Chapter 6 - Jin-Sensei

The tension did not disappear.

It settled.

Compressed into something quieter, but still present.

Kai returned to position.

Mateo did the same.

Luna remained steady.

Jin-Sensei stepped forward.

"Continue."

That was all he said.

No comment on what had just happened.

No warning.

No correction.

Training resumed.

Kai adjusted into stance again.

Lower this time.

More controlled.

Not correct, but closer.

His legs strained.

His balance wavered slightly.

He held it anyway.

Jin-Sensei walked past him.

No correction.

Kai noticed that immediately.

Before, he had been stopped.

Adjusted.

Now, nothing.

Jin-Sensei moved to Mateo.

A small correction to his hand position.

Precise.

Minimal.

Then to Luna.

A slight shift of her stance.

Again, minimal.

Controlled.

Then he stepped back.

Watching.

Kai felt it.

The difference.

He was not being trained.

He was being observed.

The realization settled slowly.

Jin-Sensei was not trying to help him improve.

He was waiting.

Waiting to see what Kai would do on his own.

Kai clenched his jaw slightly.

Fine.

He would show him.

He adjusted his stance again.

Lowered his center.

Shifted his weight.

It felt unstable.

He held it anyway.

Seconds passed.

Then more.

His legs began to shake.

He forced them still.

Do not break.

Do not show weakness.

Jin-Sensei said nothing.

The rest of the gym continued.

Other squads moved through drills.

Clean.

Efficient.

Controlled.

Kai stayed in place.

Time stretched.

His muscles burned.

His balance slipped.

He corrected it.

Barely.

Then lost it completely.

He stepped out of stance.

Just for a moment.

That was enough.

Jin-Sensei spoke.

"Reset."

Kai stepped back into position.

Breathing slightly heavier now.

He waited.

For correction.

For instruction.

For something.

Nothing came.

Jin-Sensei watched him.

That was all.

Kai felt irritation rise again.

"You're not going to say anything?"

The words came out before he stopped them.

Mateo did not react.

Luna glanced once.

Then forward again.

Jin-Sensei looked at Kai.

"What do you expect?"

Kai frowned.

"You're the sensei."

"Correct."

"So teach."

The word came out sharper than intended.

Jin-Sensei did not react to the tone.

"You are not ready to be taught," he said.

Kai stared at him.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does," Jin-Sensei replied. "You lack the foundation required to understand instruction."

Kai's frustration pushed forward.

"Then give me the foundation."

Jin-Sensei held his gaze.

"No."

The answer was immediate.

Final.

Kai felt it hit.

Hard.

"Why not?"

"Because you do not yet understand what you are asking for."

Kai shook his head.

"That doesn't matter."

"It does," Jin-Sensei said. "If you are given instruction you cannot process, you will imitate without understanding. That creates bad habits. Bad habits are harder to remove than ignorance."

Kai clenched his fists.

"So I just stand here and do nothing?"

"You observe," Jin-Sensei said. "You attempt. You fail. You adjust."

Kai exhaled sharply.

"That's not teaching."

"It is," Jin-Sensei replied. "You simply do not recognize it."

Silence followed.

Kai looked away for a moment.

Across the gym, Eagle Squad moved through drills again.

Clean.

Precise.

They understood what they were doing.

He did not.

He looked back at Jin-Sensei.

"You're not even trying to help me."

The statement was direct.

Jin-Sensei did not deny it.

"I am observing you."

Kai frowned.

"That's it?"

"That is enough."

Kai felt something tighten in his chest.

"How am I supposed to improve if you don't help me?"

Jin-Sensei answered without hesitation.

"You improve by proving you can."

Kai stared at him.

That was it.

No encouragement.

No reassurance.

No explanation beyond that.

Just expectation.

Kai looked down at his stance.

Still wrong.

Still unstable.

Still behind.

He looked back up.

"So what happens if I can't?"

Jin-Sensei's response was calm.

"Then you will not remain here."

The words settled.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

Kai understood.

There was no safety.

No guarantee.

No patience.

Just evaluation.

Constant.

Unforgiving.

Kai took a slow breath.

Then another.

He adjusted his stance again.

Lower.

More controlled.

Still imperfect.

But held longer this time.

Jin-Sensei watched.

Silent.

Unmoving.

Seconds passed.

Then more.

Kai's legs strained again.

He held it.

This time, he did not break immediately.

He lasted longer.

Not enough.

But longer.

Jin-Sensei spoke.

"He can stay."

Kai looked up slightly.

Jin-Sensei's gaze did not change.

"For now."

That was all.

No approval.

No acknowledgment of effort.

No recognition of improvement.

Just permission.

Temporary.

Conditional.

Kai felt it clearly.

This was not acceptance.

This was not belief.

This was tolerance.

He was being allowed to remain.

Nothing more.

He looked at Mateo.

No reaction.

At Luna.

Still observing.

At Jin-Sensei.

Unchanged.

Kai exhaled slowly.

His chest felt tight.

Not from effort.

From something else.

He had entered the club.

He had been placed in a squad.

He had not been rejected.

But he had not been accepted either.

He understood that now.

He was not part of this.

Not yet.

He was something being evaluated.

Something temporary.

Something that could be removed at any time.

Kai lowered his stance again.

Held it.

Longer this time.

He did not look away.
