The clearing descended into pure, terrifying chaos. The students threw rocks, kicked, and fought with raw survival instinct. In the middle of the melee, an alpha stalker lunged from the side, its razor-sharp teeth snapping down violently.
"Ahhh!" Mia screamed as the wolf's metallic jaws clamped tightly around her lower leg, tearing through her leather pants. She collapsed into the dirt, black blood mixing with her own red blood as she tried to beat the creature off with a rock.
Shonte stood a few feet away, completely paralysed. His frame shook as pure, suffocating terror gripped his mind. He saw Mia screaming in pain. He saw the swarming horde of glass monsters. Suddenly, another massive stalker noticed him, lowering its head and charging directly for his throat.
Shonte was terrified. He closed his eyes, raising his hands in a desperate, instinctual gesture to protect himself.
But his body didn't wait for his mind.
Deep within his chest, the sacred calligraphy seal erupted with a blinding, agonising heat. The ancient pages turned violently, a hot sensation surging through his veins and flowing directly down his right arm.
His body acted entirely on its own. Shonte's hand snapped forward, his index finger pointing directly at the charging pack of stalkers like a barrel of a gun.
BOOM.
An absolute monstrosity of a beam—a massive, roaring torrent of pure blinding white cosmic energy—blasted from his fingertips. The beam was so incredibly massive and powerful that it lit up the entire forest like a mini sun. The kinetic force sheared the grass, pulverised the dirt, and completely vaporised every single monster in its path, clearing an entire hundred-yard line straight through the woods until there was nothing left but smoking ash.
The recoil of the cosmic energy tore through Shonte's body. He fell hard to his knees, his chest burning as if it were on fire. Instantly, a massive, thick torrent of dark red blood started pouring heavily from both of his nostrils, dripping rapidly onto his shirt and dirt below. His vision swam, dark spots dancing at the edges of his eyes.
Before any of the stunned, bruised students could move toward him, a familiar, beautiful golden-white light tore through the air right above the clearing.
A massive, swirling dimensional vortex opened up, and Luxor stepped through. Luxor's eyes were glowing with an intense, deeply protective concern as he surveyed the bleeding Shonte, the injured Mia, and the exhausted group.
"The trial is concluded," Luxor's voice boomed, wrapping around them like a comforting shield. It waved its hand, and a gentle, invisible telekinetic force lifted Mia, Shonte, and the others off the ground. "You have exceeded my expectations, young ones. Now, let us go home."
With a sudden pull, the portal swallowed all twelve students, vanishing from the Whispering Wilds and leaving behind nothing but smoke and ash.

The vortex collapsed behind them, dropping the teenagers heavily onto the polished white marble floor of the common room.
Mia collapsed onto a velvet couch, clutching her torn pants leg. Fresh red blood mixed with the black, greasy fluid of the Obsidian Stalker was soaking through her fingers. Tears were streaming down her face.
"Hold still, Miss Sanchez," Luxor said as he knelt beside the couch, his hands moving with absolute precision. A soft, soothing hum of golden-white light bloomed from his palms, washing over Mia's torn skin. Within seconds, the jagged puncture wounds began to knit back together, leaving behind clean, unblemished olive skin.
"Are you serious right now?!" Elena exploded, her emerald-green eyes flashing with pure rage as she marched straight to him. "You heal her now, but you left us out there to die! We were unarmed! We had to dig a hole and use rocks just to keep us from being eaten alive!"
"My father will hear about this!" Tyler announced, his voice still shaking with residual terror as he tried to clean the dirt off his expensive watch. "You put us in a literal death trap!"
"We almost lost two people tonight, Vale," Malik glared, his massive frame stepping forward aggressively, his jaw clenched tightly. Next to him, Adrian crossed his arms, his sharp grey eyes boring into the teacher with an icy glare matching Malik's. "You said you were our guardian. Slipping out for a 'meeting with the principal' while glass monsters are hunting us isn't guarding."
Luxor completely ignored their outbursts. His pristine posture didn't slip for nearly a second. He stood up from Mia's side and turned his gaze toward the back corner of the room. He didn't offer a single word of defense or explanation.
Instead, he walked straight past the angry crowd, his focus locked entirely on the quietest boy in the room.
Shonte was kneeling at the edge of a marble step, his frame completely rigid. A massive, dark smear of crimson blood was still pouring heavily from his nose, though it had reduced a bit; it still dripped steadily onto his shirt. But he wasn't wiping it away. He was staring directly at the floor, his posture unnaturally still.
"Mr. Weldon," Luxor called out softly, his voice carrying a subtle edge of concern.
Shonte didn't answer. He didn't even blink.
Luxor stepped closer, reaching down and placing a firm hand on Shonte's shoulder. "Shonte. Look at me."
Slowly, Shonte lifted his head. The entire room went dead silent as the other students turned to look. Shonte's eyes were completely terrifyingly blank. The warm, forest-green color was entirely washed out, replaced by a void that looked as if his soul had been completely hollowed out of his body.
"Shonte?" Riri whispered, his body tensing as he took a step forward, a sudden wave of dread hitting his chest. "Hey, what's wrong with him?"
Luxor gripped Shonte's shoulders, shaking him firmly to snap him out of the unconscious state. But Shonte's body was entirely loose, like a heavy ragdoll, when Luxor shook him. Shonte's head just lolled uselessly to the side, his jaw slack, his unblinking, vacant eyes staring at nothing.
A wave of panic washed through Luxor's face. The entity closed its eyes, projecting its consciousness forward, attempting to force its way directly into Shonte's mind to pull his soul back to the surface.
BOOM.
An invisible, mental shockwave violently repelled Luxor. The cosmic guide was violently kicked out of Shonte's subconscious, his physical body stumbling back two full steps across the marble floor as his eyes flared in shock. The rejection from Shonte's mind was horribly strong—and the mental backfire was catastrophic to the human vessel.
Before anyone could touch him, a fresh stream of dark red blood violently burst from both of Shonte's ears, tracking down his neck and staining the collar of his shirt.
Inside his own mind, Shonte knew nothing of the bleeding or the screaming students outside.
He opened his eyes to find himself standing in a vast, infinite void of absolute pitch-black shadow. The only thing visible was a colossal, grand staircase forged from weathered stone that stretched upward into infinity, disappearing into a brilliant, blinding white fog high above.
He was entirely alone. The terror of the cave was gone, replaced by an unearthly, magnetic pull that demanded he climb.
Shonte took a shaky breath and stepped onto the first massive stone step.
Flash.
The moment his sneaker touched the rock, the step illuminated with a brilliant, blinding starlight. Instantly, an overwhelming tidal wave of foreign memories, violent voices, and long-forgotten emotions slammed into his brain.
"Hold the line! It's tearing apart!" a booming voice roared inside his ears.
"The Nexus has fallen...humanity is doomed," another voice wept, a sound of absolute despair.
