Chapter 3 - The City That Watches

The vehicle drifted slowly toward the glowing city.

No one spoke.

Not because they didn't have questions—

But because none of them were ready for the answers.

"…It's too quiet," Nira whispered.

"It's never quiet," Zyro replied. "You just can't hear them yet."

"That is not helping," Arham muttered.

The structures grew larger.

Closer.

Sharper.

They weren't just buildings—

They were… alive.

Pulsing faintly.

Breathing.

"Do you see that?" Lila said softly.

"Yeah," Rayan replied. "It's like the whole place is… watching us."

Zyro didn't respond.

That silence said enough.

"Zyro," Rayan said, voice low, "tell us one thing honestly."

"I always do."

"…Are we welcome here?"

A pause.

Then—

"No."

"Cool," Arham said. "Let's go home."

"Still not possible," Zyro replied.

The vehicle slowed.

Hovering above the city now.

Lights from below shifted—

Forming patterns.

Signals.

"They're communicating," Lila said.

"Yes," Zyro confirmed.

"What are they saying?" Nira asked.

Zyro hesitated.

"…They are deciding."

"Deciding what?" Arham asked.

"…Whether you are worth studying…"

A beat.

"…or destroying."

"OH GREAT," Arham snapped. "Two amazing options!"

"Calm down," Rayan said.

"I am calm! This is my calm voice!"

"No, it's not."

"Okay, fair."

Suddenly—

A sharp pulse hit the vehicle.

Everything flickered.

"What was that?!" Nira shouted.

"Scan wave," Zyro said. "They are analyzing us."

"Can they see us?" Lila asked.

"…Partially."

The cloaking shimmered.

Struggled.

Then stabilized.

"…Define partially," Rayan said.

"They know something is here," Zyro replied.

"Just not exactly what."

"Yet."

"Yet?!" Arham groaned. "Why does everything you say sound like a countdown to death?!"

"Because it is," Zyro said calmly.

"Okay," Lila clapped once. "New rule."

Everyone looked at her.

"We stop panicking," she said.

"Impossible," Arham replied.

"We think," she continued.

"Even more impossible."

"Arham," she glared.

"…Fine. Thinking."

Rayan leaned forward.

"Zyro… what do they want?"

"Control."

"Of what?"

"Everything below the surface."

"…And above?" Nira asked quietly.

Zyro looked at her.

"…Eventually."

Silence.

"So we're not just exploring," Rayan said slowly.

"No," Zyro replied.

"…We're stopping something."

"Yes."

"Why us?" Arham asked.

"Because," Zyro said, "you were not meant to be here."

"That's… not reassuring."

"That is precisely why you matter."

The vehicle suddenly jolted.

"What now?!" Nira said.

"They have locked onto us," Zyro said.

"Wait, WHAT?!" Arham yelled.

Below them—

The city lights intensified.

Multiple shapes launched upward.

Faster than before.

"They found us!" Rayan said.

"Yes," Zyro replied.

"Can we run?" Lila asked.

"We can try."

"TRY?!" Arham repeated.

"Hold on," Zyro said.

The vehicle shot sideways—

Dodging the first incoming shape.

"WOAH!" Lila laughed. "Okay that was kind of fun!"

"FUN?!" Nira snapped. "We're being hunted!"

"Same thing," Lila grinned.

"Three more incoming," Zyro said.

"Of course there are," Arham groaned.

"Left!" Rayan shouted.

Zyro swerved.

A glowing beam missed them by inches.

"…That was too close," Nira whispered.

"Yes," Zyro agreed.

"Zyro, do something!" Rayan said.

"I am."

"Do something MORE!"

"Activating pulse disruptor."

A shockwave burst from the vehicle.

The incoming shapes staggered—

But didn't stop.

"They're adapting," Zyro said.

"OF COURSE THEY ARE!" Arham yelled.

"Guys," Lila said suddenly.

"What?" Nira asked.

"…They're herding us."

Everyone froze.

"What do you mean?" Rayan asked.

"They're not trying to destroy us," Lila said.

"They're pushing us."

"Toward what?" Arham asked.

Ahead—

A massive structure opened.

Like a gate.

Dark.

Deep.

Waiting.

"…Oh no," Nira whispered.

"They want us inside," Rayan said.

"Yes," Zyro confirmed.

"Why would we go there?!" Arham shouted.

