Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Kagami Souta

Kagami Souta was a good man—at least, that's what Kagami Rei believed. His father raised him alone after his mother abandoned them; although they never talked much about it, he told him when he felt the time was right. He had a good childhood—his father gave him everything he could, and for that, Rei would be forever grateful. But good things never last forever.

In the middle of the night, the creak of the door opening woke him. Rei opened his eyes and saw a figure entering his room silently.

—Dad…?— he asked, still half-asleep.

His father's silhouette was faintly illuminated by the moonlight.

Souta was holding something in his hand. In the darkness, Rei could barely make out the glint of a kitchen knife before he lunged at him. He managed to move purely on instinct, feeling the air get stuck in his chest as he did everything he could to hold out until a neighbor called the police because of the noise.

He didn't know how much time had passed before the police arrived. There were shouts, blows; it felt like a tornado had gone through the apartment. Before they took him away, Souta was yelling that Rei should have let himself be killed. He also mentioned something about some books, but Rei couldn't remember what.

In the end, he was diagnosed with a mental illness that made him unstable. He spent the last years of his life in a psychiatric facility, where Rei visited him frequently, until he passed away. During that time, Rei continued living in the small apartment they had shared, refusing to go into foster care.

From then on, he began going through his father's belongings in search of the books he had mentioned. He eventually found them, hidden behind a loose panel at the back of a closet. There were several; some caught his attention more than others. In the end, he picked one at random, titled "JJK 0."

The books seemed like pure fantasy. They spoke of a world where curses were born from negative human emotions. To counter them, there were sorcerers who, from the shadows, protected civilians. Rei read those texts over and over again, trying to find something that could explain what had driven his father insane.

Kagami Souta died on December 24, 2017—the same day that, according to those stories, Suguru Geto died. The same day a major incident occurred in Shinjuku and Kyoto. All that time, Rei believed everything his father had written was fantasy, the delusions of a man who had lost himself in a fictional story.

He didn't believe in men who could control space. Nor in monsters capable of adapting to anything, or that a teenager could fight a thousand-year-old being with his bare hands. But he couldn't help but doubt when, after his father's death, he began to see things.

Whether in the streets of Tokyo or even in his own apartment, he started seeing what he could only describe as the curses from the books. He tried to stay calm, though for a moment he thought he might be going insane, just like his father.

When he went to collect his belongings from the psychiatric facility, he found among them one last book, titled "Kagami Souta." As soon as he got home, it was the first thing he opened. This time, it didn't talk about Satoru Gojo or Yuji Itadori. This time, it was about a normal man, in a normal world. A man who died.

Souta had been a Japanese office worker who died, but then opened his eyes again in the "world of Jujutsu Kaisen." He expected adventures, to meet Satoru Gojo, to face Sukuna… but he had no talent. He could barely see curses, and his cursed energy was almost nonexistent. Even so, he didn't give up.

He had a son, hoping that child would have talent for sorcery. When the time came, he would try to take his body. And if he didn't have talent… he would simply kill him and try again with another.

Rei had to stop. Only then did he realize he had been holding his breath.
