Chapter 27 - Chapter 26: “Truth or Dare: Heart Edition”

Saturday night, and the living room was dimly lit with just a few lamps casting warm light across the floor. Ethan sat cross-legged on the rug, grinning mischievously.

"Okay, Lara," he said, holding a deck of cards. "Since movie night was fun… I thought we could play a game. Truth or Dare?"

I raised an eyebrow, suspicious. "Truth or Dare? At this hour? With you?"

"Yes," he said simply, leaning back on his hands, eyes glinting. "I promise… it'll be fun. Maybe a little dangerous too."

I hesitated, but curiosity got the better of me. "Fine… but only if we keep it… sane," I warned, though my heart was already racing.

"Agreed," he said, smirking. He drew the first card and handed it to me. "Truth or Dare?"

I bit my lip. "Truth," I said cautiously.

"Hmm…" he said, leaning closer. "Have you… ever thought about… us? Like… in a… romantic way?" His voice was low, teasing, but I could feel the intensity behind it.

My cheeks burned, and I turned away slightly. "I… maybe… sometimes," I admitted softly, my hands fidgeting. "I try not to, but… I can't help it."

His grin widened, eyes sparkling. "Good answer. Now my turn." He picked up a card. "Dare. Ethan, I dare you to… sit closer to me."

I nearly choked. "Closer?!" I stammered, but before I could protest, he scooted just a little closer on the rug, the warmth of his leg brushing mine. My heart hammered.

"You're not serious," I whispered, flustered, trying to pretend it didn't affect me.

"Deadly serious," he murmured, voice low. "Your turn, truth or dare?"

I hesitated, then swallowed nervously. "Dare."

He smirked, leaning in slightly. "I dare you… to admit something you've been feeling about me… honestly."

I froze, my heart racing, face hot. "E-Ethan…" I whispered. "I… I like you. More than I should. I think about you… all the time. Even when I try not to."

His eyes softened, and he reached out to gently brush a strand of hair from my face. "I like you too, Lara. More than I should. Every time we're together… I can't stop thinking about you."

The tension between us was thick, electric. Truths laid bare, hearts exposed, yet still careful of boundaries.

He leaned a fraction closer, enough for me to feel the warmth of his breath. "Careful," he whispered, teasing, "one more move and I might just… kiss you."

I swallowed, my pulse racing. "Ethan…" I whispered, knowing I wanted him to.

Contract marriage. Rules. Boundaries. But tonight, under dim lights, playing a game of truth or dare, none of that seemed to matter.

Because our hearts were speaking louder than the rules ever could.