"We wouldn't," Zyro said.

"…Unless we have no choice."

The vehicle jerked violently.

"We're losing control," Zyro said.

"What?!"

"They are overriding navigation."

"Fix it!" Nira said.

"I am attempting."

"ATTEMPTING?!"

The vehicle drifted—

Closer to the gate.

"Zyro!" Rayan shouted.

"Manual override engaged."

"Good!"

"…Not working."

"THIS IS HOW WE DIE," Arham said.

"No," Lila replied.

"Then how?"

"We don't."

"Great plan," Nira muttered.

The gate loomed.

Huge.

Endless.

"Zyro…" Rayan said quietly.

"…If we go in there—"

"We enter their domain," Zyro finished.

"And?"

"…We lose all advantage."

"Then don't let it happen!" Arham said.

"I cannot stop it alone."

Silence.

Then Lila spoke.

"Then we help."

Everyone turned to her.

"…How?" Nira asked.

Lila stood up.

The restraints loosened slightly.

"Zyro," she said, "can we control anything manually?"

"Yes."

"Show me."

A panel lit up beside her.

"Rayan, come here," she said.

He hesitated.

Then stood.

"This is a terrible idea," Arham said.

"Best kind," Lila replied.

"Okay," Rayan said, looking at the controls. "What do we do?"

"Improvise," Lila smiled.

"I hate that word," Nira muttered.

"Zyro," Rayan said, "redirect power to propulsion."

"Done."

"Lila—pull that."

She did.

The vehicle shook—

Then surged forward.

"IT'S WORKING!" Arham shouted.

"Not for long," Zyro warned.

The gate was right in front of them now.

"Turn!" Nira yelled.

"I'm trying!" Rayan replied.

The controls resisted.

"They're pushing back!" Lila said.

"Harder!" Rayan shouted.

She pulled with everything she had.

The vehicle tilted—

Barely.

"Come on… come on…" Rayan muttered.

The gate edge passed—

Just inches away.

Then—

They broke free.

Out into open darkness again.

Silence.

Heavy breathing.

"…We did it," Nira whispered.

"Yes," Zyro said.

"…Temporarily."

"Why do you always ruin the moment?" Arham groaned.

"Because," Zyro said quietly…

"…they are not done with you."

Behind them—

The city glowed brighter.

Stronger.

Angrier.

"They're coming again," Lila said.

Rayan looked back.

Determined.

"Then this time," he said…

"…we don't run."

"Excuse me?!" Arham said.

"We came here for a reason," Rayan continued.

"To stop something."

"To understand something."

Nira looked at him.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

Lila smiled.

"I like this version of you."

Arham groaned.

"I'm surrounded by crazy people."

Zyro's eyes glowed brighter.

"…Then prepare," it said.

"For what?" Nira asked.

"For first contact."

The city lights shifted again.

This time—

Not aggressive.

Not chaotic.

Organized.

A single figure rose from below.

Slow.

Calm.

Powerful.

"…That's not an interceptor," Rayan said.

"No," Zyro replied.

"…That is a leader."

The figure stopped in front of them.

And then—

It looked directly at them.

Not at the vehicle.

Not around it.

At them.

"…It can see us," Nira whispered.

"Yes," Zyro said.

The figure raised its hand.

The vehicle froze.

Completely.

No movement.

No control.

"…Zyro?" Rayan said.

"…We are no longer in control," Zyro replied.

The figure spoke.

Not in sound—

But in their minds.

"You do not belong here."

Nira gasped.

"Did you hear that?"

"Yes," everyone said at once.

"Surface beings…"

"…Surface beings?" Arham repeated.

"Why have you come?"

Rayan swallowed.

Then spoke.

"We're not here to fight."

Silence.

Then—

"All who come… say the same."

Lila stepped forward.

"We're here to understand."

The figure paused.

"Understanding… leads to fear."

"Then we'll face it," Rayan said.

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Then—

The figure moved closer.

Too close.

"…If we die," Arham whispered…

"…I just want to say I was right."

"Shut up," Nira whispered back.

The figure's voice echoed again—

"You have already crossed the line…"

The city behind it pulsed.

"…from which none return."

The vehicle doors unlocked.

"…Zyro?" Rayan said.

"…This is it," Zyro replied.

The door slowly opened.

Dark water beyond.

And something unseen…

Waiting.
