Chapter 8 - ALTER - CH 1.8 - TO REST WITH A PLEDGE

AK and Mike were on their way to Mike's kingdom after spending several days traveling together. The journey had been long and exhausting, but both of them were relieved to finally be approaching their destination. As the kingdom came into view, AK looked at the massive walls and towers surrounding it. The streets beyond the gates were filled with people, merchants, soldiers, and children. Mike looked at the kingdom with a smile and said, "Finally... we're home." AK looked at him and smiled slightly before replying, "You really missed this place, didn't you?" Mike laughed and said, "More than you know."

As soon as they entered the kingdom, Mike's sisters noticed them. One of them immediately ran toward them, shouting, "Mike!" She rushed over and hugged her brother tightly. "You're finally back! I've been waiting for you for days!" Mike laughed as he hugged her back and said, "Yeah, yeah, I'm back." She then noticed AK standing beside him and her expression immediately became happier. "AK! You're back too!" AK gave her a tired smile and replied, "Yeah. It's good to see you again." She smiled warmly at both of them before taking them back home.

That evening, the three of them sat together and ate dinner. After everything they had experienced during their journey, the simple warmth of a home-cooked meal felt strangely comforting to AK. They began talking about their adventure, and Mike's sister listened with curiosity as the two of them explained some of the things they had encountered. She looked at them in disbelief and asked, "You two really went through all of that?" Mike laughed and replied, "That's only part of it." AK smiled and added, "There are plenty of things we haven't even told you yet." The three of them laughed together, enjoying the peaceful moment.

After dinner, both AK and Mike were tired from their journey. Mike looked at AK and said, "Tomorrow, I'll show you around the kingdom." AK looked at him curiously and asked, "Why?" Mike smiled and answered, "Because if you're going to stay here for a while, you should know the place. It'll make it easier for you to settle in." AK nodded and replied, "Sounds good." For the first time in a long while, AK felt like he might actually have a place where he could rest.

The next day, Mike took AK around the kingdom. As they walked through the streets, Mike pointed toward different parts of the city and explained what they were. "That's the main training ground, and over there is the marketplace. The castle is further ahead," Mike explained. AK looked around at the peaceful kingdom and said, "I could get used to this place." Mike smiled and replied, "That's what I was hoping you'd say." They continued walking while talking about their adventure, both of them relaxed and happy to finally have some peace.

Suddenly, the atmosphere around them changed. People began moving toward the main road, while the soldiers immediately straightened their posture. Mike looked toward the approaching group and said, "The King is coming." A large group of guards appeared, surrounding the King as he walked through the kingdom to inspect the area. As the King approached, everyone around them bowed. Mike immediately bowed his head, and AK quickly followed. The King walked past them without saying anything or even acknowledging AK. He simply continued forward with his guards.

AK slowly raised his head and watched the King disappear into the distance. For some reason, a deep sadness suddenly filled his heart. He couldn't explain why, but something about being ignored made him feel as if he didn't matter. He had traveled so far, fought so many battles, lost people he cared about, and left his family behind, yet he was still nowhere near the level he wanted to reach. AK clenched his fist and thought, I can't stay like this. I need to become stronger.

After a moment of silence, AK turned toward Mike and said, "Mike." Mike looked at him and asked, "What?" AK looked at him seriously and said, "Teach me. Teach me everything you know about fighting and magic." Mike stared at him for a moment before giving him a small smile. "I was wondering when you'd ask."

Later that day, Mike took AK deep into a quiet part of the forest. They reached an empty clearing surrounded by enormous trees, far away from the kingdom where nobody would disturb them. Mike stood across from AK and said, "Before we start, you need to understand something about magic." AK listened carefully as Mike continued, "Every person has an affinity for a particular type of magic. My affinity is fire magic." Mike raised his hand, and a small flame appeared above his palm. AK looked at it with curiosity and asked, "So you can't use other types of magic?" Mike shook his head and replied, "Not normally. Since my affinity is fire, I can't simply control water, grass, earth, or other elements."

