Chapter 180: Path of Resurrection
The aftershocks of the Blood-Fire Transformation had yet to dissipate.
Inside the cavern, the ambient temperature continued its relentless climb. Jagged fissures spiderwebbed across the rock walls, bleeding sluggish streams of orange-red magma that hissed as they met the cooler air.
Totosai pressed his back hard against the forging furnace. His large, bulging eyes remained locked onto Kobe Hikaru. Only after several long, agonizing seconds of relative stillness did the old swordsmith finally allow his tense shoulders to drop, exhaling a heavy breath of relief.
He realized a second later that he had relaxed far too soon.
The dense Yao Qi spilling from Hikaru's body did not recede. Instead, it mutated.
The integration of the Blood-Fire Transformation into his veins was akin to dropping a slab of white-hot iron into a stagnant pond. The water boiled, but the pressure did not implode inward. It violently exploded outward.
Crack.
Thick, jagged bone spikes erupted simultaneously from his elbows, shoulder blades, and spine—the precise overflow nodes of his Eighth Transformation. At a speed visible to the naked eye, a massive white skeleton extruded from his flesh, weaving and interlocking into an external ribcage and spinal column.
Purple lightning detonated within the hollow gaps of the bone structure. The crackling electricity rapidly compressed, solidifying into dense, violet muscle fibers that bound the skeleton together. Finally, the thin membrane of Yao Qi expanded from Hikaru's skin, stretching taut over the entire growing construct of bone and thunder.
This was his Ninth Transformation: Asura.
It manifested without a single enemy in sight.
"Retreat, retreat, retreat, retreat, retreat—!"
Having already witnessed the catastrophic devastation of this exact technique, Totosai didn't hesitate. He snatched up his forging hammer and scrambled frantically toward the deepest recesses of the cave. His short, stubby frame ricocheted off the narrow rock walls twice, his sheer panic pushing him to speeds rivaling his earlier escape on the three-eyed fire ox.
As for Myoga, the cowardly flea demon had instantly vanished into the darkest, tightest crevice he could find. Not even the faint glint of his tiny mung-bean eyes remained visible.
A colossal, six-meter-tall giant of bone and thunder rose from the cavern floor.
The ceiling, already dangerously low, simply gave way. Heavy slabs of rock shattered against the Asura Transformation's skull. Boulders rained down, bouncing harmlessly off the hardened skeletal armor and crashing into the surrounding walls, leaving deep, pulverized craters in their wake.
Hikaru paid absolutely no attention to the collapsing environment.
His gaze was turned entirely inward, focused on the core of the Asura Transformation. Specifically, the center of its massive chest.
In every previous iteration of the Asura, that space had been a void. The external skeleton provided the ribs, and the compressed thunder simulated the muscle, but it was purely structural. Form without substance.
It was an empty house. It possessed walls, a roof, and a sturdy door, but nothing lived inside.
Until now.
Within that cavernous chest cavity, a sphere of light ignited.
Interwoven with dark crimson and blazing orange, the fist-sized orb hovered perfectly suspended in the center of the skeletal ribcage.
It pulsed.
The rhythm was heavy, stable, and unyielding.
Thump. Thump.
It was a heart.
The demonic fire that had surged through his veins during the birth of the Blood-Fire Transformation had not entirely remained within his original body. A distinct portion had followed the overflow channels of the Eighth Transformation, flooding into the external Asura structure and condensing into this singular, burning sphere.
The Asura Transformation had grown a heart.
Hikaru stared at the beating firelight. Within his Crimson Demon Eyes, complex purple patterns and orange hues flared in unison.
He felt no shock. Instead, a deep clarity washed over him. The scattered pieces of a long-standing puzzle finally snapped into place. He had just proven the viability of his ultimate path.
For a long time, he had been quietly analyzing a critical bottleneck: with the Ninth Transformation complete, how exactly was he supposed to forge the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth?
Relying on quantitative accumulation to force a qualitative evolution had worked so far, but he could no longer depend on the sheer terror of life-and-death battles to break his limits. Pragmatism dictated that constantly dancing on the edge of a blade would eventually result in his head rolling off his shoulders.
, the Materialization achieved through recasting and overflowing was a one-time phenomenon. Projections could only be cast once.
To advance further, he had to convert the 'shadow'into'substance'.
This realization was the anchor of his current methodology.
Always one to carefully categorize his growth, Hikaru knew the Ninth Transformation—the Asura Transformation—was essentially the construction of a secondary, magnified body outside his own. A projection.
Yet, a projection remained merely an imitation. No matter how indestructible the bone armor, it was just bone. No matter how volatile the thunder-muscles, they were just electricity. The Yao Qi membrane was nothing more than a superficial skin.
It possessed bones, flesh, and skin, but it severely lacked internal organs, flowing blood, and a beating heart.
It mirrored his own physical body—an undead Oni Samurai slowly crawling back toward life, yet still fundamentally an empty shell.
An empty shell required the continuous, exhausting injection of Yao Qi from his main body just to exist.
This was the fatal flaw of the Asura Transformation. It lacked an internal circulation system. Energy flowed strictly one-way; the more he fought, the faster he drained. It was an hourglass that only emptied.
But what if the Asura had a heart?
A heart provided an engine for circulation. With circulation, the construct could actively draw ambient Yao Qi from the environment to replenish its own reserves.
It would evolve from a mere suit of heavy armor into a true, self-sustaining second body.
He needed to forge internal organs for the Asura.
Watching the flickering flame, Hikaru's previously fragmented theories crystallized.
Following the heart, the rest of the viscera had to be cultivated. The five viscera and six bowels corresponded directly to the five elements. The heart aligned with fire—which he now possessed. The liver aligned with wood, the spleen with earth, the lungs with metal, and the kidneys with water.
