Chapter 45 - Chapter 44: “Tested Together”

Tuesday afternoon. The city's usual buzz felt heavier today. Ethan and I were both at our respective workspaces, but an urgent message had pulled us into a shared crisis. My dad's health had taken a sudden turn, and simultaneously, Ethan's company was in the middle of a critical deal that required his immediate attention.

"I can't believe this is happening… all at once," I muttered, pacing the living room.

Ethan appeared in the doorway, phone pressed to his ear, eyes focused but softening the moment he saw me. "Lara… hey. We'll handle this. Together."

I froze, staring at him. "Together? Ethan, you have your work, I have my dad… how can we handle all of this together?"

He hung up, finally giving me his full attention. "Because… we're a team. We've faced fights, doubts, fears… and we survived. This… this is just another challenge. And we'll get through it side by side."

I exhaled slowly, trying to calm the panic in my chest. "Okay… okay. You're right. We… we'll figure this out."

For the next few hours, we split tasks seamlessly. I coordinated with the doctors, updating Ethan on my dad's condition, while he juggled calls and meetings from his phone, his fingers tapping expertly on the screen. Every so often, he'd glance at me, a reassuring smile reminding me I wasn't alone.

"I know this is crazy," I whispered during a short break, my hand brushing against his. "But… having you here makes it… easier."

He nodded, squeezing my hand. "I've got you. Always. No matter how crazy it gets."

By evening, the doctor confirmed my dad's condition was stabilizing. Relief washed over me, and I felt my shoulders finally relax. Ethan pulled me into a hug, letting me bury my face into his chest.

"You did amazing today," he murmured. "We did amazing. Look at us… surviving chaos, together."

I smiled, a small tear escaping my eye. "Yeah… together."

Then Ethan pulled back slightly, brushing a stray hair from my face, his eyes locking onto mine. "Lara… I know we've had so many tests lately… misunderstandings, jealousy, fear. But this… this proves we're stronger than anything life throws at us. And I… I love you more every time we fight through it."

I felt my heart swell. "I love you too, Ethan. And I… I don't want to imagine life without you. No matter how hard it gets."

He leaned down, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss to my lips. "Then we'll face everything together… and nothing can break us. Not fear, not distance, not chaos. We've got each other."

And in that moment, amid exhaustion, relief, and lingering tension, I realized something. Love wasn't just romance or stolen kisses—it was teamwork, trust, support, and choosing each other, over and over, even when life tried to pull you apart.

With Ethan by my side, I knew we could survive anything. Together.