AK nodded as he thought about what Mike had explained. After a moment, he asked, "Then which magic is the most dangerous?" Mike smiled slightly and replied, "That's the wrong question. No magic is automatically the strongest. Fire can be dangerous, but so can water, earth, wind, or any other type of magic. What matters is the person using it." AK looked at him carefully as Mike continued, "A weak magic can become terrifying in the hands of someone who knows how to use it properly. A strong magic can also become useless if its user doesn't know how to control it." AK nodded in understanding and said, "So it's not about which magic is strongest. It's about how much the user can develop and amplify it." Mike smiled and replied, "Exactly."

AK then looked toward the swords they had brought with them and said, "Okay, then let's practice sword fighting." Mike grinned and replied, "Finally."

The two of them stood several meters apart, each holding a sword. Mike looked at AK and asked, "Ready?" AK tightened his grip and nodded. "Come at me." Without wasting another second, AK rushed forward and swung his sword. Mike blocked the attack with ease. AK immediately attacked again, changing his angle and aiming toward Mike's side, but Mike stepped away and blocked the next strike as well. AK continued attacking, but every strike was either blocked or avoided. The difference between them was obvious. AK wasn't even close to Mike's level.

Still, AK refused to stop. His breathing became heavier, and his arms began to ache, but he continued. "Again!" he shouted. Mike looked at him and asked, "You're sure?" AK raised his sword again and replied, "Again!" The training continued for hours. AK attacked repeatedly while Mike defended himself and occasionally corrected AK's movements. The sun slowly began to disappear behind the trees, and the forest became darker. Eventually, AK's body became exhausted, and his sword began to feel heavier in his hands.

Just as AK was about to continue, Mike's sister appeared from between the trees carrying something. She looked at the two exhausted fighters and asked, "You two are still training?" Mike laughed and replied, "Apparently." She walked over and handed them both a glass of juice. "Drink this. You both look exhausted." AK accepted the glass and said, "Thanks," before quickly drinking it. The refreshing drink helped him recover some of his e nergy. Mike laughed and said, "You really needed that." AK wiped his mouth and replied, "I guess I did."

After resting for a short while, AK picked up his sword again and said, "Let's continue." Mike looked at him with disbelief and replied, "You're seriously obsessed with getting stronger." AK gave him a small smile and said, "Maybe." They continued practicing for a little longer, but eventually Mike lowered his sword and said, "That's enough for today. We'll continue tomorrow." AK nodded and replied, "Okay." Mike then began walking back toward the house, but before leaving, he turned around and said, "Don't stay out too late." AK looked at him and answered, "I won't."

After Mike left, AK remained alone in the clearing. Night had completely fallen, and the forest had become silent. AK sat beneath a tree and looked up at the moon shining through the branches. His expression slowly became more serious as memories of everything he had lost returned to his mind. He quietly thought, I lost my friend... and I'm far away from my family. I don't even know when I'll see them again.

AK lowered his head for a moment, but then his sadness slowly turned into determination. He looked toward the moon and thought, But I'll become stronger. He remembered his father and smiled faintly. Dad... one day, I'll surpass you.

AK stood up and picked up his sword again. Even though his body was already exhausted, he began practicing once more under the moonlight. One swing became two, two became ten, and ten became hundreds. Every strike carried his frustration, his pain, and his determination. His arms hurt, his hands trembled, and his breathing became heavier, but he refused to stop.

The moon continued to shine over the silent forest as AK trained alone. He knew he still had a long way to go, and he knew there were countless people stronger than him. But that night, AK made a promise to himself. He would become stronger, no matter how difficult the path became. He would surpass his limits, find his way back to the people he loved, and one day, he would stand proudly beside—or even above—the strongest people in the world.

And under the cold moonlight, AK continued to swing his sword.
