Chapter 46 - Humiliation

Varys, surrounded by intrigue and deception, had long been wary of the Mysterious Man's cunning. Yet, the Mysterious Man's act of saving Shireen today revealed a kindness in his heart, which earned him a sliver of Varys's approval. With such a person assisting Queen Daenerys, the Seven Kingdoms would move one step closer to fulfilling Varys's ambitions.

Zhuogeng had feared that Varys might misunderstand his motives for saving Shireen, perhaps even sabotaging the effort. By explaining his reasoning, he unexpectedly gained Varys's support—a welcome surprise.

Standing before the stone table, Varys pondered for a moment before devising a plan to shelter Shireen. He returned to his room to write down his strategy and left it on the table before retreating.

Seeing Varys enter his chamber, Zhuogeng swooped down from the great tree, snatched the parchment, and flew to the rooftop. As he read Varys's plan, his brow furrowed—or rather, the ridge above his eyes.

The method for receiving Shireen on Dragonstone seemed feasible, but Zhuogeng disagreed with the plan to send her to Pentos. Varys intended to contact a merchant ship after Shireen arrived, have her hide in a wooden crate disguised as cargo, and arrange for someone to escort her to her new refuge upon reaching Pentos.

Zhuogeng could vividly imagine Shireen's heartbroken departure from Dragonstone, her confinement in a dark, lonely box as she crossed the Narrow Sea, and her arrival in an entirely unfamiliar place.

This was no ordeal for a ten-year-old girl.

Varys knew this arrangement would be unfair to Shireen, but it was the safest course of action. Given her special status, she was easily exposed.

Zhuogeng still rejected Varys's plan, instructing him only to ensure Shireen's safe extraction from Dragonstone.

After careful consideration, Zhuogeng wrote a reply and left it on the desk.

Estimating the time, Varys pushed open the door and stepped out. As expected, he found the message on the desk. He was now certain the mysterious sender must be a warg, one who could even manipulate a remarkably clever little bird—otherwise, such fluid communication would be impossible.

Upon reading the note, Varys hesitated for a moment before composing his reply.

After receiving the response, Zhuogeng returned to Dragonstone and informed Shireen of the agreed-upon time and location.

Knowing she would soon leave Dragonstone, Shireen felt a pang of sorrow. This was the only home she had ever known, yet she understood she had no choice but to go. A few days prior, her father had visited, and she had sensed he was no longer the man she once knew.

After finishing his letter to Shireen, Zhuogeng didn't rush to leave. The next day was the wedding of the "little monster" Joffrey, and he wanted to personally witness this bloody historical moment.

Seeing Zhuogeng pull out another pile of snacks from his backpack and start eating with her, showing no signs of leaving, Shireen tentatively asked, "Zhuogeng, aren't you in a hurry to leave today?"

Zhuogeng nodded and wrote on a nearby piece of paper: "I'll leave tomorrow morning."

Knowing he would stay until the next day, Shireen's gloom vanished. As they ate, she asked where he was taking her.

When she heard she was going to Pentos, Shireen immediately recalled the books she'd read about the Free Cities and imagined her future life there.

"Will you still visit me after I go to Pentos?"

Zhuogeng nodded.

"Is Pentos the largest city in the Free Cities?"

Zhuogeng nodded.

"I heard that..."

Shireen's little mouth kept asking questions, sometimes sharing amusing anecdotes about other Free Cities.

Listening to her chatter endlessly, Zhuogeng began to regret staying. He thought he might as well have spent the night in a tree branch.

He truly admired Shireen's vast knowledge. For such a young girl, she knew so much.

After finishing the backpack of food, Shireen seemed to have talked herself out. She and Zhuogeng chatted on the bed for a while longer before falling into a deep sleep. Zhuogeng lay beside her and soon began snoring loudly.

At dawn, Zhuogeng woke up. Shireen was curled up beside him, sleeping soundly like a kitten. Without waking her, he quietly opened the window and flew out.

On his way to King's Landing, he caught and roasted several large fish in Blackwater Bay to stave off his hunger before continuing his flight.

After circling King's Landing, he spotted a green, tree-shaded manor by the sea, adorned with colorful banners and lanterns. Landing on a large tree, he observed the scene closely. Long tables and chairs filled the courtyard, covered with luxurious carpets. Servants bustled among the guests, arranging fruits and delicacies on the tables.

Zhuogeng's gaze quickly settled on a long table where men and women sat together, all dressed in opulent robes and exuding an air of distinction.

At the head of the table sat a young, handsome man wearing a golden crown. To his right was a blonde noblewoman in her thirties, her posture graceful and her eyes sparkling with vivacity.

On the left sat a man with hair of alternating gold and white, his face showing no signs of age as he sat upright.

Zhuogeng quickly guessed their identities: the man in the golden crown must be Joffrey, and beside him were likely Cersei and Tywin.

Moving to the right along the long table, he finally spotted Tyrion, whose upper body was mostly hidden beneath the table. In the seven kingdoms, he was the only dwarf who could sit at such a table.

His golden hair was disheveled, and a faint red scar ran diagonally across his face—a mark from his defense of King's Landing.

Beside him stood a tall girl with shoulder-length auburn hair, fair skin, and a solemn expression that clashed starkly with the festive wedding atmosphere.

The guests vied to present gifts to Joffrey. Little Rose's father gave his son-in-law a golden goblet symbolizing his royal status. Tywin, the Hand of the King and Joffrey's maternal grandfather and paternal grandfather, presented him with a newly forged Valyrian steel sword. Tyrion gave him a book, a subtle wish that he would become a wise ruler.

As Tyrion spoke his congratulations, Joffrey's lips twitched, but he remained silent. The uncle and nephew appeared to be in perfect harmony.

After the gift-giving ceremony, the wedding feast officially began. Five dwarfs, dressed in colorful costumes and equipped with various props, performed a play about the War of the Five Kings.

As soon as the dwarfs took the stage, Tyrion's expression turned the darkest. The other guests reacted differently: some laughed loudly, others frowned, some watched Tyrion's reaction, and some were surprised by Joffrey's behavior.

Those who knew of their uncle-nephew relationship were shocked that Joffrey would publicly humiliate his uncle during his wedding. Even those unaware of the connection were slightly taken aback.

Joffrey laughed uncontrollably, while Little Rose grew increasingly uncomfortable. After learning from Sansa about Joffrey's monstrous nature, she had been cautious in her interactions, never imagining he would be even more deranged than she'd feared.

Watching Tyrion being humiliated in public, Varys frowned deeply, contemplating how to persuade him to leave King's Landing.

Cersei occasionally smiled and chuckled along with her son's wild laughter, stealing glances at Tyrion's dark expression with growing satisfaction.

Tywin, however, watched impassively as his true grandson, Joffrey, humiliated the shame of their House, the Lannisters.

After the dwarf's performance, Joffrey still refused to let his uncle Tyrion off the hook. He raised his golden goblet and ordered Tyrion to kneel and toast him.

The wedding feast fell silent. Some faces were solemn, while others wore expressions of amusement, clearly enjoying the spectacle. Cersei hadn't expected her son to take the humiliation she'd always wanted to inflict on her despised brother and amplify it so cruelly. A surge of satisfaction coursed through her.
