Chapter 65 - Handling Government Affairs

The more Varys thought about it, the more possible it seemed. But at the same time, a new question arose in his mind: skinchangers could completely control animals.

The stronger the creature, the harder it was to control. To dominate a dragon, the skinchanger's abilities would have to be extraordinarily powerful.

And even if the mysterious man could control dragons, how could Daenerys possibly agree to let him do so?

The more Varys thought about it, the less he understood. In the end, he gave up and warned Tyrion:

"I know you're very curious about the mysterious man's identity, but he warned me not to try to search for him or investigate him. So after you arrive in Slaver's Bay, don't openly ask the queen or anyone else about him."

"What a terrible feeling," Tyrion rolled his eyes.

Varys understood exactly how he felt. He had experienced it before, and still was.

"This time, it won't just be Shae traveling with you to Slaver's Bay. There will also be a little girl accompanying you."

"Who's going with us?" Tyrion felt he had already run out of energy to be shocked anymore.

"Shireen Baratheon, Stannis's daughter," Varys dropped yet another bombshell.

"That little girl who had greyscale as a child?" Tyrion finally couldn't help shouting.

To have him smuggle away Stannis's daughter—was Queen Daenerys not afraid Stannis would march an army straight into Slaver's Bay?

"Stannis now obeys the Red Woman completely. He has already burned Shireen's uncle alive, and may one day burn Shireen as well. The mysterious man had the Onion Knight secretly take Shireen away, then asked me to send her to Driftmark. After that, she rode a dragon across the Narrow Sea to Pentos. I settled her in the courtyard next to Shae's," Varys explained.

Tyrion had never imagined Stannis had become so obsessed with the Iron Throne that he would even burn his own daughter.

"Shireen rode a dragon across the Narrow Sea? Aren't the dragons Daenerys's mounts? She would allow Shireen to ride one?" Tyrion voiced his doubts.

Dragons were proud creatures. They would not casually allow anyone to ride them. Even their bonded dragonriders needed long training before they could truly mount them.

"That's why I said either the mysterious man can command dragons, or the queen herself instructed the dragon to carry Shireen," Varys explained.

"Did the mysterious man save Shireen simply out of kindness? No other motive?" Tyrion wanted to understand the mysterious figure beside Daenerys a little better.

"What other motive could there be? To threaten Stannis into giving up the Iron Throne?" Varys replied with a question of his own.

Tyrion knew Stannis well enough. Even before being bewitched by the Red Woman, no one could have used his daughter to force him to surrender his claim.

The mysterious man had gone through so much trouble to save an unrelated little girl. He clearly wasn't as cold-hearted as Tyrion had imagined. Tyrion found himself feeling a bit more favorable toward him.

"Where did Sansa go?" Only now did Tyrion remember his legal wife.

"She was taken away by Petyr Baelish. They're probably headed for the Eyrie."

"Robb's still alive. Why would Petyr still take Sansa away?" Tyrion knew many people had once coveted the North and Sansa herself, but that had only been because Robb's death had seemed likely. Even Tyrion himself had married her because Tywin intended to engineer Robb's downfall.

But after the Red Wedding failed, killing Robb would be much harder. Taking Sansa no longer seemed meaningful.

"You'd have to ask Petyr himself. I still don't know what he wants," Varys admitted.

"Can you find a way to rescue her?" Though marrying Sansa had never been Tyrion's choice, and he had never brought himself to touch her, he still didn't want her trapped beside an old man forever, even if he himself was about to flee far away with Shae.

"I'll think of something," Varys said. He also knew Sansa would not fare well with Petyr.

"When can I leave for Pentos?" After surviving the trial by combat, Tyrion had already grown utterly disillusioned with King's Landing. Besides, his sister hated him enough to want him dead at any moment, and Tywin wished he would disappear forever.

"As soon as you want. Tomorrow night should be possible."

Tyrion thought for a moment. There was nothing left in King's Landing worth staying for.

"Tomorrow night, then."

Tyrion learned more about Slaver's Bay from Varys and was shocked again to discover that Barristan Selmy had long since joined the Dragon Queen and become one of her Queensguard.

Daenerys had already conquered the three cities of Slaver's Bay and now commanded ten thousand soldiers and over a hundred great ships.

When he heard that Daenerys intended to establish an academy, Tyrion was once again deeply stunned. He had never expected that little Targaryen girl to possess such bold vision.

No oaths of loyalty were required. Anyone who met the qualifications could enter the academy. It completely overturned the traditional worldview of this world.

Combined with her encouragement of book-writing and scholarship, Tyrion—himself a man of immense learning—understood perfectly how tempting this policy would be for scholars and skilled specialists.

He could already foresee that this academy would one day surpass the Citadel and become the most influential center of learning across the known world.

Now he was genuinely eager to see Slaver's Bay for himself.

Meereen.

Inside the largest pyramid, Daenerys was handling government affairs. Since she had decided to remain temporarily and govern Slaver's Bay, she needed to learn how to do these things.

In the vast hall, Daenerys sat upon her seat. Barristan stood guard at her side, while Drogon perched on her shoulder, dozing off.

The old man below was already the thirty-something trivial case Daenerys had dealt with that day.

"Honored Mother of Dragons, my name is Puka. I once served Great Master Tatalir," the sixty-year-old man introduced himself.

"You speak the Common Tongue?" Daenerys asked in surprise.

"I was once a teacher, instructing the Great Master's children in reading and writing. Since your arrival, I left their household. But now I have nothing to do. I ask that you allow me to return and continue teaching the children," the old man said, lowering his head.

"You still want to return to the Great Masters and be enslaved?" Daenerys asked in shock. Although some people had previously wanted to leave with slave traders, encountering someone genuinely willing to return still surprised her deeply.

"The Great Master never abused or mistreated me. I was fed and housed very well. I hope you will grant my request." The old man knelt down, resolute.

[If he wants to go, let him go. Just pay him wages.] Half-asleep, Drogon muttered weakly in his thoughts.

Though he didn't understand the art of governing nations, as someone from the modern world, many issues seemed easy to solve from a modern perspective.

This wasn't the first time he had indirectly guided Daenerys. She learned quickly too—though she still had her reservations. Sometimes she adopted his suggestions, and sometimes pretended not to hear them, afraid Drogon might discover her secret of overhearing his thoughts.

Little did she know that Drogon had already reverse-played her countless times.

As for Daenerys's little tricks, Drogon found them amusing. For these unimportant matters, it hardly mattered how they were handled anyway.
