The Great Masters and their slaves were stunned by the sight of collars scattered across the ground. As the slaves scrambled to pick up the broken collars, the Great Masters realized Daenerys wasn't attacking the city walls, but rather the minds of its masters.
Once they recovered, the Great Masters hastily ordered their slaves back to their rooms, forbidding them from leaving again.
Yet the barrels of collars continued to fall, smashing against rooftops, walls, and trees. The Great Masters and their free subordinates couldn't gather them fast enough.
Having already thrown the collars into Meereen, Daenerys waited for the slaves' reaction while ordering her army to set up camp outside the city for a temporary rest.
That night, as Daenerys strategized with her officers in their tent, she received a message from Varys's little bird as expected. This time, the boy stayed behind to guide them.
Upon learning that the sewage outlets provided a way to infiltrate Meereen, Daenerys ordered Grey Worm to lead a dozen men disguised as slaves to follow the boy at dawn and locate the sewer entrance.
After getting a general idea of the entrance, Grey Worm and his men, each carrying a dozen daggers, and the seven or eight-year-old boy approached the northern wall of Meereen, five hundred meters away.
The area was overgrown with weeds, and a ditch lay hidden beneath reeds as tall as two men. Following the ditch to the base of the city wall, they found the drain blocked by a sturdy iron grate.
Grey Worm produced a pry bar he had prepared. The four of them worked together to pry open the grate embedded in the wall and squeezed inside. The sewage in the meter-high tunnel only reached their calves. Following the boy's directions, they quickly found the exit.
The boy led them to an abandoned stable not far from the exit, where dozens of slaves were gathered.
A young slave was quietly persuading the others: "A few days ago, I heard rumors at the docks from more than one person about the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys. They say she burned the Good Masters to death in Astapor, cut off the Unsullied's collars, and won their loyalty."
"Then she went to Yunkai, threw all the Wise Masters into the dungeons, and freed all the slaves. It's all true. Do you see those two dragons flying in the sky, and the little one on her shoulder? The Great Master won't be able to withstand their dragonfire."
Grey Worm stood at the entrance, watching the young slave from a distance. He didn't move closer, wanting to hear what they would say next.
"I participated in two slave revolts in my youth, both ended in failure. This leg was broken by the Great Master during the second revolt. I don't want the other one broken too," said an old slave with graying temples.
"I remember that revolt. He's lucky—many were executed. The Great Master hates our revolts more than anything," added a middle-aged slave.
Seeing his opportunity, Grey Worm stepped into the crowd. "The Mother of Dragons, Daenerys, has come to free you. If you don't dare to rise up, you'll never win your freedom."
The slaves in the stable grew wary as they noticed the dozen or so unfamiliar faces following Grey Worm.
"Who are you?" the young slave who had been stirring them earlier asked suspiciously.
"You should have seen us on the city walls during the day," Grey Worm said, scanning the dozens of people present.
The young slave's eyes lit up. "Are you the Unsullied?"
When Grey Worm nodded, another young slave hesitated before speaking. "The Great Master strictly forbids us from touching weapons. How can we fight him and his men with just hoes?"
Grey Worm remained silent, nodding to his men. The group set down their shoulder bags, revealing short swords forged from fine steel.
Seeing the gleaming blades scattered across the ground, the slaves in the stable immediately grew restless.
"Take up arms and slaughter the Great Master! Open the gates and welcome the liberator Daenerys!" Grey Worm shouted, brandishing his sword.
"Kill the Great Master!"
"Kill the Great Master!"
The sight of Grey Worm's curved blade sent blood surging through the slaves' veins. They stepped forward, snatching up the swords, their faces contorted with rage. They stood ready for Grey Worm's command to ambush the Great Master outside the city walls.
"Divide into eight teams. Follow my men through the alleys to the gates. Kill the Great Master and his guards on sight—leave no survivors. The rest of you will come with me to open the gates and welcome the Queen into the city." After assigning his men, Grey Worm led over twenty of them out of the stable.
Each of the other teams was led by an Unsullied officer. They dispersed to sow chaos, while Grey Worm crept through the nearest alleys toward the gates, observing the guards.
Ten minutes later, the sounds of fighting and shouting erupted from the houses around the gate. The gate officer heard the commotion and ordered his men to investigate.
The men sent out hadn't returned yet, and sounds of fighting erupted from other parts of the city. The Great Master's officers sensed something was wrong. Remembering the collars projected into Meereen earlier that day, they immediately guessed what was happening. They summoned several subordinates to notify all the Great Masters and pulled over a dozen guards to investigate the surrounding unrest, preventing them from rushing the city gates.
Grey Worm, hiding in the shadows, noticed many guards had left the gate. Knowing reinforcements would arrive soon, he seized the opportunity in the guards' confusion and charged out with a group of Unsullied and slaves, their blades flashing in the moonlight.
The gate officer, worried about an attack on the gates, didn't expect over twenty attackers to surge from a narrow alley, their short swords glinting coldly under the moon.
*These aren't ordinary slaves,* he thought. Just then, a short sword slashed at his face. He parried it and immediately sensed the opponent's formidable skill.
With time running out, Grey Worm fought recklessly, risking a gash on his arm to kill the officer with a backhand strike and then turning on the others.
The remaining guards, already unnerved by the formidable opponent, lost all will to fight when they saw their officer cut down in two strokes. They turned and fled, weapons still in hand, fighting as they ran.
The Grey Worm and his men quickly reached the city gate. They killed two guards with three swift strikes, removed the bolt, and worked together to force the gate open.
Daenerys had been waiting at a distance. As soon as she heard the gate move, she ordered her army to charge. The Unsullied formed a shield wall to block the arrows raining down from the battlements.
Rhaegal and Viserion soared above the walls, unleashing two blasts of dragonfire. The guards on the flaming battlements screamed and scattered, some leaping to their deaths from the towering walls.
After their fiery assaults, the two dragons attacked the remaining defenders with their massive jaws, razor-sharp claws, and powerful tails.
Now the size of ponies, they were nearly impervious to ordinary swords. Countless beatings from Drogon had honed their combat skills and dramatically improved their physical resilience.
During the chaotic battle, they dodged spears thrown from unknown directions. By the end of the siege, the only injury was a minor scrape on one dragon's wing—a testament to their rigorous training.
Drogon did not participate in this attack, instead observing the two younger dragons' performance to refine future dragon-training strategies.
As the army poured through the gate, most of the city's slaves rose in revolt, joining the Unsullied and mercenaries to hunt down hiding Great Masters and free their fellow slaves from the dungeons.
