Chapter 48 - Splitting Vanguard and way south

The dawn of the Northern Wastes broke over the horizon, casting a bloody glare across the sprawling field of snow, ice, and reinforced wooden palisades. Inside the royal command tent, which was pitched near the heart of the recovering Vanguard camp, Antares opened his eyes.

He didn't wake with the slow, groggy hesitation typical of mortals after days of brutal hard work.

Instead, he snapped awake, his mind instantly sharp and clear, his entire body pulsing with an unexpected, roaring surge of pure, raw vitality.

It was far more energy than he had imagined feeling after the exhausting events of the past week.

His mana heart, now hummed with the resonance like that of a contained star, adaptations to the increasing mana density of the world taking deep root. This was no simple rest; it was the Sovereignty itself adapting, hardening him for the monumental tasks ahead.

He stood up from his simple cot, the freezing air of the tent washing over his bare torso without causing a single shiver. With practiced, efficient movements, he began to don his heavy obsidian armor. Piece by piece, the dark, light-absorbing metal locked into place with satisfying, heavy clicks, the silver sigil of the Ant Tribe—a stylized mandible surrounding a mountain—gleaming proudly on his chest plate.

He buckled his blade, Eos, to his hip, threw his heavy travel cloak over his shoulders, and strode out of the tent. The camp was already awake, the air thick with the smell of woodsmoke, roasted Terror Wolf meat, and the metallic tang of the forge. Antmen soldiers paused their duties to bow deeply as he passed, their eyes reflecting a newfound, absolute faith.

In the center of the frosted camp, the thirty Red Sons were already standing at absolute attention. Unlike the elder clan leaders who bore the heavy, hybrid traits of ancient beast-blood, these freshly hatched elite soldiers possessed remarkably refined, strikingly human appearances beneath their terrifying, ant-mimicking armor. As some adjusted their helmets, their faces revealed sharp, symmetrical, completely human features—strikingly handsome faces that were entirely devoid of warmth, possessing the cold, unyielding expressions of statues sculpted solely for war.

Antares walked slowly past their rigid lines, his eyes assessing their stance and preparedness. He knew the tactical reality of their current situation. The surface camp was recovering, but he could not take a single chance on the North's defense.

A stray Lycan ,migrating monster packs, or some other threat could launch a surprise assault, and if they succeeded, the access tunnels leading directly to the defenseless underground settlement would be exposed.

The North required an iron fist to maintain order and defense. The South required a lethal vanguard for diplomacy and order. Antares stopped at the front of the formation, his gaze locking onto his two firstborn sons, the core of this new generation.

"Adam. Xeras," the King's voice rumbled, cutting easily through the whistling northern wind.

The two brothers stepped forward. Adam, the firstborn and absolute Commander of the Red Sons, moved with a calm, regal authority. His human face, visible for a fleeting moment before he lowered his ant-shaped helmet, was a mirror of stoic discipline and intelligence. To his right stood Xeras, the second born and Lieutenant of the cohort, whose expression was sharper, radiating a more volatile, predatory intensity that only suggested violence.

Both dropped instantly to one knee, crossing their multiple lower arms over their chests in salute.

"We await your order, High Father," Adam spoke, his voice carrying the natural weight of a leader.

"The Hive expands on two fronts simultaneously, and we cannot afford to show weakness on any of them." Antares announced, looking down at them. "I am dividing the Red sons into two groups."

He looked directly at Adam. "Adam, you will take nine of your brothers. A cohort of ten. You will fly south with me. You will be my honor guard, my shield, and my shadow when we stand before the Redbeard Pirates on the southern beaches. If diplomacy fails, we will be the force that reminds them that we are masters of this land."

"By your will, High Father." Adam replied, his grip tightening on his massive longsword.

Antares then turned his gaze to Xeras. "Xeras. The remaining Red Sons will stay here in the North. You will hold the rank of Lieutenant under General Yanrid's command. Your sole duty is the absolute defense of this camp, the protection of the clay pits, and ensuring the entrance leading to the settlement remains safe. You are the perimeter's end. If anything, mortal or monster, approaches these walls with hostile intent, you erase it from existence. Is that clear?"

Xeras's amber eyes flashed fiercely behind his polarized visor. A savage grin touched his lips. "The North will become a graveyard for anyone who dares approach, High Father. I will personally deliver their skulls of any trespassors."

Antares nodded, satisfied.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Antares did not want a grand, theatrical goodbye. Fanfare was for empires that had already achieved peace; the Ant Tribe was still writing it's future.

At the southern boundary of the camp's wooden palisades, Yanrid, Lord Velas, and Kael stood waiting. Kael was sitting heavily on a reinforced wooden crate, his massive torso still wrapped in thick medicinal bandages, while Velas leaned slightly on a runic staff, his pale face reflecting the harsh morning light.

"Since the matter of the camp's security has been settled I can leave in peace." Antares told Yanrid, stopping before the youngest general in the ant tribe. "Xeras and his brothers are at your disposal. Their chain of command goes through you, Yanrid. Do not waste them on simple patrol duties. Use them as the blades they were made to be."

