Chapter 2 - After midnight

Mira didn't sleep.

She lay on her back, staring at the ceiling, replaying the last few minutes over and over again.

The knocking.

The empty hallway.

The voice.

Her name.

She turned her head slightly and looked at the door.

It was quiet now.

Too quiet.

"…It doesn't make sense," she whispered.

Maybe she imagined it. Stress, exhaustion, new place—her brain was just messing with her.

That had to be it.

People don't just hear their names whispered out of nowhere.

Right?

She let out a slow breath and closed her eyes.

A sharp sound snapped them open again.

Thud.

Mira sat up immediately.

Her heart started racing before she even understood why.

The sound had come from above.

She looked up at the ceiling.

Silence.

Then—

thud… thud… thud

Footsteps.

Running.

Slow at first.

Then faster.

Back and forth.

Right above her.

Her stomach dropped.

"No way…"

Her eyes moved toward the table.

The paper.

The rules.

She didn't want to look at it.

But she already knew.

Rule 2.

If you hear someone running in the hallway at 3:13 AM, stay inside.

Her throat felt dry.

She grabbed her phone with slightly shaky hands.

3:13 AM.

Exactly.

"…Okay," she whispered, more to herself than anything else. "Okay, this is just a coincidence."

The footsteps didn't stop.

They got louder.

More frantic.

Like someone was running without stopping. Without getting tired.

Back.

Forth.

Back.

Forth.

Mira pressed her lips together.

There was no way someone was actually running like that at this hour.

Not normally.

She slowly swung her legs off the bed.

"No," she muttered. "I'm not doing this."

She stood up.

The sound above her didn't pause.

Didn't change.

It just kept going.

Something about that made it worse.

Mira walked toward the door.

Each step felt heavier than it should.

Her hand hovered near the handle.

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—

A voice cut through the air.

"Don't."

She froze.

Her head snapped toward the corner of the room.

The landlord.

He was standing there.

Like he had always been there.

Like he hadn't just appeared out of nowhere.

Mira's heart nearly stopped.

"How did you—"

"I told you not to break the rules."

His voice was quiet, but there was something sharp underneath it now.

Mira frowned, still trying to process how he got inside.

"I didn't break anything. I was just—"

"About to."

The footsteps above suddenly stopped.

Instantly.

The silence that followed was worse.

Mira felt it before she understood it.

Something had changed.

The air felt heavier.

Thicker.

Like the entire building was holding its breath.

"…What was that?" she asked quietly.

He didn't answer right away.

Instead, his eyes moved to the ceiling.

Watching.

Listening.

Then, slowly—

"It's looking."

Mira's chest tightened.

"For what?"

This time, his gaze shifted to her.

"For someone who doesn't follow the rules."

Her fingers curled slightly at her sides.

"That doesn't make any sense."

"It doesn't have to."

There was no emotion in his voice.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Mira glanced at the door again.

Then back at him.

"…You're not going to explain anything, are you?"

"No."

A beat of silence.

"…Great."

She let out a breath and ran a hand through her hair, trying to ground herself.

"Fine. Then at least tell me this."

She met his eyes.

"Was that… a person?"

For the first time, something shifted in his expression.

Just slightly.

"Not anymore."

Silence settled into the room again.

The kind that made every small sound feel too loud.

Mira swallowed.

Her mind was racing, trying to find something logical. Something normal.

But nothing fit.

Nothing made sense.

She looked at the paper again.

The rules didn't feel like a joke anymore.

Not even a little.

"…Why are you still here?" she asked quietly.

"You opened the door."

His answer was immediate.

"I have to make sure nothing followed you."

A chill ran down her spine.

"…And did it?"

He didn't respond.

That was answer enough.

Mira's grip tightened slightly.

"Okay," she said under her breath. "Okay, I'm definitely leaving tomorrow."

"You can try."

Her head snapped up. "What does that mean?"

He didn't explain.

Just walked toward the door.

Mira watched him, unease settling deeper in her chest.

He stopped just before opening it.

"…Lock your door," he said.

Then added, almost as an afterthought

"And don't answer if it calls you again."

After he left, Mira stood there for a long time.

Not moving.

Not thinking.

Just… listening.

The silence felt different now.

Not empty.

Waiting.

She slowly turned toward the door.

Something about it made her uneasy.

Like it wasn't just a door anymore.

Like something was on the other side.

Listening.

Her fingers tightened slightly.

"…This is insane," she whispered.

But she still walked over.

Still checked the lock.

Still stepped back.

Minutes passed.

Or maybe longer.

She couldn't tell anymore.

Her body felt tense, like it was waiting for something to happen again.

And then—

A sound.

Soft.

Faint.

From the door.

Not knocking this time.

Just a whisper.

Barely there.

"…Mira…"

Her breath caught in her throat.

It was back.

Right outside.

Calling her.

Slowly.

Patiently.

Like it knew she was listening.

Mira didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't even breathe properly.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the door.

And the voice—

It didn't stop.
