Chapter 3 - chapter three

"This is the place, sir."

Gerald's voice was careful as he spoke.

His eyes flicked up to the rearview mirror for the briefest second, catching the gaze of the man seated behind him.

The moment their eyes met, Gerald looked away immediately.

A subtle swallow followed.

Even after years of working for him, the weight of that gaze never got easier to bear.

"Should I inform them of your arrival, sir?" he asked.

Silence.

The man in the backseat didn't respond.

He sat still, one arm resting against the door, his posture relaxed in a way that wasn't comforting, but calm. Everything about him was calm.

His gaze was fixed on the house ahead.

The house was Large, impressive and carefully maintained.

But beneath the polished exterior, there was something else.

Something hollow and unremarkable.

His expression didn't change.

Gerald waited.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Still nothing.

He had just opened his mouth to speak again when the rear passenger door of the house opened.

Both men noticed at the same time.

A young woman stepped out.

She hesitated at the entrance, her hand lingering briefly on the door as if something inside was holding her back.

Then she stepped forward.Slowly and carefully.

Like someone walking away from something she wasn't ready to leave behind.

Or perhaps...

Something she couldn't bear to face.

The man in the backseat stilled.

His eyes sharpened slightly.

He knew her, well not personally.

But he had seen her face before.

A photograph.

Neatly presented and carefully chosen.

Lily.

She paused at the top of the steps and turned back.

Her gaze lingered on the house.

There was something in her expression.

Not hesitation or regret.

Something heavier.

Sadness.

Deep, quiet and suffocating.

The kind that didn't disappear easily.

Then she turned away and began to walk.

She didn't look around.

Didn't check if anyone was watching.

She simply walked past the gates, past the black car parked not too far from the entrance.

Past him.

Her presence was brief.

But it was enough.

The man's eyes followed her until she disappeared down the street.

Then...

"Follow her."

Gerald blinked.

For a second, he thought he had misheard.

"Sir?" he asked, glancing at the mirror again.

"Follow her," the man repeated calmly.

No hesitation or explanation.

Gerald didn't question him again.

He started the engine.

The car moved smoothly, keeping a careful distance as they trailed behind Lily.

Inside the car, silence settled once more.

But this time it was different.

The man's gaze remained fixed ahead, watching her every move.

She walked for a while before finally raising her hand to stop a taxi.

Gerald slowed the car instinctively.

They watched as she got in and the taxi pulled away.

"Stay on it," came the quiet instruction.

Gerald nodded and followed.

The city moved around them in a blur of motion and noise.

Lily's taxi weaved through traffic, turning corners, passing streets that slowly shifted from quiet residential areas into busier parts of the city.

Inside the black car, none of it mattered.

The man in the backseat watched everything with a quiet intensity.

Not the city or the roads but her.

He had been told about her.

Given details about background, name and face.

But this...this was different.

This was real and she wasn't what he had expected.

There was no excitement in her movements.

No curiosity or anticipation, only tension and unease.

Her shoulders were slightly hunched, her hands clasped tightly in her lap as she stared out the window.

She looked like someone running.

But not fast enough or far enough.

After some time, the taxi finally slowed.

It stopped near a modest hotel.

It was not luxurious or particularly impressive.

Just enough to disappear in.

Gerald parked at a distance.

They watched as Lily stepped out, paid the driver, and walked inside without hesitation.

The doors closed behind her and then silence came

Minutes passed.

Five, ten and then fifteen.

Gerald shifted slightly in his seat.

He wasn't used to this. Waiting and watching.

It wasn't how his boss operated.

Decisions were always quick, precise and final.

But today, this was different and unusual.

He glanced at the mirror again.

The man hadn't moved.

His gaze remained fixed on the hotel entrance, his expression unreadable.

If anything he looked more focused.

As if he were waiting for something or someone.

Gerald hesitated before speaking.

"Sir… should we..."

The hotel doors opened and both men looked up instantly.

Lily stepped out and this time—

She looked different.

The shift was subtle but unmistakable.

Her movements were slower now

Her shoulders slumped slightly, as though whatever hope had carried her inside had been stripped away completely.

Her eyes...

Even from a distance, they told the story of disappointment and frustration and something dangerously close to despair.

She had gone in looking for something.

Help?

Safety?

perhaps a solution and she hadn't found it.

The man in the backseat noticed everything.

The way she paused just outside the entrance.

The way she looked around, as if unsure where to go next.

The way her hand tightened around her bag.

There was no plan only desperation.

"Wait," he said quietly.

Gerald nodded immediately.

They stayed where they were watching.

Lily didn't move for a few seconds.

Then she started walking again with no direction or destination.

Just...Away.

"Follow her," the man said again.

This time, Gerald didn't hesitate at all.

The car moved forward.

The city had begun to change.

The light was softer now.

The sun dipping lower and stretching shadows across the streets.

Lily walked along the sidewalk, her pace uneven.

She didn't notice the car behind her.

Didn't notice anything at all.

Her thoughts were too loud and overwhelming.

Inside the car, the man watched her carefully.

Every step.

Every pause.

Every flicker of emotion that crossed her face.

She had run.

That much was clear.

But she hadn't thought it through.

She had nowhere to go.

No one to rely on and yet...

She had still chosen to leave.

A faint shift crossed his expression.

Not quite approval or quite interest.

Something in between.

Something unfamiliar.

Gerald noticed it but just barely and it unsettled him.

Because in all the years he had worked for him he had never seen that look before.

Never.

The car slowed slightly as Lily paused again, standing at the edge of a quiet street.

She looked around lost, completely lost.

For a moment, it seemed like she might turn back.

But she didn't.

Instead, she kept walking further.

Further away from everything she knew.

The man leaned back slightly in his seat, his gaze never leaving her.

This was not how things were supposed to go.

She was supposed to stay. to accept and comply, that was why she had been chosen.

But instead she ran and now...

He was following her.

A corner of his mind registered the irony.

But he didn't stop.

Didn't turn back.

Didn't give the order to leave.

Instead he watched.

Because something about this...About her had disrupted the order he was used to and he wanted to understand why.

Up ahead, Lily slowed again.

This time, her steps faltered.

Just for a second but it was enough.

The man noticed.

He noticed everything.

"She won't last long like this," Gerald said carefully, before he could stop himself.

Silence followed.

For a moment, Gerald thought he had overstepped.

Then...

"No," the man said quietly.

His voice was calm and certain.

"She won't."

His gaze remained fixed on Lily as she continued walking.

Alone and unaware.

Running from something she couldn't escape.

And for reasons he hadn't yet decided.

He wasn't ready to stop her.

Not yet.