"They will be placed where the threat is greatest, My King," Yanrid replied, bowing his head deeply.

"We will head for the clay pits within forty-eight hours, and we will take samples and test them." Antares's vision for the future fortifications and infrastructures would be realized if this expedition went well.

Antares turned his gaze to the two injured clan leaders. "Velas, keep your mages focused on absorbing those high-grade crystals we harvested from the wolves. We need that magical artillery operational. Kael..."

Antares offered the Blacksmith a rare, soft nod. "Your clay pits are a potential game-changer for us. I trust you to manage the blueprints that I gave you for the surface outposts well. But Kael... stay in your chair until Riya clears you for the forge."

Kael let out a rough, booming chuckle that turned into a slight grimace as his ribs protested the movement. "I'll manage the blueprints, Lord Antares. I won't move a muscle... except to direct the excavation. But My King..." He met Antares's eyes seriously. "Make sure you bring back some of that foreign steel from those sea-rats. I want to see what the rest of the world is forging."

"I will," Antares said simply. "We will obtain the resources we need one way or another."

Without another word of farewell, the King turned toward the southern horizon. His internal mana core, fully operational and adapting, ignited with a deep, resonant hum. A dense aura of red kinetic force erupted around his body, instantly vaporizing the snow beneath his boots.

*BOOM.*

Antares launched into the sky, a dynamic, black streak of devastating, supersonic speed. His insectoid wings flapping at high speed.

Right behind him, Adam and the other selected Red Sons were also flying with him.

Ten red meteors shot into the air, locking into a flawless, aerodynamic escort formation flanking their King. The sheer back draft of their collective departure sent a massive, physical wave of displaced air cascading across the camp, scattering loose snow for hundreds of yards and physically pushing against the wooden walls.

Yanrid, Velas, and Kael watched the eleven streaks of light rapidly disappear into the bleak, grey northern clouds, heading straight south at a speed that defied reality.

--------------------------------------------------

The southern part of the Antmen territory that Antares and his elite vanguard crossed was vast, a tapestry of different ecosystems that shifted beneath them.

Antares flew with absolute focus but he couldn't help but admire the beauty of his lands, but now he had the massive task of using and developing this unused resources located in and on them.

This was his first look at the land he intended to tame, but his mind was already in the South. "The Redbeard Pirates." he mused, analyzing the situation. *A maritime supremacy. Commerce. Wealth. Foreign technology.*

His mission was clear: secure trade deals to access resources the tribe lacked. Kael's need for new metals for weaponry, the Hive's need for new technologies—all of it depended on this interaction. Yajin's old connections might open the door, but the Redbeards respected only one language: strength. The 10 Red Sons, flanking him, were the key. They were the physical argument that the Antmen were no longer a broken and weak tribe.

After hours of high speed flight, the temperate forest began to shift. The air temperature rose, the cool northern breeze replaced by heavy, stagnant humidity. The dense canopy below them turned from deep pine green to vibrant, tropical emerald. They had crossed into the South—the 'emerald hell' that Yajin and Sira had navigated.

Finally, after hours of nonstop flight, the endless canopy abruptly ended. The jungle dropped away into a massive, sheer wall of black basalt cliffs. And beyond them lay the South's true master.

The ocean. A terrifyingly vast, endless expanse of churning cobalt blue.

### On the Southern Brink

High atop the massive basalt plateau overlooking this endless blue expanse, the atmosphere was a tense, waiting game.

The warm, humid Southern air, heavily saturated with the sharp, clean scent of sea brine, was a profound change from the North. On this rocky precipice, which offered a perfect, unobstructed tactical vantage point of the beach below, Yajin and Lady Sira were preparing for the imminent, critical parley.

Unlike the baseline Antmen or the newly forged Red Sons who possessed refined human appearances, Yajin was a proud product of the Ashfang Clan. Standing over nine feet tall, his massive, heavily muscled frame was covered in thick, crimson-tinted skin that was as tough as boiled leather. Two prominent, ivory tusks protruded upward from his lower jaw, framing a face that was brutal, weathered, and inherently intimidating—the classic physiology of a red orc, but with the specific muscle density of an Antman warrior.

Yajin stood at the very edge of the plateau, restlessly checking the high-frequency vibration arrays on his twin curved bio-blades. The high-pitched, almost microscopic hum of the metal cutting through the air was the only sound besides the crashing waves below.

Beside him, Lady Sira was the picture of pristine elegance amidst the raw environment. Her deep-violet robes fluttered gracefully in the ocean breeze, entirely unsoiled by the mud of the jungle they had traversed. Her glowing cyan eyes were locked on a small, glowing communication crystal resting on a stone pedestal.

"The flare signal was received hours ago," Sira noted, her voice calm and melodic, cutting through the heavy humidity. "Their communication officer acknowledged our location. A large Pirate longboat is already detaching from the lower bays of The Kraken's Grave. It is making its final approach to the beach below. They will be here within the hour."

Yajin grunted, a low, guttural vibration that rattled through his massive chest. He ran a thick, red hand over the intricate pattern on the pommel of his blade. "The Redbeards don't like to wait, My Lady. And they certainly don't like being summoned to a desolate shoreline by a faction they consider a collapsed, terrestrial empire."

