Chapter 106 - A Gift (1)

Chapter 91:

Night had deepened around the fight club by the time Elijah finally settled onto the bench along the wall. With his legs stretched out before him and his back resting against the cold surface, he allowed his breathing to slow while the events of the day replayed through his mind.

The fights had been entertaining, the training had produced noticeable progress, and the hours he had spent walking through his territory with Tristan had reminded him why he had chosen this path in the first place. He was not merely gathering power for himself.

He was building something that could survive beyond his own lifetime, something strong enough to protect the people he cared about even after he was gone.

Tristan had left an hour earlier, claiming that he needed to find the two women in the red dresses before they disappeared into the night. Elijah had watched him leave with a smile he could not quite suppress.

Tristan was utterly incorrigible, but there was something admirable about the man's willingness to pursue what he wanted without worrying about the judgment of others. He knew what brought him pleasure, and he had no interest in pretending otherwise.

That kind of freedom was something Elijah occasionally envied, even though he would never willingly admit it.

The training floor had nearly emptied when Kai appeared from the opposite side of the warehouse.

His dark purple aura flickered faintly around him as he approached, and the casual dark shirt and trousers he wore made him look almost like an ordinary young man instead of the second-in-command of a growing criminal organization.

His blue eyes remained bright despite the late hour, and a faint smile rested on his face.

"Enjoying the quiet?" Kai asked as he lowered himself onto the bench beside Elijah.

He stretched his legs forward and leaned his head against the wall, looking across the empty ring where the lights had already been dimmed.

Elijah nodded. "Sometimes it's nice when nobody needs anything from me. There is no fighting, no planning, and no problem waiting to be solved. I can simply sit here and think."

Kai remained silent for several seconds before his expression became more thoughtful.

"I've been thinking about something," he said. "It's about the way you've been treating people since we took control of this territory."

Elijah turned toward him. "What about it?"

"I used to think you were doing all those small acts of kindness for strategic reasons. You wanted the residents to trust us, so you were building goodwill and creating a loyal population that would be less likely to turn against us if something went wrong."

Kai paused briefly before continuing.

"That probably is part of it because you're not stupid, and you understand how power works in a place like this. However, I don't think that's the real reason you help them."

Elijah raised an eyebrow.

"The real reason is much simpler," Kai continued. "You help people because you refuse to become the kind of person who can walk past suffering when you have the ability to stop it. You respect yourself too much to become cruel simply because cruelty is convenient. Whether anyone thanks you or remembers what you did does not really matter to you. What matters is that you can look at yourself afterward and know you did what you believed was right."

The words struck closer than Elijah expected.

For several moments, he stared across the empty training floor while the distant hum of the building's machinery filled the silence.

"You're not wrong," Elijah eventually admitted. "I don't help people because I love everyone in this district, and I don't do it because I expect something from them later. I help because I wouldn't be able to respect myself if I simply ignored suffering that I could have prevented."

His red eyes narrowed slightly as he considered his own words.

"My self-respect demands that I act with decency, even when that decency provides no benefit to me. I suppose you could call that kindness, but I don't see it that way. It's simply the price I pay to remain someone I can live with."

Kai nodded slowly.

"And the people you actually care about?" he asked. "The ones you would burn the world for?"

Something changed in Elijah's expression. The relaxed warmth disappeared, replaced by the cold certainty Kai had seen countless times before.

"That's different."

Elijah's gaze remained fixed on the empty ring.

"My family, my Vice Leaders, and the women I will someday choose to love and protect are different. Those people are mine, and I would kill anyone who threatened them. I would tear down cities, destroy gangs, and burn everything in my path if that was what it took to keep them safe."

His voice remained calm despite the severity of his words.

"The kingdom exists to serve the King, Kai. The King does not exist to serve the kingdom. The people in this territory receive my decency because I refuse to be cruel, but they do not receive my devotion. That belongs to a much smaller circle."

Kai laughed quietly, shaking his head.

"Most people would try to make that sound nicer. They would talk about how every life matters equally and how they are sacrificing everything for the greater good. You just say exactly what you believe."

Elijah gave a faint smile.

"Lying about who I am would be a form of self-betrayal. I've spent too long becoming someone I can respect to throw that away for comforting lies."

He leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows against his knees.

"The people here deserve to know what I am and what I am not. I will protect them from the worst this district has to offer because that is the responsibility of someone who rules them, and because I refuse to let chaos consume something under my protection. However, I won't pretend that they matter to me in the same way you matter to me, or Amy matters to me, or the people I love matter to me. Pretending otherwise would only make my words meaningless."

Kai considered that for a moment before reaching over and clapping Elijah firmly on the shoulder.

"That's why I follow you."

Elijah looked at him.

"It's not because you're the strongest, smartest, or most strategic person I've ever met," Kai continued. "It's because you know exactly who you are, and you don't hide behind excuses. Most people spend their entire lives running from themselves. They create convenient lies and hide behind them whenever reality becomes uncomfortable. You don't do that."

Elijah accepted the words with a quiet nod.

The two friends remained seated together for several minutes, allowing the silence of the empty warehouse to settle around them. Then footsteps approached from the corridor.

Elijah looked up as Mai entered the room, her purple hair falling loosely around her shoulders and her dark purple eyes shining beneath the dim overhead lights. She wore a simple dress that suited her well, and her expression carried the impatience of someone who had already waited longer than she intended.

"Are you two finished with your philosophical discussion?" Mai asked. "We were supposed to be going to dinner, and I'm hungry."

Kai rolled his eyes while Elijah stood and stretched his arms above his head.

"We're finished. Sorry for keeping you waiting."

Mai waved dismissively and headed toward the exit, with Kai immediately following.

"You two could spend three hours talking about absolutely nothing and still somehow find something to argue about."

Elijah fell into step beside them.

"Before we go, I should apologize that Kai is coming along on our date. He seems convinced that I'm going to steal his little cousin away from him."
