Chapter 54 - Everyone Wants to Kill Joffrey

The newly founded Academy couldn't offer every subject immediately. This enrollment period served not only to prepare for the Academy's establishment but also to identify and categorize talented individuals for future use.

After reviewing applications and conducting interviews, the candidates were classified and their abilities assessed.

Initially, the Academy planned to offer courses in Governance, Medicine, Languages, and Scholarship. Subjects like Construction, Music, and Art might be added later.

Governance was a broad field encompassing urban management, military logistics, and national administration. The specific curriculum would be further refined.

Scholars would possess extensive knowledge of fundamental history, geography, noble relations, family crests, and more.

Upon becoming official scholars, they would be qualified to teach others.

While busy with the Academy's establishment, Missandei also took time to compile a language learning book. She first focused on the Common Tongue, the most widely spoken language on the continent of Westeros.

Most Unsullied only spoke Valyrian, including Grey Worm. They only began learning the Common Tongue after joining Daenerys's service, taught by Jorah or Missandei.

Teaching methods were limited to oral instruction. If Missandei could compile a comprehensive textbook on language learning, Grey Worm would not only find it easier to learn but also acquire literacy and writing skills simultaneously.

These would be essential future studies for Grey Worm. As the Unsullied officer commanding the largest number of troops under Daenerys, he would need to master not only the Common Tongue but also arithmetic.

Understanding the geography of Westeros and the Slaver's Bay region, along with their basic history, was crucial. Otherwise, he wouldn't even understand military strategy discussions.

With a language textbook, Grey Worm wouldn't be the only beneficiary; other Unsullied officers could also benefit.

Seeing Missandei diligently working on the textbook, Darren felt a surge of inspiration but couldn't bring himself to steal her credit.

After thoroughly studying the Academy's basic structure, he immediately foresaw its future influence.

Without oaths, regardless of status or gender, anyone with talent could join. Darren could easily imagine the Academy's future scale.

Now that Queen Daenerys was encouraging the creation of books and texts, it would attract more talented and learned individuals and greatly enhance the Academy's influence.

Darren, having joined the Academy so early, was determined to compile books. He wouldn't rest in peace if he couldn't, and he began pondering how to approach this task.

While the Academy was being prepared, Daenerys received news from Astapor that the rebel leader Butcher Cleon and his co-conspirators had been captured and were being brought back.

However, Jorah and his men arrived too late. By the time they reached Astapor, Cleon had already launched his rebellion, castrating all the Good Masters' sons to create new Unsullied.

Fortunately, they weren't too late to save three members of the provisional council from execution.

Daenerys hadn't expected that the children of the Good Masters she had spared would now become the new Unsullied.

Following Daenerys's orders, Jorah and Grey Worm, after suppressing the rebellion, left behind one thousand Unsullied to maintain order and returned to Yunkai with the rest of their forces.

A day later, Jorah and Grey Worm returned, bringing Butcher Cleon and over a dozen other Astapor rebel leaders.

Cleon was tall and dark-skinned, a former slave himself, though he appeared to have never endured much hardship as a slave.

After being dragged to the execution grounds, Cleon and the other ringleaders continued to defend themselves. Daenerys immediately had Missandei announce their numerous crimes of rebellion:

They had overthrown the provisional council Daenerys had left behind, castrated the children of the Good Masters, and declared themselves kings of Astapor, ignoring Daenerys's rightful claim to the throne.

Daenerys would not allow the slaves she had freed to be shackled again, nor would she allow Astapor, which she had conquered, to be used as a stepping stone for others.

By publicly executing them all in Yunkai, she intended to warn the local Wise Master faction and those who sought to unite the new Ghis, old Ghis, and other forces. Anyone who dared to covet her city would meet the same fate as Cleon and his ilk.

As the crowd watched from a distance, over a dozen heads rolled to the ground. The crowd stirred, surprised that Queen Daenerys would show such ruthlessness to the very slaves she had once saved.

In that instant, they realized that Daenerys was far more than the "Misa" they had imagined.

Daenerys left one thousand Unsullied in Yunkai and appointed Darren as temporary governor. She then led the remaining six thousand Unsullied and two thousand Second Sons mercenaries away from Yunkai, heading for Meereen.

Having resolved his concerns, Zhuogeng could no longer stay idle and flew out of Yunkai once more.

He knew Shireen would be struggling to adapt to her new surroundings, so he visited her in Pentos first before heading to King's Landing.

The situation in King's Landing remained largely unchanged from the previous days. Tyrion was about to be tried for the king's murder, while the Stark mother and son continued to hold Riverrun.

News of Walder's Red Wedding spread throughout the North and Riverlands. The northern lords learned of Roose's betrayal of House Stark and united to organize an army to capture Ramsay Snow at Winterfell, only to find that he had already abandoned the city and vanished without a trace.

Varys's letter also contained news that Zhuogeng had long anticipated: Maester Aemon of the Night's Watch had sent word to King's Landing and the great lords, confirming that the Others were indeed on the move and heading toward the Wall.

While the Night's Watch had fulfilled their duty, Cersei, Tywin, and the great lords in King's Landing remained skeptical of the Others' information. Moreover, preoccupied with the ongoing civil war, they paid no heed to the Night's Watch's pleas for aid.

With the thousand-year-old Wall standing in their way, they dismissed the threat of the Others.

Zhuogeng naturally took the Others very seriously. This time, he would not allow Viserion to transform into an Ice Dragon and destroy The Wall.

However, Zhuogeng didn't believe that The Wall alone would bring peace to Westeros. He knew all too well the terrifying power of the Night King's Army of the Dead. With just over a thousand Night's Watchmen, it was impossible to stop the Night King.

Varys suspected that Joffrey's death was connected to the mysterious person. After extensive investigations, he only found the corpse of Jester Dontos. Only then did he realize that the stout servant who had taken Sansa away during the wedding feast was Dontos.

This made him suspect that Joffrey's death was inextricably linked to Dontos. Otherwise, why would he have been silenced just for escorting Sansa away?

But this was all he could uncover. He had no choice but to subtly ask Zhuogeng about the true mastermind behind the king's murder.

Zhuogeng had no intention of hiding the truth about Joffrey's poisoning from Varys. He even hoped that Varys would use this information to his advantage.

After leaving a message for Varys, he flew back to Daenerys's side. His speed had improved by nearly half since his first arrival in King's Landing. Now, visiting the capital felt like a casual trip.

***

In the dungeons of King's Landing, Tyrion, clad in prison garb and disheveled, huddled in a corner on a bed of straw, contemplating Joffrey's death.

Many would have wanted Joffrey dead, and Tyrion could only slowly eliminate suspects. His sister Cersei was the least likely killer; though Joffrey had beheaded Eddard out of personal spite and refused to fully obey her, she would never kill her own son.

His father, Tywin, was a different matter. For the sake of the family's interests, he might well murder his own grandson. Tommen, the heir, was far more compliant than Joffrey.
