Chapter 22 - CHAPTER TWENTY - TWO

CHAPTER 22

Fire in the Open

The morning started like any other.

Calm.

Structured.

Controlled.

Hazel Vale walked into Black Global Empire with her usual quiet confidence, her heels clicking softly against the polished floors.

Staff greeted her.

Work awaited her.

Everything was normal.

Until it wasn't.

The whispers started first.

Low.

Sharp.

Spreading.

Hazel noticed it immediately.

Eyes lingering too long.

Conversations cutting off when she passed.

Phones being tilted away too quickly.

Her steps slowed slightly.

Something was wrong.

"Hazel…"

Mira's voice came rushing toward her.

Breathless.

Panicked.

Hazel turned. "What is it?"

Mira hesitated.

Then held out her phone.

Hazel took it.

And everything…

Shifted.

Headline:

"BLACK GLOBAL EMPIRE CEO'S SECRET AFFAIR WITH JUNIOR STAFF EXPOSED"

Below it—

Pictures.

Carefully selected.

Manipulated context.

Hazel standing close to Lucian.

Lucian touching her hand.

Moments twisted into something ugly.

Words followed.

Cruel.

Calculated.

"Sources claim Hazel Vale secured her rapid promotions through a personal relationship with CEO Lucian Black…"

"Insiders suggest she is nothing more than a mistress benefiting from favoritism…"

Hazel's grip tightened around the phone.

Not shock.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"Ivy," she said quietly.

Mira nodded. "It's everywhere."

Hazel looked up slowly.

Now she saw it clearly.

The stares.

The judgment.

The doubt.

Everything she had built—

Now being questioned.

Inside his office—

Lucian Black was already reading it.

His expression didn't change.

But the air around him did.

Cold.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

"They published it across multiple platforms," his assistant said carefully.

Lucian didn't respond immediately.

His eyes scanned every word.

Every accusation.

Every lie.

Then—

He stood.

"Prepare a company-wide announcement," he said calmly.

His assistant blinked slightly.

"Sir?"

Lucian's gaze darkened.

"It ends today."

Hazel sat in her office.

Still.

For the first time in a long time…

The noise reached her.

Not because she believed it.

But because the world did.

A knock came.

She didn't answer.

The door opened anyway.

Lucian.

Their eyes met.

Silence.

Heavy.

Not with doubt.

But with everything unspoken.

"You saw it," he said.

Hazel nodded slowly.

A pause.

"Do you believe it will affect your work?" he asked.

That question wasn't cold.

It was careful.

Hazel met his gaze fully now.

"No," she said firmly.

Another pause.

"Do you?" she asked quietly.

Lucian stepped closer.

"Not for a second."

Something in her chest eased.

Because that—

That mattered more than the headlines.

"But it will affect the company," he continued.

Hazel nodded.

"I know."

Silence settled again.

Then—

Lucian spoke.

"I'm going to fix it."

Hazel frowned slightly.

"How?"

His eyes locked onto hers.

"By telling the truth."

Within the hour—

Every employee received a notification.

MANDATORY COMPANY ADDRESS

The main hall filled quickly.

Tension thick.

Curiosity sharp.

Hazel stood near the front.

Mira beside her.

Whispers everywhere.

Then—

Lucian walked in.

Silence fell instantly.

He didn't rush.

Didn't hesitate.

He stepped onto the platform—

Commanding the room without effort.

His gaze swept across the crowd.

Cold. Controlled.

Then—

He began.

"I'm aware of the rumors circulating this morning."

No denial.

No avoidance.

Just truth.

"They question the integrity of this company…"

A pause.

"…and the character of one of my most valuable executives."

All eyes turned to Hazel.

Her heart pounded.

But she didn't look away.

Lucian continued.

"Let me make one thing very clear."

The room held its breath.

"Hazel Vale did not earn her position through favoritism."

His voice sharpened slightly.

"She earned it through competence, discipline, and results that surpass most in this building."

Murmurs shifted.

But he wasn't done.

"And as for the nature of our relationship…"

Silence.

Complete.

Hazel's breath caught.

Lucian looked directly at her.

Not at the crowd.

Not at the board.

At her.

Then—

He said it.

"I am in a relationship with Hazel Vale."

The room exploded.

Gasps.

Whispers.

Shock.

But Lucian didn't flinch.

"This relationship did not influence her hiring."

A step forward.

"It did not influence her promotions."

Another step.

"And it will not influence her authority within this company."

His gaze hardened.

"Anyone who questions her capability is free to prove they can outperform her."

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Final.

Because no one could.

Lucian stepped down.

Walked straight toward Hazel.

And stopped in front of her.

No hesitation.

No distance.

He reached for her hand.

In front of everyone.

Held it.

Firm.

Certain.

"You're not facing this alone," he said quietly.

Hazel's eyes softened slightly.

"I know," she replied.

And in that moment—

The narrative shifted.

Not scandal.

Not shame.

But power.

Because they didn't hide.

They stood.

Together.

Across the city—

Ivy stared at her screen.

Watching the announcement replay.

Her jaw tightened.

"That wasn't supposed to happen…"

Because she didn't plan for this.

She planned to break Hazel.

Not make her…

Stronger.

Her nails dug into her palm.

"Fine," she whispered.

"If exposure doesn't destroy you…"

Her eyes darkened.

"I'll find something that will."

Back at the company—

The storm hadn't ended.

But Hazel stood in the center of it.

Not shaken.

Not broken.

But proven.

And beside her—

Lucian Black.

Not hiding her.

But choosing her.

Publicly.

Irrevocably.
