Chapter 47 - Familiar Voice

Hajin woke with his ribs whole, which was more than one night of sleep had any business fixing after what the anomaly had done to them.

Whatever the bond had pushed through him while he slept had finished the work without being asked.

They ate most of what the inn had before pushing out into a street already thick with carts, then turned toward the guild to report the clear.

"So," Juna said, walking a half step off his shoulder, "what exactly is a Ranker?"

"You say the word constantly," she added, her ears twitching once, "and I have never heard you say what it means."

He looked at her, since it had genuinely never occurred to him that nobody had explained the guild to the person he kept dragging into gates.

"My fault," he said, steering around a merchant hauling a cart of apples, "ordinary adventurers are mercenaries with worse pay."

"They take the jobs nobody else wants, hunt the small things, then scrape by until something faster finds them," he said.
