Chapter 1: Dust and Dreams

The last step of the Chandigarh bus and the old suitcase gripped tightly in Anurag's hands—both seemed to be witnessing the beginning of a new world. As he stepped off the bus, the city's cool breeze welcomed him, but that air didn't carry the scent of his own people. There were only towering concrete buildings and the roar of speeding vehicles.

Anurag wiped the sweat from his forehead with the sleeve of his kurta. There was a strange innocence on his face, the same innocence that had been nurtured in the sand dunes and fields of Hanumangarh. There was a spark in his eyes—the dream of upholding the pride of his father's turban and the blessing of his mother's prayers.

"So this is the city... Chandigarh," he whispered softly.

The College Gate...

When he reached the gate of that prestigious city college, he felt as if he was standing before a palace. Massive trees, grand buildings, and boys and girls walking around who looked like characters from a movie. Anurag pressed his old diary, which had 'Zanjeer' written on it, even tighter against his chest. He didn't know that this diary would one day change his fate and the very essence of this city.

Just then, the sharp sound of screeching tires echoed. A gleaming car pulled up right next to him. A cloud of dust rose and settled on Anurag's clean clothes.

The car door opened, and out stepped—Jasmeet.

Expensive sunglasses, an iPhone in hand, and that arrogance on her face that only a birth into wealth can bring. She looked at Anurag from head to toe as if he wasn't a human being, but a stone lying in the middle of the road.

"Oh my God! What is this 'Pindu-like' appearance? Is this a college or some grain market?" There was venom in Jasmeet's voice. Her friends standing behind her burst into laughter.

Anurag's face turned red. Gathering courage, he said, "Ji, I have come here to study... I have been admitted."

"To study?" Jasmeet came closer and snatched the old diary from his hand. "You'll study from this torn diary? This belongs in the trash."

Saying this, she threw the diary far onto the road. Tears welled up in Anurag's eyes. That diary wasn't just a piece of paper; it contained the record of his father's blood and sweat, and the poems he had written himself.

Sitting back in her car, Jasmeet said, "Listen, boy, if you want to survive in this city, mind your status before you step. 'Standard' rules here, not your simplicity."

The car sped away, and Anurag remained standing there. The dust had settled not just on his clothes, but on his dreams as well. He bent down, picked up his diary, cleaned it, and took a deep breath.

The Chandigarh sun was very harsh that day, but the fire burning inside Anurag was even harsher. He didn't know that the 'Zanjeer' (chain) he held close to his chest today would one day become a noose around this city's neck.
