Chapter 2 - Escape or Be Devoured

The fire didn't slow.

If anything—it spread faster.

Zeke stood over the corpse of the beast he had just killed, chest rising and falling as the heat pressed against his skin. The smell of burning wood mixed with blood and charred flesh clung to the air, thick enough to taste.

Around him, the village continued to collapse.

Screams were fewer now.

Not because people were escaping—

But because there were fewer left to scream.

Zeke's grip tightened around the broken plank in his hand.

"…This place is done."

There was no saving it.

No miracle coming.

Only survival.

The prompt hovered calmly in his vision, completely detached from the chaos around him.

Zeke stared at it.

Then at the dead beast.

Then at the burning village.

"…No rush."

That thought alone surprised him.

A few minutes ago, he would've smashed the first option without thinking.

Now—

He hesitated.

Calculated.

"…If I'm going to use this… might as well do it right."

His eyes hardened.

"15 seconds."

A bright screen snapped into place.

"Looking to maximize your gains? Try RewardPlus™—more results, less effort!"

"…Unbelievable…"

A surge of warmth spread through his body.

Not explosive.

Not overwhelming.

But steady.

Controlled.

Like something deep inside him had just been… nudged awake.

Zeke exhaled slowly.

"…So this is what it feels like."

His body felt slightly lighter.

Stronger.

Still weak—

But no longer helpless.

At his feet, something faintly glimmered within the beast's corpse. A small, dark crystal, barely the size of his thumb.

Zeke picked it up.

The moment it touched his palm, a strange sensation flickered through him.

Warm.

Alive.

"…Yeah. This world's definitely not normal."

A scream echoed nearby.

Zeke turned.

A smaller demon beast—thin, hunched—was clawing wildly at a corpse, tearing into it with messy, desperate bites. Blood splattered across the dirt as it fed without restraint, barely aware of anything else.

Feral.

Mindless.

Then—

Another creature approached.

Larger.

Slower.

It didn't rush.

Didn't snarl.

It simply watched.

Waiting.

The smaller beast continued feeding, oblivious.

Then in a blur—

The larger one struck.

Clean.

Precise.

The smaller beast collapsed instantly, its throat torn open before it even reacted.

Silence followed.

The larger creature lowered its head and began feeding.

Calmly.

Zeke's eyes narrowed.

"…Not all of them are stupid."

A chill crept down his spine.

The fire crackled louder.

The heat intensified.

Zeke forced himself to move.

Staying here meant dying.

He stumbled forward, weaving through collapsing structures and scattered bodies. His legs still felt weak, but the earlier warmth in his body helped him keep moving.

Barely.

A beam crashed down behind him.

Zeke flinched.

Then—

His body moved before his mind could catch up.

A sharp step forward.

A twist.

The collapsing beam slammed into the ground just inches behind him.

Zeke didn't stop moving.

"…Okay…"

His breathing steadied.

"…I get it now."

Use what's free.

Save what matters.

He pushed forward, leaving the center of the village behind.

The further he moved, the fewer humans he saw.

Not because it was safer—

But because there was nothing left to save.

Then—

A sound.

Different.

Not chaotic.

Not wild.

A low growl echoed from deeper within the flames.

Steady.

Controlled.

Zeke froze.

Slowly, he turned his head.

And saw it.

The creature stood taller than the rest.

Its body was massive, muscles coiled beneath dark, hardened skin. Its eyes burned—not with hunger—

But with awareness.

It wasn't attacking.

It wasn't rushing.

It was watching.

Its gaze moved across the battlefield, tracking movement, selecting targets.

Choosing.

"…Yeah…"

Zeke took a slow step back.

"…Nope."

That thing was different.

Nearby, smaller beasts still fought over scraps, tearing into whatever they could reach.

But as the larger creature moved—

They scattered.

Not wildly.

Not in panic.

But in something closer to instinctive submission.

Then it moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

One of the remaining villagers tried to run.

Didn't make it three steps.

The creature was already there.

One strike.

Clean.

Efficient.

Dead.

Zeke felt it in his gut.

That wasn't something he could fight.

Not even close.

Zeke's eyes flickered to the options.

The 15-second one was locked.

Still on cooldown.

The 30-second one…

He stared at it.

Thirty minutes cooldown.

"…If I use that now…"

He clenched his jaw.

"…I might need it more later."

The creature's head shifted slightly.

Its gaze swept across the area.

For a split second—

Zeke felt like it saw him.

His heart slammed against his chest.

"…Move."

He didn't hesitate.

"5 seconds!"

Zeke ran.

Not clean.

Not graceful.

But fast enough.

Every step felt like it might be his last.

Behind him, the sounds of death continued.

But no immediate pursuit came.

He didn't stop.

Didn't look back.

Didn't think.

Only when the fire faded behind him…

Only when the screams became distant echoes…

Only when the forest swallowed him whole—

Did Zeke finally collapse.

His body hit the ground hard, chest heaving as exhaustion took over.

His muscles screamed.

His lungs burned.

But he was alive.

For now.

Zeke lay there, staring up at the dark canopy above.

"…This world…"

He let out a weak laugh.

"…is insane."

Then—

A new prompt appeared.

Different.

Heavier.

60s → ??? (First-Time Bonus)

Zeke stared at it.

Something about it felt… different.

Dangerous.

Tempting.

"…One minute…"

His fingers twitched slightly.

He thought back—

To the creature in the flames.

To the way it moved.

The way it watched.

The way everything else avoided it.

Zeke exhaled slowly.

"…If five seconds can save my life…"

His eyes darkened.

"…then what the hell does sixty do?"

The system remained silent.

Waiting.

And for the first time since arriving in this world—

Zeke hesitated.

Not out of fear.

But anticipation.
