—

Interested.

"I'm not leaving," I continued.

My voice didn't shake.

Didn't drop.

"I didn't come this far just to walk away because you won't talk."

"That's not what this is," she said.

"Then what is it?"

Silence.

Again.

But this time—

It wasn't just avoidance.

It was fear.

Real fear.

And that—

That was the moment everything shifted.

Because now I knew.

There was something bigger here.

Something she couldn't say.

Something she didn't want me to see.

And that made one thing clear.

I was already too deep.

Because instead of stepping back—

Instead of walking away—

I leaned forward.

Into the truth she refused to give me.

And that was the moment I stopped waiting for answers—

And started deciding to find them myself.
