Chapter 159 - Tono Demons

Chapter 159: Tono Demons

Over the following days, Kobe Hikaru's life settled into a rare, rhythmic tranquility, cycling smoothly between cultivation and deepening his bonds with his artifacts.

The favorability of Yura of the Hair and the venomous flood-dragon scale in his possession steadily advanced. The dark priestess Tsubaki's prayer beads had just begun to open their spiritual connection to him. Beyond those, he diligently tended to the Black Pearl Agate, the Shikon Jewel, and the fragment of the Sacred Tree acquired from Inuyasha.

Yet, in this blood-soaked Sengoku era, peace was a fragile illusion, never destined to endure.

Night had fallen heavily over the shrine.

Having concluded their quiet, mutual intimacy for the evening, Hikaru sat cross-legged in the center of the main hall. Tonight, the demonic blade Muramasa did not rest across his lap; instead, a simple bamboo basin filled with pristine spring water sat before him. The late autumn wind slipped through the narrow gaps in the shoji screens, carrying a biting chill that whispered of the coming winter.

Kikyo sat opposite him, a picture of serene grace in her crisp white kosode and crimson hakama.

In the adjacent quarters, the young shrine maidens Momiji and Botan had long since drifted into deep slumber. Naoe Kanetsugu was asleep as well. The captive warrior was no longer bound to a wooden pillar like a common criminal, but she remained strictly confined to a side room. A glowing sealing talisman, inscribed personally by Kikyo, secured the sliding door. Escape was an absolute impossibility.

The quiet isolation of the shrine wrapped around Hikaru and Kikyo. Though they had not yet taken the final, most intimate step, their connection thrived in the spaces between words. A lingering gaze, the warm press of intertwined fingers, the briefest brush of skin against skin—for now, it was enough. Until Hikaru achieved true, complete resurrection from his undead state, they mutually agreed to halt at this precipice. The ultimate union would wait for the perfect, unblemished moment.

The silence of the hall was absolute.

Then, without warning, it shattered.

Inside the bamboo basin, the placid water convulsed. No wind touched the surface, yet violent ripples tore across it, thrashing and vibrating as if brought to a sudden, rolling boil. Miraculously, not a single drop breached the bamboo rim.

It was Fear.

The collective force field of Yao Qi that bound The Twenty-three Demons across three provinces was experiencing a catastrophic disruption. The spiritual network rang out in Hikaru's mind like a massive temple bell being struck with desperate, frantic force.

"My Lord! General!"

The chaotic ripples smoothed out, reorganizing into a frantic image. The shrill, panicked voice of the Tanuki Spirit exploded from the watery depths.

Kikyo's hand stilled over her bow. Hikaru lifted his gaze, meeting her questioning eyes with a brief, reassuring nod. He reached out, pressing his fingertips against the trembling water. Closing his eyes, he plunged his consciousness directly into the spiritual link.

Time stretched and compressed in the dark void of his mind. Slowly, twenty-three distorted faces materialized from the gloom. These were the loyal members of his vassal network, The Twenty-three Demons.

However, the sight that greeted him was a massacre.

Seventeen of the twenty-three bore gruesome injuries. The Tanuki Spirit's normally comical, round face was marred by a brutal claw mark that tore from its forehead down to its chin. Its fur was singed to a crisp black, and its beady eyes bulged with bloodshot terror. Beside it, the Kappa's sturdy back shell was a mess of jagged, crisscrossing fissures, leaking dark fluid. The Hitotsume-kozo's singular, massive eye was swollen shut, reduced to a bruised, weeping slit.

The lesser demons fared even worse. Some were missing entire limbs, their stumps poorly cauterized. Others shivered violently, half their bodies encased in jagged, unmelting ice, while a few sported cleanly sliced ears and deep lacerations. Even the little half-demon fox, though physically intact, slumped lethargically in the spiritual space. Its Yao Qi was drained to a dangerously shallow puddle. Had it not been for the continuous influx of external Fear sustaining it, the fox would have perished.

As for the six uninjured demons, their survival wasn't a mark of strength—they were simply the ones who had fled the fastest, their faces pale and twitching with lingering horror.

"What happened?" Hikaru's voice echoed through the dark expanse. His tone was flat, yet laced with a heavy, oppressive authority that immediately served to anchor the panicked minds of his subordinates.

"Mutsu! It's the demons from Mutsu Province, General!" the Tanuki Spirit wailed, its voice cracking into a desperate sob. "They swarmed in from the northeast! A massive horde! They hit the demon shrine in Sagami Province first—ripped the roof right off the Hitotsume-kozo's sanctuary! Then they stampeded straight into Suruga and smashed the Kappa's shrine to rubble!"

"Numbers," Hikaru demanded coldly.

"I don't know exactly! At least forty or fifty! A mix of massive brutes and vicious little runts!"

