Chapter 3 - If You Cross This Line, There’s No Going Back

I shouldn't have stayed.

After watching him walk toward them…After understanding, even if only halfway, the kind of world he belonged to…

I should've left.

Forgotten him.Blocked him out of my mind.Gone back to my life like nothing had happened.

But I didn't.

Because the moment he took that first step away from me…

I felt something worse than fear.

I felt empty.

And that's what destroyed me.

I don't know how long I stood there.

Watching.

Barely breathing.

Unable to think clearly.

They talked.

I couldn't hear what they were saying, but their movements were enough.

One of the men stepped too close.Another subtly circled him.

It wasn't a conversation.

It was a warning.

And Adrian…

He didn't step back.

He stood his ground.

Cold.

Like he had been in that situation before.

Like he knew exactly how to survive in that kind of world.

That should have been enough to make me run.

But instead…

I took a step forward.

"You're unbelievably stubborn."

His voice stopped me.

I don't know when he broke away from them.

I don't know how he got back so fast.

But he was there.

Right in front of me again.

More on edge.

More dangerous.

"And you're unbelievably mysterious," I replied, trying to stay calm.

"This is not the time for this."

"It never is with you."

"Because there shouldn't be a 'this.'"

"And yet, here it is."

Silence.

Heavy.

The kind of silence that isn't the absence of words…

but the overflow of everything else.

"I told you to leave."

"And I didn't."

"I noticed."

"Then stop repeating it."

He stepped closer.

Too close.

Again.

"Do you want to die?" he asked quietly.

It didn't sound exaggerated.

It didn't sound dramatic.

It sounded real.

And still…

I didn't move.

"No," I said. "But I'm not going to run from something I don't understand."

"This isn't something you need to understand."

"It is if I'm in the middle of it."

"You're not in the middle of it."

"Then why are you kissing me like I am?"

That hit him.

I saw it.

In his expression.

In his breathing.

In the way his eyes dropped to my lips again.

"Don't use that," he murmured.

"Use what?"

"What happened between us."

"I'm not using it."

"Then stop bringing it up like that."

"I can't."

Another pause.

Another internal war.

"This is a mistake," he said.

"Maybe."

"No. Not maybe."

"Then prove it."

I shouldn't have said that.

But I did.

Because deep down…

I wanted him to fail.

And he did.

He grabbed my face.

Firm.

No gentleness.

No permission.

And kissed me.

Again.

But this time…

It was different.

Darker.

More intense.

More… dangerous.

It wasn't just desire.

It was need.

Frustration.

Something broken trying to feel alive.

My hands clutched his jacket.

His slid down to my waist.

And for a second…

Nothing else mattered.

The world.

The danger.

The men watching.

Nothing.

Until—

"Adrian."

A voice.

Male.

Sharp.

He pulled away instantly.

Like he had been torn off me.

He turned his head slowly.

And I saw him.

One of the men.

Closer now.

Too close.

"Problem?" the man asked.

His tone was calm.

But his eyes…

weren't.

"No," Adrian replied.

Cold.

Controlled.

"Then finish what you started."

The air turned heavy.

"I'm busy," Adrian said.

"Doesn't look like it."

The man looked at me.

Slowly.

From head to toe.

Like he was evaluating something.

And I didn't like it.

Not one bit.

"She's none of your concern," Adrian added.

"Everything about you is our concern."

Silence.

And then…

I understood.

It wasn't just that Adrian was "involved in something."

It was that he wasn't free.

"Go," he whispered, barely moving his lips.

"No."

"Don't make this harder."

"It already is."

The man smiled.

But it wasn't a pleasant smile.

"Does she know?" he asked.

My heart started racing.

"No," Adrian answered immediately.

"Then this just got more interesting."

He took a step toward me.

And this time…

I stepped back.

Not out of fear.

Out of instinct.

"Don't touch her," Adrian said.

His voice…

wasn't the same.

Lower.

More dangerous.

The man raised his hands, like he didn't want trouble.

But his smile stayed.

"Relax," he said. "I'm just curious."

"She's not part of this."

"Right now… it looks like she is."

Silence.

The kind that screams.

"Go," Adrian repeated.

This time firmer.

More urgent.

And this time…

I listened.

Not because I wanted to.

But because I finally understood something I hadn't before.

This wasn't just about him.

This was about surviving.

I took a step back.

Then another.

Without taking my eyes off him.

"This isn't over," I murmured.

His eyes locked onto mine.

And for the first time…

I didn't see resistance.

I saw fear.

For me.

"I wish it was," he said.

And that…

hurt more than it should have.

I turned.

And walked away.

But this time…

it wasn't like before.

Because now I knew.

There was something dark.

Something dangerous.

Something that could destroy everything.

And still…

I couldn't walk away.

Because the problem wasn't him anymore.

It was what he had awakened in me.

And that…

had no cure.

That night, I didn't cry.

Didn't scream.

Didn't break anything.

But something inside me…

changed.

Because now it wasn't curiosity anymore.

It was a decision.

And even though I knew crossing that line could destroy me…

I had already taken the first step.

And I wasn't going back. 🔥
