Chapter 1 - Ways of Life: Family, Friends & Betrayal

Chapter 1: New Beginnings

Maya had always loved the quiet hum of early mornings in her neighborhood. The sun would peek through the curtains of her small, sunlit room, casting a soft glow across the walls decorated with photos of family vacations and snapshots of her with friends. Today was different, though. Today marked the start of her final year in high school, a year she had imagined as the beginning of something bigger—dreams of college, adventures, and a future that felt both exciting and terrifying.

Her older sister, Sofia, was already in the kitchen, humming softly as she prepared breakfast. Maya could hear the clatter of dishes, the hiss of the kettle, and the faint pop of the toaster. Despite their occasional disagreements, she felt comforted knowing Sofia was nearby. Theirs was a bond forged in childhood games, whispered secrets, and late-night talks, but it was also tinged with rivalry that neither could fully escape.

"Maya, hurry up! You're going to be late for your first day," Sofia called, her voice carrying a mix of irritation and care. Maya rolled her eyes but smiled. Their mother, bustling around with her usual cheerful energy, added, "Breakfast isn't just about eating—it's about starting the day right! Don't forget, family first."

After a quick breakfast, Maya stepped outside, the crisp morning air filling her lungs. She spotted Liam waiting near the corner, his backpack slung casually over one shoulder. He had been her best friend since they were little, their friendship unshakable—or so she had thought. Liam waved, and Maya waved back, feeling that familiar flutter of comfort and companionship.

"Ready for the first day of senior year?" Liam asked, a playful smirk on his face. Maya nodded. "As ready as I'll ever be. It feels… different this year, doesn't it?" Liam shrugged. "Different can be good. Keeps life interesting."

As they walked together to school, Maya noticed a new face—a boy a little older than her, standing by the school gate with an air of quiet confidence. His dark hair fell slightly over his eyes, and there was something mysterious about him. Ethan. That was the name Liam whispered under his breath. Maya couldn't shake the feeling that he was going to change things, though she couldn't yet imagine how.
