Chapter 1 - 001: The Night She Broke

Music filled the hall, soft and expensive, the kind that made people feel important even when they weren't.

Eva Vale stood near the edge of the ballroom, fingers lightly gripping the stem of a glass she hadn't touched. The lights above shimmered like stars, reflecting off polished marble floors and designer dresses. Laughter echoed. Glasses clinked. Conversations flowed like money.

She didn't belong here.

Not really.

Her dress was simple. Elegant, yes, but not enough to compete with the women gliding across the room like they owned the air itself. Her heels were slightly worn. Her confidence even more so.

Still, her eyes searched.

Only for him.

Kael Dorian.

He stood at the center of it all, like the world had been built around him. Tall, composed, untouchable. People gravitated toward him without trying. Power clung to him like a second skin.

Eva swallowed.

This was a mistake.

She knew it the moment she stepped into this place. But she had come anyway. Because tonight mattered. Tonight, she needed him.

Not tomorrow. Not someday.

Now.

Her fingers tightened around the glass as she watched a woman lean closer to him, laughing softly at something he said. The woman was beautiful in a way that felt effortless. Perfect hair. Perfect smile. The kind of woman who never had to wonder if she was enough.

Eva looked away.

Her chest felt tight, but she forced herself to breathe.

You didn't come here to compare. You came here to ask.

She placed the glass down and started walking.

Each step felt heavier than the last, like the floor was trying to pull her back, warning her not to go further. But she kept moving. Past strangers. Past whispers. Past the feeling of being watched.

Until she stood in front of him.

Up close, he was even colder.

His eyes flicked to her, and for a moment, there was recognition.

Then it faded.

"Eva," he said, her name sounding unfamiliar on his lips. "You're here."

Not I'm glad to see you.

Not you look beautiful.

Just that.

She forced a small smile. "Hi."

The woman beside him glanced at her, then back at him. Curious. Slightly amused.

Eva ignored her.

"I need to talk to you," Eva said, her voice quieter than she intended. "Alone."

Kael studied her for a second. His gaze dropped, taking in her dress, her tired eyes, the tension she couldn't hide.

Something unreadable crossed his face.

Then he turned to the woman. "Give us a moment."

The woman smiled like she had already won something and stepped away.

Eva's heart pounded.

This was it.

"Kael," she began, her fingers curling into her palm. "I wouldn't be here if it wasn't important."

He didn't respond.

Just watched her.

Waiting.

The silence stretched.

"I need your help," she said finally. The words felt heavier than they should. Like they carried pieces of her pride with them. "Just this once."

His expression didn't change.

"Help with what."

Straight to the point. No warmth. No concern.

Eva swallowed. "I'm in trouble. I tried handling it on my own but it's not working. I just need a little time. Or support. Anything. I wouldn't ask if I had another choice."

For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes.

Then it was gone.

"I can't help you."

The words landed quietly.

But they hit like a blow.

Eva blinked. "What?"

"I said I can't help you."

No hesitation.

No explanation.

Just a decision already made.

Her chest tightened. "You didn't even ask what it is."

"I don't need to."

That hurt more than it should have.

Her voice dropped. "Kael… please."

She hated that word.

Hated how small it made her feel.

Hated how easily it came out anyway.

For a moment, the world around them seemed to fade. The music. The voices. Everything blurred until it was just the two of them standing there.

He looked at her.

Really looked this time.

And still…

Nothing softened.

"You should leave," he said.

Eva froze.

"What?"

"You don't belong here."

The words were calm. Controlled.

But they cut deeper than anything else he had said.

Her throat tightened. "I didn't come here to belong. I came here because I trusted you."

Silence.

Then a faint sound of heels approaching.

Eva didn't need to turn to know who it was.

The woman.

She stepped back into place beside him, her presence effortless, like she had always been meant to stand there.

Eva's eyes flicked between them.

And something inside her cracked.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Kael didn't move away.

Didn't correct the distance.

Didn't say anything.

That was her answer.

Eva let out a small breath. It almost sounded like a laugh.

"I see," she whispered.

Her grip loosened at her side. The last bit of hope she carried slipping quietly through her fingers.

She stepped back.

One step.

Then another.

No one stopped her.

No one noticed.

Or maybe they did.

Maybe they just didn't care.

By the time she reached the exit, her vision was blurred, but no tears fell. She refused to cry here. Not in front of them. Not for him.

The cold night air hit her the moment she stepped outside.

Sharp. Real.

It felt better than the suffocating warmth inside.

Eva stood there for a moment, staring at nothing.

Then slowly, she reached into her bag.

Her phone.

The screen lit up, illuminating her face.

Missed calls.

Unknown numbers.

A message blinked at the top.

She opened it.

Unknown Sender:

Are you ready to accept the offer?

Eva stared at the words.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

Another message came in.

This will be your last chance.

She looked back at the entrance of the building.

At the world she was just pushed out of.

At the man who had just chosen someone else without a second thought.

Something in her eyes changed.

Not sadness.

Not anymore.

Something colder.

Something sharper.

She looked back at the screen.

And typed.

I accept.

For a second, nothing happened.

Then the phone vibrated.

System initializing.

Eva's breath caught.

A strange stillness settled around her, like the world itself was holding its breath.

Then the final message appeared.

Welcome, Eva Vale.

Everything you were… will be taken.

Everything you will become… will have a price.

Eva stared at the screen.

Then slowly…

She smiled.

And somewhere deep inside her, something began to break.

Or awaken.