Yajin stared past Sira, toward the far, Northern horizon, where bruised clouds still gathered, looking for any sign of a familiar golden-black or crimson streak.

"I hope His Majesty reaches here soon," Yajin muttered, his prominent tusks catching the bright sunlight. "Negotiating with Admiral Tristan's envoys without the king's presence is... a dangerous game. They rely on overwhelming visual intimidation. If they perceive us as weak, or if they realize we lack a naval fleet to enforce our borders, this parley will turn into a simple display of their firepower before the first contract is even produced."

Sira turned her glowing eyes toward the endless cobalt ocean, where the distant, titanic silhouette of *The Kraken's Grave* sat anchored miles out, a terrifying monument to global commerce and absolute naval dominance. In the morning light, they could barely make out the distant motion of life on the floating megacity.

"The King will arrive, Yajin," Sira said, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute, unwavering faith.

She raised her hands gracefully, weaving a subtle, defensive wind current around the perimeter of their camp—both to keep them cool and as a passive defensive barrier in case the meeting turned violent. "And when he does, the Redbeards will realize that the earth beneath their feet no longer belongs to them. Let us go down to the sand. The tide is turning."

They descended the narrow, treacherous path from the plateau, reaching the sandy beach below just as the large Pirate longboat crested a massive wave near the shoreline.

The boat was constructed of dark, sea-weathered wood, heavily armored and powered by the synchronized rowing of fifty strong, battle-hardened individuals. Flying from the prow was the same black flag as the mother ship, displaying the terrifying Red Kraken sigil. As it hit the shallow waters, the crew jumped into the surf, expertly beaching the heavy vessel.

Thirty Pirates disembarked. They were a motley, veteran crew—humans, beastmen, and individuals with subtle water-beast traits, all heavily armed with steel and exotic, runic blasters.

At their head walked the Envoy Captain—Captain Roderick, a subordinate of Admiral Tristan, the Grand Admiral of the Redbeards. Roderick was a tall human, his skin weathered by salt and foreign suns. He wore an immaculate, deep crimson captain's coat that matched the flag, heavily adorned with gold trim and the medals of naval victories. He wore a wide, tricorn hat that did little to hide his arrogant, sneering face.

He strode past his men, ignoring Yajin's monstrous Ashfang appearance, and stopped twenty paces before Lady Sira. He looked them both up and down with open contempt, expecting weak, primitive landmen.

"So," Roderick's voice rasped, filled with the arrogant confidence of someone backed by a floating megacity. "The Ant Tribe. The ones who hide under the earth. You claim to have trade deals for us. You sent a flare requesting parley. We are busy traders so make it quick. Admiral Tristan expects this parley to produce wealth, or will it produces target practices for our new weapons. I wonder which it will be?"

The tension on the beach skyrocketed. Behind Roderick, his crew subtly shifted, their weapons ready. Lady Sira stood her ground, her face calm, but her mana already gathering. Yajin's tusks bared as he slowly gripped his blades, the high-frequency hum growing louder.

Roderick sneered again, stepping closer, closing the distance. "Well? Speak up. Where is your leader? Or did he send his pets to negotiate his surrender?"

Just as Roderick stepped within ten feet of Sira, intending to physically intimidate her, the entire atmosphere on the beach violently inverted.

A high-altitude, screaming roar, like a collapsing mountain, ripped the tropical silence in half.

*KABOOM.*

The air itself shattered with a localized sonic boom. The Pirates, Sira, and Yajin all flinched, covering their ears.

A split second later, the ground of the beach detonated upward.

A localized blast of dynamic force cratered the sand perfectly between Captain Roderick and Lady Sira. The displacement was massive, a shockwave that threw sand hundreds of yards and pushed the Pirate crew back several steps.

As the sand cleared, the shape within the crater solidified.

King Antares, cloaked in black and silver, his face battle-scarred and stoic, stood silently within the small depression his landing had made. The sheer density of his adaptation-evolved Sovereign Aura was overwhelming, a silent, invisible weight that instantly doused the aggressive energy of the Pirate crew. Roderick, who was closest, recoiled, staggering back, his arrogance evaporating in an instant as his brain recognized a predator.

Antares did not look at the Pirates. He simply looked at Lady Sira and Yajin, checking their status.

Right behind him, ten massive, red-and-black armored figures descended gracefully from the Northern sky, landing in perfect synchronization, surrounding their King in a tight arc.

The Crimson Vanguard. Adam at their front.

Roderick stared at the massive orcite Yajin, then back at the King, then at the ten refined human faces visible beneath the Red Sons' helmets. He looked at *The Kraken's Grave* on the horizon, then back at the eleven streaks that had crossed the sky. For the first time in his career, Captain Roderick understood that he was outmatched, and the Redbeards had vastly underestimated the 'broken' Ant Tribe.

" I'm king Antares Antis and these are my men." Antares spoke, his voice not a shout, but a low, vibrating growl that resonated through the sand, the air, and the very bones of the pirates." We come in peace, but if you want blood, we'll gladly give it to you." He said as he unsheathed Eos from his back.