Hikaru's brow twitched. A horde of forty or fifty wasn't inherently an existential threat if they were mere low-level fodder. Through his systematic distribution of Fear over the past weeks, his Twenty-three Demons had evolved significantly. The Tanuki Spirit had advanced from the first transformation stage to the third, while the others had comfortably reached the second. Bolstered by their collective Fear, they were more than capable of slaughtering small demons with equal or slightly superior Yao Qi. If they grouped up, they could crush most standard threats.

Yet, they had been utterly routed.

"Are there high-level demons leading them?" Hikaru asked, his tactical mind already calculating the variables.

The Tanuki Spirit nodded so vigorously that the jagged claw mark on its face tore open further. It hissed in pain, clutching its bleeding snout. "The vanguard... Master, I felt their auras. There are at least three distinct strands of Yao Qi that are terrifyingly dense. Vastly superior to mine. I didn't even dare look them in the eye..."

Three high-level demons. Based on Hikaru's internal power scaling, entities projecting that level of oppressive aura had to be at the Materialization stage of the Seventh Transformation, if not higher.

"Did they leave a message?"

"They did! They did!" The Tanuki Spirit stammered, scrambling to recall the exact words. "There was this one bastard—looked like a giant weasel, a Kamaitachi. It moved like lightning. It spat on our shrines and declared that this entire land belongs to Tono. It said no outsider scum is permitted to establish shrines in their domain, and ordered us to crawl away or die."

The Tono region of Mutsu Province.

In this chaotic era, amidst the countless demon legends whispered across the islands, Tono stood as an undisputed monolith—one of the largest and most ancient yokai settlements in the entire northeast. Hidden away in deep, mist-shrouded mountains, it was a sanctuary where Kappa, Kamaitachi, Yuki-onna, Zashiki-warashi, and Tengu had thrived and multiplied for centuries. Tono possessed its own rigid order and its own brutal laws.

When Hikaru had aggressively expanded his network throughout the Kanto region, he had deliberately halted his advance before encroaching on the northeast. He knew exactly what Tono was, and pragmatism dictated avoiding a premature war with a legendary yokai syndicate.

But now, Tono had bared its fangs first.

Had they noticed the recent power vacuum in Kanto? It was highly probable. Hikaru and Kikyo had systematically slaughtered or subjugated every independent demon warlord entrenched in the surrounding provinces. Excluding Hikaru's own concealed power, the ambient Yao Qi in Kanto had thinned out drastically, making the region appear weak and ripe for conquest to outside observers.

"What of the human warlords?" Hikaru pressed. "Did the Hojo Clan and the Imagawa Clan offer no assistance?"

While mortal armies were useless in direct yokai warfare, human lords could provide massive tactical support through 'offerings'—funneling concentrated belief and terror into the shrines to boost the demons' power.

"They tried, General," the Tanuki Spirit whimpered. "Several villages in Sagami held emergency sacrifices overnight. The Imagawa clan even doubled the offerings at the Suruga shrine. The influx of Fear was massive, but..." The spirit's voice cracked, trailing off into a miserable whisper. "It wasn't enough."

Far from enough.

Fear was a potent fuel. It could rapidly knit flesh, mend shattered bones, and artificially inflate a lesser demon's combat prowess. But against veteran high-level demons who had achieved true Materialization, all the Fear in the world wouldn't bridge the gap. For a second-transformation grunt, absorbing a mountain of Fear only meant they could survive two strikes from a Tono elite instead of being obliterated in one.

A chasm in sheer quality could not be crossed by mere quantity. Not for ordinary demons, anyway.

Hikaru opened his eyes.

The violent ripples on the water's surface instantly vanished, returning to a glassy stillness. In the depths of his mind, the twenty-three battered faces faded into the dark.

The main hall was silent once more, but the atmosphere had grown heavy, thick with unspoken tension.

Kikyo was already watching him. She didn't ask what he had seen. From the exact second he had closed his eyes, her immense spiritual awareness had picked up on the chaotic, violent fluctuations bleeding from his internal force field. The warm candlelight danced in her pitch-black eyes, reflecting a sharp, clear intelligence as she waited patiently for his report.

Hikaru raised his head, meeting her calm gaze.

"Sagami and Suruga have fallen under attack," he stated, his voice devoid of panic, merely stating cold facts. "A horde of demons from Tono in Mutsu Province has marched south, invading the territory of my Twenty-three Demons."

He paused, his jaw setting into a hard line. "They are led by at least three high-level elites, backed by forty or fifty lesser combatants."

He looked down at his hands, feeling the dormant demonic power thrumming beneath his skin. "I will need to handle this personally."

Kikyo's slender fingers slid gently across her bowstring. A faint, deadly hum vibrated through the quiet room.

She didn't answer immediately. Between them, the candlelight flickered, casting long, swaying shadows against the paper doors as the winds of war began to blow once more.