Currently, he only commanded two elemental forces: thunder and fire. Fire claimed the heart. Thunder could theoretically substitute for wood, as lightning fell from the heavens to strike trees, birthing fire. But it was an incomplete substitute. Factoring in earth, metal, and water, he was still missing four fundamental pillars.
Regardless, the blueprint was set. This was the threshold of the tenth transformation.
He would forge the five viscera one by one within the Asura's chest, anchoring them with the five elements.
With every organ completed, the Asura would gain another layer of autonomous circulation and mastery over a new element—equivalent to an ordinary demon mastering an entirely new transformation.
Once the five viscera were whole and the five elements balanced, the internal circulation would achieve perfection. That would mark the zenith of the tenth transformation.
As for the eleventh transformation, Hikaru deduced it would require the ultimate refinement of this secondary vessel.
Even with a complete set of organs, it would remain a biological machine. True completion required the three bridges of Heaven, Earth, and Man. The three souls.
Not the traditional three souls spoken of by the cultivators across the sea, but a system Hikaru had hypothesized himself, merging his own practical experiences with the spiritual lore Kikyo had shared with him.
The Heavenly Soul governed clarity and pure spirit. The Earthly Soul governed turbidity and the physical vessel—the demon soul. The Human Soul governed the cycle of life and death.
He actually had a firmer grasp on this stage than he did on the tenth transformation. As a demon, his Earthly Soul was already strong, allowing him to naturally absorb the Turbid Qi of the world., the 'Spirit Vision'and'Spiritual Perception' granted by the Shikon Jewel allowed him to peer into the extraordinary mechanics of the soul.
He had a strong premonition. The Heavenly Soul would likely be the ultimate reward the Shikon Jewel would bestow upon him once he maxed out its favorability.
The sequence was logical: perfect the tenth transformation, forge the Asura's viscera, and max out the Shikon Jewel. Then, he could project his complete Earthly Soul into the Asura, overlay it with the Shikon Jewel's Heavenly Soul, and achieve the convergence of Heaven and Earth.
Finally, by comprehending the Human Soul, the Asura projection would achieve absolute spiritual and physical wholeness. The eleventh transformation.
And the final step. The twelfth transformation.
He would fuse this perfected Asura—complete with organs, circulation, and three souls—back into his own body.
It was not about hoarding more power or expanding his outward scale. It was a true, absolute fusion.
He would compress this secondary body, with its beating heart and flowing veins, directly into his undead original form.
His main body would finally cross the boundary of death. It would no longer rely on raw Yao Qi to puppet a corpse, nor would it need the transformations of blood and bone to merely simulate a pulse.
He would cease to be the rotting corpse of an Oni Samurai. He would become a living, breathing entity with a flawless life cycle, entirely reconstructed from the inside out.
His original, stagnant organs would resurrect. From death to life. From a lingering ghost to a true demon.
This was the theoretical pinnacle of qualitative change. Perfect quality. The twelfth transformation. It would forge the absolute foundation required to step into the world of Gaseous Transformation—a phenomenological evolution. Then, he could finally seek out his own 'reason'.
This methodical, step-by-step grind guaranteed an unimaginably high ceiling. Even before reaching the eleventh or twelfth stages, a Hikaru who completed the tenth transformation would rival any entity just shy of a Great Yokai.
Upon achieving the twelfth, he was entirely confident he could arm-wrestle a Great Yokai in its humanoid form and win.
The sheer absurdity of his growth was staggering. After all, his 'transformations' were rooted purely in Physical Transformation, derived from grinding favorability with Demonic Tools. To put it in perspective, his progression method was the equivalent of eating five boiled eggs for breakfast and then casually walking out to beat a Nascent Soul stage cultivator to death. It was terrifyingly efficient.
...As for why he didn't just forge the organs directly inside his own body to save time? The limitation remained the same. His original undead body could only handle a maximum of Six Transformations in terms of Physical Transformation. He had to perform 'addition'on the external projection first, so he could eventually perform'multiplication' on his main body.
Of course, all of this depended on gathering the complete five elements. Right now, he only held fire. Thunder barely counted as half of wood. Once he maxed out the favorability of Yura of the Hair, whose wind attributes also aligned with wood, he might finalize that element. He still needed to hunt down at least three more suitable Demonic Tools to fuse.
It was a long, grueling road ahead. But he had a map. That was all that mattered.
The Asura Transformation slowly began to retract. The outer skeletal plating dissolved, the purple thunder scattered into harmless motes of light, and the towering six-meter exoskeleton vanished completely within a dozen breaths.
At the final moment of disintegration, the Asura's Heart—that blazing orb of flame—flowed backward through the Yao Qi channels. It sank deep into Hikaru's chest, settling exactly where his true heart lay. It dimmed and fell silent, waiting for the next time it would be called upon.
Hikaru slowly opened his eyes.
A massive fissure had split the cavern ceiling wide open. Pale daylight spilled through the jagged gap, casting sharp, alternating patterns of light and shadow across his stoic, pale face.
He lowered his gaze to the Muramasa resting in his grip. The spiderweb cracks still marred the steel. A dark, bloody shimmer pulsed faintly across the edge. The blade's soul was trembling, breathing, waiting.
It was so close. Only the final piece was missing.
That piece was 'will'. The true intent behind his strike. His reason.
Hikaru's fingers tightened around the hilt of the Muramasa.
Then, with a smooth, practiced motion, he sheathed it.
Click.
The crisp sound of steel locking into wood echoed sharply through the ruined, quiet cave.
He knew exactly what his next step was. He needed to gather his will. He had to find the absolute reason for his blade, the core foundation of his existence. Only then could he deliver the final, defining stroke—for the blade, for the Asura, and for himself.
