Seraphina's pov
I was still sitting inside that damned cell when I suddenly felt a presence, heavy enough to make the hairs at the back of my neck rise instantly.
Slowly, I lifted my eyes toward the corridor, expecting a guard, Elena or another reminder that Nicholas Vault owned every inch of this fortress.
A tall figure stood in front of the bars beneath the dim corridor light. At first glance, he looked like one of Nicholas's guards, dressed in the same dark uniform with black gloves covering his hands. A cap sat low over his face, hiding most of his features beneath its shadow.
"Have you finally come to release me?" I hissed tiredly as I stood from the floor, brushing dust from my dress.
"Because if you have, then do it already. And if not, leave."
But the figure didn't move. He simply stood there watching me in silence, and something about that silence began to crawl beneath my skin.
My irritation slowly faded into unease. Then my eyes accidentally locked with his.
