Chapter 77 (2)
Daniel walked to the window and looked out at the dark streets below.
His reflection stared back at him, ghostly in the glass.
"You want to take over the south side," Daniel said.
"Fine. Take it. Those fools were never going to last anyway. They've been running on fear and desperation for years. Someone was going to eat them eventually. Might as well be you."
He turned from the window.
"But you want this territory too. The north side. My territory." His voice was flat. "And you want it without a war."
"Yes."
Daniel's jaw tightened. "Why should I give it to you?"
Elijah met his eyes. "Because if we fight—if the Blackwater Syndicate and the Azura gang go to war—people are going to die. Your people. My people. Good people who trusted us to protect them. And in the end, even if one of us wins, the other will be too weak to hold what they've taken. The other gangs in the 9th will see us bleeding and move in. We'll lose everything we've built."
He took a step closer.
"I don't want that. I don't think you want that either."
Daniel was silent for a long moment.
Sylvia set her wine glass down on the coffee table and stood up.
Her honey-colored eyes moved between her brother and Elijah, her expression thoughtful.
"He's right," she said quietly. "If we fight, we both lose. The other gangs in the 9th have been waiting for someone to slip. If we bleed, they'll tear us apart."
Daniel's hands clenched at his sides. "So what do you suggest? That I just hand over my territory? That I kneel to him?"
"No," Elijah said. "I'm not asking you to kneel."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"I'm asking you to fight me."
The words hung in the air.
"Not a war," Elijah continued. "Not a battle between our gangs. Just you and me. One fight. Winner takes the other's territory. The loser kneels and becomes their subordinate."
Daniel stared at him. "You want to decide the fate of both our gangs on a single fight?"
"Yes."
"That's insane."
"Maybe." Elijah's voice was calm. "But it's better than a war. No one else has to die. No families have to lose their sons and daughters. Just you and me. One fight. One winner."
Daniel was quiet. His honey-colored eyes searched Elijah's face, looking for the lie, the trap, the hidden blade.
He's thinking about it. He's weighing the risks. His people against mine. His strength against mine. His future against mine.
He's a smart man. He knows that even if he wins a war, he loses. The cost would be too high. The other gangs in the 9th would never let him recover.
But he's also proud. He's been leading the Blackwater Syndicate for years. He's not going to kneel to someone just because they walked into his penthouse and asked nicely.
So I need to give him something. A reason to accept. A reason that doesn't make him look weak.
Daniel turned to his sister.
"Sylvia," he said. "Would you mind marrying him?"
The room went still.
Sylvia's honey-colored eyes widened.
Her cheeks flushed just slightly, just enough for Elijah to notice.
She looked at her brother, then at Elijah, then back at her brother.
"What?" she said.
Daniel's expression didn't change. "You heard me. If I'm going to risk everything on a single fight if I'm going to put the fate of our gang in the hands of one man I want something in return. Something that ensures our family's future no matter what happens."
He turned to Elijah.
"Here's my counteroffer. We fight. Winner takes the other's territory. But no matter who wins, you marry my sister."
Elijah's red eyes narrowed.
He's playing chess, not checkers.
If I win, I take his territory. But I also marry his sister. That means he still has a connection to power. His family is still in the game. He can advise his sister. Influence her. Through her, influence me.
And if he wins if he takes my territory and I kneel to him he still has me bound to his family through marriage.
It's brilliant, really. He's turning a potential loss into a strategic advantage either way.
Elijah looked at Sylvia.
She was watching him, her honey-colored eyes unreadable.
Her cheeks were still flushed, but her expression was calm, controlled.
She didn't look surprised by her brother's suggestion.
She looked like she had been expecting it.
She knew. Or she suspected. Maybe she even suggested it.
And if I agree—if I marry her—I gain something too. A connection to the Blackwater Syndicate. Information about their operations, their weaknesses, their secrets. A spy in their inner circle.
Not that I would use her like that. Not intentionally. But the possibility would always be there. Daniel would know that. He would know that I could use his sister against him if I wanted to.
But he would also know that she could use me against myself. That she could learn my secrets, my weaknesses, my plans. That she could report back to him.
It's a balance. A check. A way of ensuring that neither of us can betray the other without consequences.
He's not just offering me a fight. He's offering me an alliance. A way to bind our gangs together so that neither of us can destroy the other without destroying ourselves.
It's smart, And it might be exactly what I need.
Elijah looked at Daniel.
"One week," Elijah said. "We fight one week from today. Just you and me in a ring."
Daniel's honey-colored eyes held his. "And the marriage?"
"If I win, I marry your sister. If you win, I still marry your sister."
Daniel nodded slowly. "Agreed."
Sylvia let out a breath. Her cheeks were still flushed, but she was smiling now—a small, private smile that Elijah couldn't quite read.
Tristan's purple eyes were wide. Aurora's blue eyes were narrowed. Neither of them spoke. They just stood behind Elijah, their Ki flickering, their hands ready.
Daniel stepped forward and extended his hand.
Elijah took it.
Their grips were firm, equal, neither man trying to dominate the other.
They held for a moment, their eyes locked, and then they released.
"A week," Daniel said.
"A week," Elijah repeated.
He turned and walked toward the door.
Tristan and Aurora fell into step behind him.
The Blackwater Syndicate members watched them go, their hands still on their weapons, their eyes still hard.
Sylvia's voice stopped him at the threshold.
"Red Eye."
Elijah turned.
She was standing by the window now, her honey-colored eyes catching the light, her silhouette framed against the dark sky behind her. Her dress clung to her body, and in the dim light, she looked like something out of a dream.
"I'm looking forward to our wedding," she said.
Elijah didn't answer. He just nodded once and walked out the door.
The car was quiet on the drive back to the bar.
Tristan was behind the wheel, his purple eyes fixed on the road, his jaw tight.
Aurora sat in the passenger seat, her silver hair loose, her blue eyes staring out the window.
Elijah sat in the back, his red eyes closed, his breathing slow and steady.
"You're really going to marry her?" Aurora asked.
"I'm going to fight her brother," Elijah said. "The marriage is just insurance."
"It's not just insurance," Tristan said. His voice was tight. "It's a trap. Daniel Blackwater isn't giving you his sister because she likes you. He's giving you his sister because he wants to control you."
"I know."
"Then why agree to it?"
Elijah opened his eyes. "Because it's better than a war."
Tristan was silent for a moment. Then he shook his head and focused on the road.
Aurora turned in her seat, her blue eyes meeting Elijah's in the rearview mirror. "What about Lisa?"
Elijah's jaw tightened. "I'll deal with that later."
Aurora studied him for a moment, then turned back to the window.
The car drove on through the dark streets of the 9th District, past the abandoned buildings and the broken streetlights, past the corners where drug dealers stood in the shadows and the shops that were closed and locked and forgotten.
A screen flashed in the corner of Elijah's vision.
