The dormitory was quiet when Joy returned.
Most of the sisters were already asleep, their soft breathing filling the room. The candle near the window flickered gently as Joy climbed slowly onto her bed.
But sleep refused to come.
She stared at the ceiling, her mind racing with everything she had just seen.
Christiana.
Father John.
The way Christiana had silenced him, the way he had looked at her.
Joy turned on her side, pulling the blanket closer.
So it's true, she thought.
The secret felt heavy in her chest.
For a moment, she considered going straight to Sister Maria in the morning. Sister Maria already suspected something unusual about Christiana. If Joy told her everything, the truth would come out quickly.
But another thought stopped her.
Christiana had trusted her once.
She had confessed everything.
Joy sighed quietly into the darkness.
Part of her wanted to believe Christiana's confidence was harmless. Maybe it would end before anyone found out.
Yet deep inside, another feeling was growing.
Jealousy.
Christiana walked through the convent like someone who feared nothing. She broke the rules, met John in secret, and still acted as if she controlled everything.
Joy clenched the edge of her blanket slightly.
She thinks she's untouchable.
That thought lingered in her mind for a long moment.
Then slowly, Joy's thoughts began to change.
Instead of exposing the secret now…
maybe it was better to wait.
The longer she watched, the more she would know. And when the truth finally came out, it would be far more powerful.
Joy closed her eyes slowly.
A faint, thoughtful smile touched her lips.
Let her believe she is safe, she thought quietly.
For now.
And with that decision resting in her mind, Joy finally allowed sleep to take her.
Morning arrived quietly at the convent.
The bell rang loudly through the halls, calling the sisters to the early morning prayer. One by one they rose from their beds and prepared for the day.
Christiana woke feeling strangely uneasy.
She couldn't explain it, but something from the previous night stayed on her mind. John's fear… the way he kept saying someone might be watching them.
She sat up slowly, adjusting her veil.
Across the room, Joy was already awake.
Joy moved calmly, preparing like every other morning. Her face looked peaceful, almost innocent, as if nothing unusual had happened.
But every now and then, her eyes briefly lifted toward Christiana.
Christiana noticed.
Just for a moment.
Joy quickly looked away again.
Christiana frowned slightly.
Why is she watching me like that?
Soon the sisters walked together toward the chapel. The morning air was cool and quiet as they entered the large room filled with soft candlelight.
Everyone knelt in their usual places.
Christiana bowed her head in prayer, trying to focus.
But the strange feeling returned again.
Eyes.
Watching her.
Slowly, she lifted her head and glanced behind her.
Joy sat two rows back, her head lowered like the others.
Yet when Christiana turned away again, Joy slowly raised her eyes.
A faint smile touched her lips.
Christiana didn't see it.
But the uneasy feeling in her chest only grew stronger.
For the first time since her secret meetings began, Christiana started to wonder something she had never considered before.
Does someone know?
And somewhere inside the quiet chapel, Joy sat patiently.
Watching.
Waiting.
Because sometimes the most dangerous person…
Is the one who knows the truth and says nothing.
The rest of the morning passed slowly.
Christiana tried to focus on her chores, but the uneasy feeling from the chapel refused to leave her mind. Every time she moved through the halls, she felt as if someone's eyes followed her.
Finally, she decided to test her suspicion.
During the afternoon, while the sisters were working in the courtyard, Christiana walked toward Joy, who was quietly watering the plants near the stone wall.
"Joy," Christiana said casually.
Joy looked up and smiled gently. "Yes?"
Christiana folded her arms lightly. "You seem quiet today."
Joy shrugged. "Just thinking."
Christiana studied her carefully, searching her face for any sign of something hidden.
"About what?" Christiana asked.
Joy tilted her head slightly, as if considering the question.
"Oh… nothing important," she replied calmly. "Just wondering how easy it is for people to keep secrets."
Christiana's heart skipped for a moment.
But she forced a small laugh.
"Well, secrets don't last long in places like this," she said.
Joy nodded slowly.
"That's true," she said. "Someone always sees something eventually."
The words hung between them.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
Christiana looked away first, pretending not to care.
But inside, the doubt had grown stronger.
Meanwhile, Joy returned to watering the plants, her expression calm.
Yet deep inside, she was smiling.
Because now she knew something important
Christiana was starting to feel afraid.
And fear meant the game had truly begun.
