He found it on a Thursday afternoon.
Not the one in the Someday folder — that one had been the starting point, the shape he was looking for. This one was different. Better. The kind of different that made the previous one feel like a draft.
He had been looking quietly for three weeks.
Nobody knew.
He had added filters — eight bedrooms minimum, garden, morning light kitchen, residential neighbourhood, walking distance to a train line. The results had been either too large or too far or too much of the wrong thing.
This one appeared on a Thursday and he read the listing twice and then looked at the address and then looked at the map and then closed his laptop and went to see it.
The house was in a residential neighbourhood forty minutes from campus by train.
Quiet street. Old trees lining the pavement. The kind of neighbourhood that had been the same for thirty years and had settled into itself comfortably.
He stood outside it for a moment.
