Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Mother-in-Law’s Bet

Susan jolted. "What? Leo offered a 30‑million‑yuan betrothal gift? That's absurd!"

Though she was deeply unhappy with Kayson, resentful of his incompetence and for making her the laughingstock of Yuncheng,

Susan had her principles. As long as she was still married, she would never get engaged to another man.

This had crossed her bottom line.

Bang!

Susan yanked the door open and stepped out.

"Sweetie, at midnight tonight, your relationship with Kayson will be over.

Leo is wealthy, handsome, and willing to give our family 30 million. He's hundreds of times better than Kayson. Hurry and sign the divorce papers."

Liu Yun insisted self-righteously:

"I'm not greedy. For a woman, to receive no betrothal gift at all would mean she's utterly worthless, wouldn't it?

This isn't about money. It's about a woman's reputation.

A man lives for face, a tree for bark. Why else do we wear clothes?

You two were never real husband and wife, only in name. The agreement states you owe him nothing after the divorce.

Come here. Talk with Leo."

Liu Yun pulled Susan toward Leo.

Susan said calmly, "Leo, I am a married woman! Know your place!"

Leo shook his head.

"Susan, I can wait. We can talk after you get divorced tomorrow."

He believed her status as a married woman would only last until midnight.

According to their contract, Susan and Kayson would be divorced by then.

He could wait a few more hours.

Susan said, "You are not the one I'm looking for, and I have no feelings for you. Please leave."

She was indeed upset with Kayson, but she disliked Leo even more.

She had never even met him before. It was ridiculous.

She wanted a marriage with someone who could resonate with her soul.

He could be poor, but he had to strive and have dignity—not wander the streets pretending to be a fortune-teller.

Kayson happily held Susan's hand. "Don't worry. I will become a worthy husband for you."

Susan pulled her hand away sharply. "Refusing Leo does not mean I accept you."

Leo laughed loudly.

"Haha, Kayson! See? Don't think Susan could ever love you. Impossible!

How could a swan ever fall for a toad?"

Su Yue's boyfriend Shawn mocked from the side: "You wanting to eat swan meat is nothing but a fantasy."

Leo had been flustered by Susan's rejection, but he snickered when he saw Kayson being humiliated too.

If even he couldn't win her over, what chance did Kayson have?

Liu Yun stamped her feet in anger.

"Kayson, are you even a man? The contract clearly says you end things with Susan after three years!

Why won't you leave? What are you clinging to?"

Kayson looked at Susan's back.

"I'm not staying for your food.

Susan is infested with an evil spirit and her life is in danger. Only I can save her.

Give me one month. If by then Susan still wants a divorce, I will sign without hesitation.

But not now. I won't sign—Susan needs me."

"Hehe…" Su Haiyang, who had barely spoken, stood up.

"That excuse is pathetic. Susan is perfectly healthy.

You're acting like a madman, saying everyone is sick. You're the one who needs a psychiatrist."

Leo and Shawn burst out laughing.

"Nutjob!" Leo sneered. "You're crazy over Susan! I'm staying right here!

Until midnight! I'll watch you sign the divorce papers! Then we'll see what you have to say!"

Liu Yun glared furiously at Kayson. "Idiot! Let's make a bet!

You keep saying my daughter has an evil aura. Prove it. If you can't, you sign the divorce papers immediately!"

Kayson: "Fine! And if I accurately describe her symptoms, you cannot force us to divorce. Remember your word."

Liu Yun planted her hands on her hips. "Quit stalling! Speak!"

Kayson said, "We should talk about this inside the room."

The matter was sensitive, and Leo, a lecher, was out in the living room.

So he went into the bedroom with Susan and Liu Yun alone.

Kayson closed the door, turned to Susan, and said:

"Susan, tell me—do you suffer from bone-piercing cold on the last day of every month?

And is there a faint pink line five millimeters below your chest?"

Susan was shocked.

She did have those symptoms, ever since her trip to the East China Sea.

The last day of each month was agonizing, like falling into an ice pit, but she thought it was just a cold.

The mark was in a sensitive area, so she was too embarrassed to tell anyone.

And it disappeared after the last day, so she never took it seriously.

How could Kayson possibly know?

Only Liu Yun and Susan were in the room, so Kayson spoke plainly.

Liu Yun was stunned—she had no idea about this.

She roughly lifted Susan's top to check right in front of Kayson.

"Mom, stop…"

Whoosh!

Blood rushed to Kayson's head instantly. He felt dizzy and his vision blurred.

He nearly lost his balance.

He quickly steadied himself against the wall, his face burning red.

Liu Yun looked carefully. Sure enough, there was a faint pink line just below Susan's chest, so light it was barely visible, creeping up toward her heart.

After staring for a moment, she spun around and snapped at Kayson:

"You bastard! You drew that on her with a crayon to trick us! You just don't want a divorce!"

"Don't think I don't know what you're up to!

You're getting better at this superstitious nonsense! You liar!"

Kayson: "Wipe it yourself and see if it comes off.

Why do you always jump to conclusions? Can't you think before you speak?"

"Nonsense! Who are you to lecture me? Who do you think you are?" Liu Yun roared.

Kayson: "I'm not lecturing you. I'm reminding you."

"Get lost! I don't need you telling me what to do!" Liu Yun shouted.

Kayson fell silent. This mother-in-law would fire back ten insults for every word he said, nonstop for days.

Liu Yun grabbed a white towel, soaked it in hot water, and scrubbed hard below Susan's chest.

After nearly half an hour, she realized the faint pink line came from inside the skin—it was not drawn on.

Liu Yun immediately turned on Kayson furiously:

"My daughter was perfectly fine until she married you! How did she get this line?

You brought this curse upon her! Get out of my house at once!"
