Chapter 5 - Chapter Five: The Long Shadow to the Cottage

1. From the "Chronicles of Gracious Resilience" (Rarity's Ledger)

Mid-day. En route to the Everfree.

We have left the barn. It felt like leaving a fortress, however drafty it was. Now, we are out in the open, and every rustle of the tall grass feels like a death sentence.

My primary duty—secondary to staying alive—is the "Visual Shield." Applejack and I have positioned ourselves so the children are always in the center. When we passed the edge of the market and saw those... structural changes to the landscape, I made a game of it. "Close your eyes, darlings! It's time for the Blindfold Trot! First one to peek loses a ribbon!"

They giggled, thank Celestia. They didn't see the Stage Two fusion of the flower-sellers, hooting like owls in the shadows of the apothecary.

Rainbow Dash is our vanguard. She's flying low, almost skimming the dirt. She's too quiet. She's looking for Fluttershy, I know she is. We all are. But I fear what we'll find. Fluttershy's kindness was always so... expansive. If she has merged, I worry she will see "Harmony" as something she must force upon us all for our own good.

2. From the "Farm Operations & Emergency Log" (Applejack's Journal)

Traveling. Near the stream.

My legs ache, but I can't stop. We're headin' for the cottage. It's isolated, got its own garden, and plenty of places to hide if things get hairy.

Rainbow is pushin' us hard. She's on high alert, her eyes dartin' everywhere. Every time a bird chirps too loud, she's got her hooves up, ready to strike. I can tell the guilt is fadin' into raw, jagged instinct. She ain't thinkin' about the past anymore; she's terrified of the next five minutes.

She asked me, real quiet, if I thought Fluttershy would still be "there." I told her the truth: I don't know. The Aetheric magic is a tricky thing. If Shai hit Stage Three, she might hate the sound of our hooves. We have to be ready to treat our best friend like a frightened animal. It breaks my heart, but I've got a rope in my pack just in case. I hate myself for packin' it.

3. The Young Scouts' Log (The CMC's Joint Journal)

On the move!

Rarity says we're playing a super long game of "Don't Look Now." It's a bit boring, but the way Applejack is gripping her lasso makes me think there are big wolves out here.

We're going to Fluttershy's! I bet she's got tea ready. Maybe she found a way to fix the "itchy skin" everyone has. Scootaloo says she saw a rainbow cloud near the trees, but Rainbow Dash told her it was just a trick of the light and to keep her eyes on the path.

Dash looks really cool today. Like a Commander. She hasn't made a single joke, though. I miss the jokes.

4. From the "Surviving the Convergence" (Rainbow Dash's Journal)

Objective: The Cottage.

We're out. The open air feels like a trap. Without the barn walls, I feel like a target painted against the grass.

I'm lead scout. My job is to see the Stage Threes before they see us. I've seen three of them so far, hiding in the irrigation ditches. I didn't tell the others. I just signaled for a "Hard Left" and kept us moving. I can't let the kids see what the Threshold looks like. I can't let them see how the faces... shift.

I'm terrified of what's waiting at the cottage. Fluttershy's place is a sanctuary, but if she's gone Stage Three, it'll be a cage. I keep imagining a Stage Four waiting there. Something stable. Something that doesn't hiss or melt, but just... watches. If I see a Stage Four, I don't think I'll be able to run. I'll have to know. I'll have to see if there's anything left of the pony inside.

Applejack keeps looking at me like I'm about to break. I'm not gonna break, AJ. I'm gonna get you there. Even if I have to carry all five of you on my back.

The Scene: The Edge of the Forest

The group stops at the stone bridge leading to Fluttershy's property. The cottage sits in the distance, draped in an eerie, overgrown ivy that wasn't there last week. The birdhouses are silent. No squirrels chatter in the trees.

"Remember the rules, girls," Rarity whispers, her horn glowing a faint, steady blue. "Noses to tails. No wandering."

Rainbow Dash hovers a few inches off the ground, her breath coming in shallow hitches. She looks at the front door. It's slightly ajar.

"I'll go first," Dash says, her voice cracking just a bit. "AJ, if I signal 'Red,' you take them into the trees and don't look back. You hear me?"

Applejack nods, her jaw set tight. She reaches out and squeezes Dash's fetlock. "Just be careful, Dash. Don't go tryin' to be a martyr. Just be a scout."

Dash flies toward the door, the rainbow paint from the earlier encounter still a faint, ghostly smear on her mind. She pushes the door open with a hoof.

"Fluttershy?" she whispers into the darkness of the cottage. "You home?"
